  • Works.
Now that I have this, I’ve been trying (& getting) to get games that I owned or rented & wanted to own. So far, Every game I have works on it. The only problem I can see with it is that the cartridge slots seem tighter & you have to really push the cart in to get it locked in right. But you’re worried somewhat that you might break the system or cartridge trying to insert it. Even with that issue, I would recommend for anyone who wants all three of the systems original Nintendo, super Nintendo and Sega genesis all in one unit. I wished I’d of had these back in the early 90s. This unit really is a lot of bang for your buck. Update: Another reviewer said that it wouldn’t play their original cart of Super Mario All Stars. There may be something wrong with their cart or they just need to blow dust out of it like we did back in the day as mine works fine. ... show more

  • Nice retro gaming system!
So far, so good. It's had no problem playing original console cartridges or the "900 in 1" cartridges. I would highly recommend pairing this with some 8Bitdo wireless controllers for the best gaming experience!

  • Works perfectly with Everdrive clones
I bought the Retron 3 HD because unlike the Retron 5 it does not emulate the games. I bought Everdrive clones for the NES, SNES, and Genesis (Mega Drive), and one for the Master System with an 8-Bit adaptor for the Genesis slot. All of them work perfectly. The Retron 3 has switches for every region on every console and I have yet to find a game that doesn't play like it would on release directly from the Everdrive. I got the Everdrive clones from AliExpress, all four of them together is around $120, and you'll have the full libraries of four great consoles with the old school simplicity of real hardware. ... show more

  • Great console
My only problem is I wish I had more games to play on it. Console does exactly what it needs to.

  • Disappointed with what could have been an amazing retro console!
TL;DR : Hyperkin products are an apparent crapshoot based on other people's negative reviews and my own experience. Might work, might not. Bad customer service also. Look at people's negative reviews of other Hyperkin Retron systems and you will find similar issues to the ones below!! This is a long one. Buckle up. I REALLY wanted to like this console. It has everything I was looking for in a retro clone console, except the price (it is a little bit steep at 84.99, imo). There are some very good Pros to this console, also some very prominent (possibly deal-breaking) Cons. However, none of that matters because it stopped working in 10 days. As you will see below, my potential review has changed. I was so stoked when I got the Retron 3 HD. I had just introduced my young son to Super Mario Bros and we spent about a week playing the console and it was (temporarily) flawless! 10 days after I bought it, the sound went out on the console. It still had normal video function. Strange, because it is HDMI out and both audio and video are through that port. I changed hdmi ports on my Samsung tv, I changed cables, and I even changed TVs, but to no avail. No sound still. Broken and defeated, I resigned to having to contact Hyperkin for a warranty replacement. My son was equally crushed, if not more so. I contacted Hyperkin via phone on the morning of 4/20/20, knowing that they were only open MWF due to the pandemic. They said to send proof of purchase and to send an email to [email protected]. I figured that getting a Return Authorization via email would be a simple and quick task so that I could get a replacement. I thought that they would respond quickly to my email, as I sent them everything they needed quickly. I also assumed that they would want their customers to have functioning consoles in this time of quarantine. They did not respond that day, despite having the whole business day to do so. Okay, no problem. Maybe they are busy, I thought. They will get to me the next business day, right? On that Wednesday, I sent a followup email. No response. Ok, still not upset. I was giving them the benefit of the doubt. I waited until the weekend to make a decision on what to do. Come Monday of the next week, no response still. Ok, time to take matters into my own hands. I decided to send the item back to Amazon and letting that be the end of my relationship with Hyperkin. Which is where we are now. I also found out that even if Hyperkin would have responded to me, I would have had to ship the console back to them at my expense. For a manufacturing defect. Doesn't make much sense. I didn't even get so much as an automated email saying they were busy, backed up, or anything at all.. Very disappointing, considering I paid $85 plus tax. Before the sound failure after 10 days, the console seemed good. In the interest of fairness, not including the sound failure, here are some Pros and Cons are listed below: PROS: The look of the console itself is very "Retro-Future", if you will. A matter of taste, but I liked it. This is a Pro and Con: They provide 1 SNES and 1 Genesis controller . The Pro of this is that the controllers are of high quality and have long 10' cables. The HDMI visual quality is pretty good! The internal upscaler is nice. It ran my SNES and Genesis games well with no compatibility issues. I did not test NES. Also, the SNES pin slot does not have the death grip. It is pretty close to a real SNES. CONS: The price. $84.99 + tax is steep, but obviously not steep enough for me, as I actually bought the thing (so can this actually be considered a con?) . The controller situation. They provide one SNES and one Genesis controller. It sucks that you cannot do local multiplayer unless you buy more controllers, as you can only use SNES on SNES, etc.. Also, they don't provide a NES controller, which means you can't even play NES out of the box. The Genesis slot HAS A DEATH GRIP on the carts! Also, you have to put it in at a strange angle. The Customer Service is not good. As you can read above, I am sad that they never even responded to me. As of 4/29/20, no response. Another thing, they told me they had never heard of this problem before, which simply is not true. Other customers' negative reviews have the same no sound issues on other Retron consoles. The bottom line is that I am a believer in the legends: Hyperkin products are of low quality that may work (for a while) or will not work at all out of the box. It's the luck of the draw, . A 1 year warranty doesn't mean anything if they don't respond to you. Hyperkin has permanently lost me as a customer. My money has now gone to Gamerz Tek with their 16bit HD and Minigen HD units. Hopefully I will have better luck with them. ... show more

