  • Fabulous, practical guide for making a garden with Japanese elements
I am doing a Japanese inspired fire pit with a pondless waterfall and a stroll garden in my yard. Breaking my wrist in two places in the process gave me down time to order and read this book. It’s comprehensive with a history of Japanese garden styles, of which there are five. The importance of rock placement, the various elements one may incorporate such as lanterns, bamboo, water features, or no water- the use of gravel to mimic water- a Kare-sansui garden, everything is nicely described . In my opinion, Japanese gardens are the most beautiful and meaningful since there is so much history with all of the styles, a reverence for nature, the symbolism of the rocks, incorporation of Shinto, kami, Buddhism, zen in all of the gardens. High marks also go to the beautiful color pictures in this book. There are also complimentary drawings, so should one wish to borrow or copy elements from the pictures they are defined within the drawings. There are also numerous how to explanatory sections on how to make a proper path, bamboo fences, a wood rake for gravel etc. Another delightful aspect of this book is that one may make a small or bigger garden as space allows, and there are endless possibilities. As for me, I’ve incorporated a mix of several styles in my garden. From the fire pit area will be a stroll garden through my woods, and this book is certainly an inspiration to how to do everything and mix elements. It’s also great that not packing too much in is key. ... show more

  • a good mix of content
I am planning the renovation of my garden and want a Japanese influence. This book has a good mix of large and small gardens, Philosophy and practical, Inspirational photos, how to's and plant options. Only a little on modern gardens. The Author is British, this book contains content edited for the US market (eg planting zones) and features gardens in Japan, the US, the UK, Ireland and Europe. It has a list of suppliers in Australia, Canada, the UK and US, also gardens to visit in Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, the UK and US. I haven't finished reading it but so far am impressed. ... show more

  • Good hands-on book on Japanese gardening
Out of three books I bought on Japanese gardens this one is the most practical - just right amount of theory/philosophy and lots of practical advice.

  • 700 photos NOT STEP BY STEP, just around 200
Majority of the photographs are not a step by step. The method describe to prune pines is not really the Japanese technique. This books is good as a reference but is not the REAL Japanese stuff if that is what you're looking for, is more a western adaptation. The good side is that has good photos as reference and lot of description for many of the elements in Japanese gardens ... show more

  • This is EXACTLY the same book as Chesshire's 2009 "A Practical Guide to Japanese Gardening".
This is EXACTLY the same book as Chesshire's 2009 "A Practical Guide to Japanese Gardening" with a different title and cover photo. I'm giving it 4 stars because the content is good and I love the format of the information, but NONE of it has been updated or reformatted since 2009. Given the subject matter that might not be terribly important, although the information about water pumps and other machine tech is likely outdated. I won't go s far as to say this is deceptive, but it would be nice for the publisher to clearly state that this is a reprint, NOT a revision. ... show more
