  • Absolutely incredible
I’ve used so many speakers over the last several years ranging from $25 cheap little speakers on Amazon to $800 Sony speakers and Sonos speakers, and this is one of the most interesting speakers I’ve tried all that time. First off let’s get this out of the way, this speaker sounds absolutely incredible. It seriously sounds just as good as some of the other party box speakers out there by JBL as well as some of the other Sony speakers. This thing sounds absolutely perfect for its size it gets so ridiculously loud while maintaining crystal clear audio quality, the base is incredible, and it just sounds absolutely phenomenal. I’ve used speakers before that can get louder than this or even better than this or more than this, but those speakers are easily three times the size of the speaker and are not nearly as portable, and also don’t have hook ups for a wired wireless mic. As for the microphone quality it’s actually really awesome the wireless mic on this works phenomenally well and never seems to drop out or have any issues, my kids love to sing along to different songs using the microphone. Battery life seems to be exactly as advertised, I used it for about an hour at 50% volume and one of the lights that show battery life turned off, I hadn’t fully charged it before that so I think this will easily last you for 6+ hours. The shoulder strap for this is an absolutely awesome addition and I couldn’t be happier with it. The shoulder strap is very solid as well as the metal clips so it definitely doesn’t feel like it’s gonna break and drop the speaker and it makes it very easy to bring the speaker with you anywhere that you wanna go. I’ve even found myself just wearing the speaker on my hip using the shoulder thing and listening to music as I walk around the house sometimes because it’s just so easy to do and the speaker is relatively lightweight in my opinion (I’m 6’ 4” 270lbs) All in all, this speaker is absolutely incredible and I’m so happy I ordered it. I think it sounds 10x better than my Sonos Move (and costs LESS somehow) and also has 3x the features and functionality of my Sonos Move. (And yes, the Sonos move supports Apple AirPlay and this doesn’t and it has other features this doesn’t have, but sound-wise this is a better speaker for the price). Overall I give this speaker an absolute 10/10, definitely recommend. On sound quality alone this speaker is more than worth the price, but when you add in all the features such as supporting a wireless and wired microphone, guitar hook, up portability with the shoulder strap, using it as a battery bank to charge your phone, and so much more this speaker is just incredible. ... show more

  • Sound quality blew me away
I'm quite picky about sound quality, and was blown away with how good this speaker sounds. EQ: the speaker sounds like it has been tuned to the Harman target curve, which is awesome! This should reproduce sound EQ'd in the same way the master was mixed. I personally like a bit more high end than the harman curve and was able to easily adjust the EQ and did not notice any distortion. The only thing of note here is that there is a bit of a dip around the low mids / high bass region in between the large driver and the lowest tweeter. Luckily this is well below human vocals, so it's not super noticeable, but it's there. Clarity: the thing that surprised me most was how much better this sounded when compared to the JBL charge 4. The charge 4 is very bassy, and does not very accurately reproduce highs like cymbal crashes. This PartyBox has no such issue. It beautifully reproduces sizzling cymbal crashes and just about any sound I could throw at it (more on that later). Loudness: this is a 100 watt speaker and sounds like it. It gets plenty loud for indoors and loud enough for most outdoor needs, aside from a larger setting where music is at the forefront. Separation: the only other weak spot I could find (sound-wise) was separation during very complex songs. For example: during the climax of "All I Need" by Radiohead, the instruments sound a bit muddied since there is a ton going on at once. It was hard to pick out the individual drum hits from all of the other instruments. This is not something you'll notice most of the time, but I can tell the difference in songs that have a wall of sound when compared to my planar IEMs. If you haven't listened to audiophile-grade equipment before, you probably wouldn't notice. Build quality & Accessories: the wireless microphone is perfectly acceptable, although slightly quieter than I would have expected. The strap is good and the speaker is fairly light for the size. The build quality is very high (as is common with JBL products) and seems quite durable. Overall, I was very surprised with just how good the speaker sounds. I was able to listen to a large variety of genres, and they all sounded good! Something that is certainly not true of the charge 4 we own. Read on if you want my thoughts when listening to different genres. --- EDM/IDM/Electronic/Dance/Pop (Daft Punk, Neon Indian, LCD Soundsystem, Tame Impala, Jai Paul, etc) - I expected these genres to sound very good with the speaker and indeed they do. These are the only types genres I would recommend using the "Bass boost" button. Electronic, bass-heavy music sounds very good at loud volumes. Rap (Injury Reserve, Kendrick) - similar to the last group, rap music sounds great. Male vocals sound excellent. Sounds good at loud volumes. Indie/Softer Rock (Radiohead, MGMT, The Shins, Interpol, Eagles, Simon and Garfunkel, etc) - This is where my charge 4 starts to struggle, but I found the PartyBox to perform excellently. Acoustic instruments sound lightyears better than the charge 4 and perform comparably to open-ear headphones. There are some indie bands with some songs that have so much going on across the frequency spectrum that the sound gets a little muddy. However 99.9% of the music in these genres I listened to sound excellent. Midwest Emo/Mathrock (Clever Girl, American Football, Modern Baseball, etc) - similar to the previous category, the instrumentation sounds really good since there usually isn't a lot going on at once. Metalcore/Hard Rock (Beartooth, All that Remains, August Burns Red, etc) - most music in these genres isn't mixed very well, so it's harder for me to judge the speaker. However, from what I can tell it sounds good. I found the most important thing to make these genres sound good is to have the volume plenty loud! I'm shocked! Probably the weakest genre overall due to the challenge this PartyBox has reproducing lower-mids/upper bass -- which is where many harsh vocals can be found. Jazz (Woody Herman, Miles Davis, Benny Golson, Duke Ellington, etc) - I expected the "PartyBox" to sound bad here when reproducing light/acoustic wind instruments, but was quite surprised with how good it sounds. Brass sounds really good and percussion still cuts through. This is the genre I was most surprised sounds as good as it does. It was at this point I was fully convinced that the speaker really is a do-it-all product. Classical (Beethoven, Percy Grainger, Frank Ticheli, etc) - After listening to Jazz, I knew this would sound good too and was not disappointed. Unlike some indie music, I did not notice muddiness when a whole group is playing at once. ... show more
