  • A Powerful Tale of Resilience and Courage
I Survived the Attacks of September 11th, 2001 is an emotionally gripping and thought-provoking book from the "I Survived" series by Lauren Tarshis. As an avid reader, I was deeply moved by the author's ability to capture the essence of the tragic events that shook the world on that fateful day. Tarshis skillfully weaves a captivating story that follows the journey of eleven-year-old Lucas, a young boy who finds himself in the heart of the chaos and devastation that unfolded in New York City on September 11th. The author's attention to detail is remarkable, allowing readers to vividly experience the sights, sounds, and emotions associated with this unforgettable day. What sets this book apart from others about 9/11 is its focus on the resilience and courage of ordinary people. Through Lucas's eyes, we witness the bravery of the first responders, the selflessness of those who helped strangers, and the strength of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable adversity. Tarshis effortlessly conveys the importance of unity and compassion, reminding us that even in the darkest of times, hope can prevail. Although this book is primarily geared towards young readers, its impact extends far beyond its intended audience. The simple yet powerful language makes it accessible and engaging for readers of all ages. It serves as an excellent tool to educate and initiate discussions about the events of September 11th, allowing younger generations to gain a better understanding of this significant moment in history. I especially appreciate how Tarshis handles the sensitive subject matter with grace and respect. She successfully navigates the balance between conveying the horrors of the attacks while maintaining an age-appropriate tone. While the book does address the tragedy, it does so in a way that is informative without being overly graphic or overwhelming. "I Survived the Attacks of September 11th, 2001" is a poignant and important addition to the "I Survived" series. It not only sheds light on a crucial historical event but also imparts valuable lessons of empathy, courage, and resilience. I highly recommend this book to readers of all ages who are looking for an impactful and educational reading experience. ... show more

  • An accurate presentation of 9/11 for those who were not even born then...
It arrived even sooner than promised. It was for my 7 year old grand-nephew, a very bright kid who is a good reader. He enjoyed it very much. I also wrote to him describing my memories of 9/11, and my various connections to some of the people who died at Ground Zero (peripheral connections, to be sure, no close relatives or friends, but acquaintances). It's important for children to know about what happened on that day, and our emotional attachments to 9/11. The graphic novel format is helpful in this regard. ... show more

  • Good timeline of September 11th events.
The attacks of September 11, 2001 happened before I was born. I have heard many stories from the adults in my life about that day. Ms. Tarshis does a great job of creating the character, Lucas. The reader lives that horrific day through his eyes. The author does a good job of letting us know how Lucas feels about the things that are happening. I felt that the strongest point in the book was the desperation of Lucas to find his dad and Uncle Benny (both of which were firemen). One of the things I felt was less than realistic was an 11 year old running around New York City by himself. I guess it could happen but I would think that trying to get into a city that large and by yourself you would be asking for trouble. I thought it would have been more believable if Lucas had been with an adult. I also felt it was unrealistic that Uncle Benny made it out of the building alive. One fire fighter carrying one injured person on their back and leaving their fellow firefighters didn't seem very likely. If Uncle Benny had responded with his company immediately, the likelihood that he would have started down the stairs in time to flee the building before it collapsed is not very believable. Most of the firefighters who perished were some of the first ladder companies to respond. Ladder Company #4 lost an entire shift of firefighters. Their loss was the most among one Ladder company in New York City with 15 firefighters dead. I think this book is great for kids who want to learn about the attacks of September 11th. This date caused a huge change in our country's national security and affected the personal privacy of every citizen of the United States. The Patriot Act came directly from this attack on our country's soil and was implemented to allow all security agencies in the United States to communicate with one another to stop future potential terrorist attacks. The way the author leads us through the time line of the events that day helps give a person the chance to see just how quickly things happened. This day was a tragedy and made the United States realize that things like this could happen in our country. We now have the alert system and it seems that every single day we are in an elevated alert status. As more terrorist attacks happen across the world we must continue our efforts to combat these forces of evil that take innocent lives in the name of religion. ... show more