  • Great system with just a few caveats
I had recently purchased and reviewed 2 units by Gamerz Tek, one SNES unit, the other a Genesis system. Both were decent units, but felt a little cheap and ultimately, they both suffered from some not so great audio output, exacerbated by a home theater setup. The SNES unit also had a good amount of visual noise. Ultimately, I decided to give the Hyperkin unit a shot. It seemed convenient, covering 3 systems I still had a collection of games for and took up less space. I also appreciated that this was indeed a “clone” system and not running an emulation setup such as their Retron 5. This unit has been excellent so far. It feels well built for what it is. Compared to the other clone and emulation options, this unit certainly feels above average in build quality, though do understand that it is still not on par with the premium feel of the actual consoles it mimics. My SNES is an original release unit and it works like a champ, I can’t see the Hyperkin surviving 30 years. The hardware does take a hit in a few areas. The controller inputs are at an odd placement. The SNES are front facing, but the remaining console inputs are on the sides. The Genesis inputs also appear to be in reverse with the player one port on the right. Not a tremendous problem, but confusing if you are attaching a controller while the unit is in a TV stand or you don’t have a clear view. The Genesis cartridge slot is also ridiculously tight. So much so, that I at first thought it was faulty. I used a game I was less concerned with breaking to test the slot only to find out that pushing the game into the unit requires enough pressure that snapping off the system’s pins or the game cartridge board is a real concern. This is even more true when using a smaller cartridge, such as the yellow tab EA releases that have a smaller footprint. Removing the cartridge is just as difficult and I am concerned that the pins will pull away from the board after repeated use. The NES and SNES seem to be less of an issue. Compatibility seems good so far. In my fairly limited playtime, I haven’t found any broken games or experiences yet. The video quality is good if not a bit muted. I did add a Scan-line Generator into the mix for a more authentic look. It has independent RGB controls and I’ve been able to tune the image a little better, but this is another $30 add on you would have to be prepared for. I do wish one of these companies would simply incorporate this feature into their units with an optional on/off switch. The 4:3 switch is much appreciated. I prefer playing these games in their original aspect ratio. It is a personal preference, but I’m glad the option is present. My existing first party accessories have all worked without a problem. I have not been able to test the NES Zapper as I am currently without a CRT television. The controllers that ship with the device are decent. They feel better than the usual Ali Express bargain basement units, but are nothing too special. The addition of an NES adapter to use with the SNES controller is a nice addition and cuts back on additional controllers, though ultimately, I have been using 3 wireless controllers by 8bitDo, each for their respective consoles and they have all worked as expected. My last hardware gripe is the cartridge layout. Had they flip flopped the SNES and Genesis slots, there would have been more room for inserting the Genesis carts with the needed pressure and the cartridges would have gone from shortest to tallest with the 2 Nintendo consoles next to each other which would have been more visually appealing. Perhaps the goal was to make the unit SNES-centric as those are also the ports on the front, but the unit does not look like an SNES, so that goal is lost in translation. Overall, this unit has offered a great gameplay experience, great compatibility, excellent sound (true stereo) and video, and convenience of a single unit. It only suffers from a few hardware shortcomings and design flaws that may be more subjective than objective. The unit I have received appears to have passed quality control fairly well, with none of the reported hardware issues as in other reviews. So, in the end, my kids are getting the Gamerz Tek units in another room of the house on a smaller TV and the Hyperkin Retron 3 HD will sit proudly next to my current gen consoles in our main entertainment area for the friends and family to enjoy. ... show more
