Description

Author Boni Ashburn and illustrator Julia Denos’s I Had a Favorite Dress is a fresh, stylish, and “endearing” (Wall Street Journal) picture book about growing up and keeping hold of your favorite memories. “Will speak to young fashionistas.” —Kirkus Reviews This is a lively, energetic story about adjusting when you need to and being creative when you have to. As the year passes, the narrator’s favorite dress goes through a series of creative changes, from dress to shirt to tank top to scarf and so on, until all that’s left of it is a good memory. Assisted by her patient and crafty mama, the narrator finds that when disaster strikes her favorite things, she doesn’t need to make mountains out of molehills—she “makes molehills out of mountains” instead! Structured around the days of the week, the story is also illustrated to show the passing of the seasons, a perfect complement to the themes of growing older and keeping hold (and letting go) of special mementos. The collaged mixed-media full-color illustrations of watercolors, graphite, colored pencil, and needle and thread give this unique and charming story its bounce and flounce. Breezy in style, the artwork smartly stitches each scene of alteration as the not-so-little girl sashays through the days of the week and the seasons. This modernized version of a traditional folk tale will delight new audiences of parents and children who will learn that everything old can really become new again. “What could have been yet another example of kindergarten consumerism instead becomes one of resourcefulness and resilience.” —New York Times Also available: I Had a Favorite Hat Read more

  • Darling Story
We have been reading this over and over again because the story is just so cute. The illustrations are nice. The tempo is very upbeat and catchy, and sounds very good when read aloud. The story itself is nice because not only does it talk about fashion, it addresses the idea of repurposing things. I also appreciate that although the main character is POC, the story isn’t about her race or racial struggle. The story also has repeated lines that are perfect for kids who like to read along with parents. This book makes for a great gift for children 3-6. If they like Fancy Nancy or anything fahshion or craft related, they will love this. ... show more

  • super cute
Adorable. This book is like a combination of Grandma wisdom of "use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without," and Project Runway (which is a combination that works better than it sounds). Who remembers The Elephant Show with Sharon, Lois and Bram? They performed a song this book reminded me of, where a coat became a jacket became a vest became a hat became a tie became a pocket became a button...you get the drift. Anyway, the sweet story and impossibly cute illustrations combine to make this something I hope my granddaughter will love, and a message I hope she'll embrace. ... show more

  • My favorite book for my daughter!
This was one of the first books I bought for my daughter when she was born. She’s now 4 and loves this book. It is such a cute story and the pictures are amazing. It’s one of my favorite books that I have gotten for her. If you have a little girl, this book is a must!

  • Wonderful story, beautiful illustrations
This has become my five year old daughter's favorite book. She quotes from it often ("making molehills out of mountains", etc.) and it's honestly become a source of inspiration to her in terms of creativity and problem solving. I really can't recommend it enough. I even find myself tearing up at the end when I read it aloud because the underlying theme is about a child growing up and ever-changing. ... show more

  • Adorable book for little girls
This is such a cute book that incorporates humor and a believable story line. I can relate to the book because as a child I also had a favorite dress that I was sad to outgrow so my mom made doll clothes out of it! I love the book's encouragement of "up-cycling" items to be used again and again. Makes me want to browse my own closet for things to revive :) ... show more

  • Super cute story for all mini fashionistas!
This is the cutest story. I got this for my 4-year old niece and she can’t get enough. She has read it with her mom several times since receiving it. She’s a little fashionista of color, and she loved seeing a brown girl like her on every page. Her mom told me she excitedly said, “mommy, she looks just like me!” That said, this is a universal story that will appeal to a range of ages. ... show more

  • My daughter's favorite book! This is on repeat every night
My daughter's favorite book! This is on repeat every night. When I first read it to her she had a puzzled look. She couldn't quite understand if the "uh-oh's" in the book were a bad or good thing. A little girl is learning to part ways with her favorite dress that she's outgrown and each phase is followed by an uh-oh, snip-snip, sew-sew, the dress become another article of clothing. My 2 yr old really enjoys the "snip-snip" and "sew-sew" part. She would listen attentively waiting for the moment to chime in "snip-snip." ... show more
