  • Title is deceiving!!
I watched Michael's interview about a week ago on YouTube and I liked the stories he shared. I got this book in hope to learn something new in regards to negotiation but there wasn't really much. This is more of a basic business tips book for beginners who got no idea how to deal with business. I thought that I would learn some new strategies in dealing with people when it comes to negotiation but nothing much here. I like the quotes and personal stories Michael shares and I will buy his autobiography but I wouldn't recommend this book if you are looking into negotiation. There many other great books on negotiation and getting people to agree with you. ... show more

  • Dishonest business lessons for honest business
I share another reviewer's concern that writing a negative review of this book will get me whacked, but here nonetheless is my review. The book is a "how to succeed in business" type, formatted such that it presents a business lesson along with a relevant mafia story. But the lesson and the mafia story are often at odds with one another. For example, one lesson of his is that you shouldn't gamble, and that you should be on the lookout for people who do (but he doesn't tell you what to look out for). This is accompanied by a description of the mafia making billions in illegal gambling dens by conning "suckers," the mafia's word for anyone not in the mob. (Flattering, right?) Obviously these ideas contradict one another, but I think this is designed to appeal to narcissistic macho types who cling to the ideal of the alpha male and who almost always go bananas for mobsters; for such types conflate brutality with masculinity, and that does masculinity a huge disservice. You can be unapologetically male and also not defraud "suckers" out of billions via illegal means, or whack people who "disrespect" you. That is why I think there is an undercurrent of glee running throughout the book, glee that he got away with his crimes; for honest business doesn't make huge amounts of money, whereas dishonest business does. He emphasizes that you will always get caught, as he did, but I don't believe he got caught in the way we think he did. For instance, he's especially proud of defrauding the government of billions in gas taxes. A conservative estimate is that he was making $180 million PER WEEK from his gas racketeering alone. He described his construction union business as "almost as lucrative" as his gas scam; so we're talking almost $400 million PER WEEK that he's pulling in, without accounting for the 100+ other scams he admits to having been involved in. Even saying for argument's sake that he only got to keep 25% of it due to mafia distribution rules, we can be certain that the "author" (I say this loosely, for the book screams "ghostwritten) was a billionaire at some point. So where did all the money go? His past business associates say that they accompanied him on innumerable trips to Caribbean and European banks to deposit money. Others say he buried the cash with talcum powder. I believe both scenarios, funnily enough; they do not negate one another. I've no doubt that his "struggles with money" are entirely fictitious and that he's laughing about having yet to pay $14 million in back taxes and fines. So do I buy the born-again Christian schtick? Nope. Not for a New York minute. ... show more

  • Look to the mob for business advice? Not hardly!
I expected this to be an expose of his dealings in the mob and what it is deals more with his lessons learned in life by taking a rough road then finding God. I appreciated his turning his life around but find it hard to take management advice on how not to manage. He compares Machiavellian philosophy to Solomon’s wisdom and tries to steer a path to Solomon which is wise, after all, wasn’t Solomon one of the wisest to live on the Earth? Nevertheless, there are much better books on management styles and business. I wouldn’t recommend this book. ... show more

  • I Dont Like the offer
Just an old guy that feels bad about or (not) about his past trying to guide youth to do better in this book, as is mostly ambitious young men and women with Machiavellian as the giant they stand on that are going to read/be attracted to a mobsters book . I do think he brings a good point of creating a business on good principles, but unfortunately the reality is competitors in this world are not going to play nice. For that reason i am out [Insert Shark Tank voice lol]. I think it is easy to say all this fluff when you are rich, but when your a poor, minority that is by all measures a nobody in life, with the deck against you his offer is useless. I still give it 5 stars, as there is a multitude of nuggets in this book about business and life. ... show more
