I have an 8 year old cat who has been having some pretty serious GI issues. We always struggled to keep him under 14 lbs, but during his last episode he registered as 11.5 with no change in appetite/cat feeder changes. This has been very concerning. We’ve had labs and imaging, with no real answers. While we’re still trying to figure out exactly what’s wrong, our vet suggested Instinct rabbit based food in case chicken sensitivity is an issue. We gradually changed/mixed in as directed. And all 3 cats seem to really like the new food. The cat in question has had some more interesting litter box deposits than the other 2, but that’s likely just due to whatever is going on, not just because of the diet change. They’ve been on this for about a month now, and I think we’ll stick with Instinct for the time being. PROS: -limited ingredient list -cats are just as excited about this as their previous food -higher quality -notably softer coats CONS: -Price -Largest size of rabbit protein food is 10lbs and I’d personally like a 22lb bag -stinky food- smells like fish food -foul feces odor (I literally have to take it right out after the sensitive one goes number 2. He’s always had smellier BM’s than the other two. I still don’t notice the smell of theirs even on this food.) I’ll take a happy healthy cat and a stinky litter box over constant vomiting and pain. All the cats have softer shinier coats since switching. And sensitive kitty’s stools are a little firmer with time, but still notably softer than with the other food. The other cats’ BM’s haven’t changed outside of color, but that’s likely because of the color of the food. Other observation: the kibble in the bigger bag is smaller than the kibble in the smaller bag we used as a trial. I prefer the smaller size so I will continue to purchase the larger bag. ... show more

The other reviews are accurate, and I wish I’d read more of them before purchasing. First, I’m pretty happy with the price for a 10 lb bag! I’ve bought other chicken-free food and it nearly breaks the bank. This feels much more reasonable to me as I have 3 cats and this will last me about 3 and a half weeks. Second, I love that their allergen friendly food is ACTUALLY free of all chicken! No by-product or chicken meal! My cat has been soooo much less itchy since using this brand’s non chicken flavors. But this brings me to the con… The smell… dear god the smell. After they poop… well, my bf compares it to mustard gas, but all I know is my eyes burn and it lingers in the room no matter what you do. I did introduce this new food slowly, so unfortunately I think this is just how their bodies react to this flavor. I’ve bought the Salmon flavor before and they LOVE it and their poops are no where near this level of toxic, so I’m thinking I’ll be going back to that one after this bag is finished. ... show more

I got this food for my senior kitty who was also diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. Hence,me getting him this food and am sorry to say but this food did not work for him. He had very bad gas and soft stool for 6+days (I did transition him gently as advised). Instinct staff were great in response to my queries and they said they'd refund 100% if he was having issues. I was told by Amazon CSA that I would see the refund in a few days. My cat is on another food with prebiotics/probiotics and he seems to be adjusting very well...fingers crossed. ... show more

So I really wanted this to work. In short, I have two cats , one with bad food allergies to ALL poultry and both cats sensitive to fish oil. Extremely hard to find a food without all of that!! I have raised both my cats on a honemade diet (supplements and all) and they did great. I thought , let me try a bag food of good quality..for their teeth..and maybe I can save a small amount of money?.i tried about 3 different kinds of great foods I researched really well. this one was the last straw. Unfortunately this one after 3 bags and over a month later, I really think their is some cross contamination issue . i found a few small light color pellets mixed in with the bag of the rabbit food? Turkey? Well..for a cat with severe allergies my cats has been itching up a storm again daily and believe me be he ate nothing but this food. As for the other one, Poor thing. He had to deal with runny poop the whole time with this food but grinned and beared it for his brother. Needless to say we are back on fresh home made venison and pork. The poops and itchiness has been restored. So much for trying to take the "easy" road ! If any company can come up with a solid brand just for cats with allergies I would love to see this!! They will be a niche! I dont think this is a bad food but if your cat has very bad food allergies then trust me I have researched everything!! Homemade is about the only option.. ... show more

....but they scarf it up. Also, I only feed my cats rabbit and duck and they are amazingly healthy. They didn't start out that way though so I do credit diet. The price has gone way up, but what hasn't.

My cat gets a skin allergic reaction to something in most foods except this product. Even the food that was prescribed by the veterinarian did not help my cat get better. I compared ingredients of the vet’s and Instinct, and Instinct had less ingredients, which is what I was looking for. It’s the only food my cat eats. I switch it up between the three flavors.
