  • Good handheld telescope for bird-watching, etc., comes with useful accessories
The most important feature of any optical device is image quaiity, and I would rate the quality of this handheld telescope as good. It might even be very good, because even though it isn't as good as my best binoculars, it isn't fair to compare vision through one eye with that through two. But I can see well enough through this device to identify different kinds of birds at 100 feet or so. The field of view is reasonably wide and the focus adjustment was responsive and easy to use. This telescope comes with several accessories, most of which I found to be useful. It comes with a small (tabletop-type) tripod with legs that spread enough to balance the length and weight of the telescope. It also comes in a nice carrying case, with shoulder strap, that also holds both the telescope and the tripod. (The telescope also has a separate felt bag to protect it in inside the case). There are lens caps, fore and aft, with the front one tethered to the telescope to ensure that it doesn't get lost. And I especially appreciated the hand strap that attaches to the telescope and makes it very easy to hold the scope. (Try to tighten it as close to the scope as possible so that your hand fits snugly, and you can "wear" the scope almost as you would a glove.) There is also an accessory that permits a cellular phone to be mounted to the telescope for taking long range pictures. I will confess that I had some difficulty getting this to work, perhaps less because of its design than because of the design of my iPhone Pro Max. The telescope comes with very basic directions and it wasn't clear to me which of the iPhone's three lenses was to be lined up with the telescope. After reading some things on-line, I concluded that one needs to use the regular lens of the iPhone rather than the telephoto lens, meaning that the two can't be used to obtain extra high magnification. As a consequence, given the difficulty I had mounting the phone on the telescope, with the correct lens looking through it, I realized that I actually can get better magnification through the phone's telescopic lens than I can through the telescope. So I gave up. However, those with other kinds of phones, and especially those without optical zoom lenses, may find this accessory useful. It would have been nice if the instructions gave some guidance for using different kinds of cellular phones with the telescope. There were also no instructions on how best to mount the hand strap. The instructions were useful, however, in explaining how to use the focusing knob and also the adjustable eyecup, which allows one to use the telescope both with and without eyeglasses. Overall, I am very pleased with this telescope. I've only used it to observe things on land (It gets pretty cold here at this time of year to go outside for viewing the night sky). But it is easy to use and provides a reasonably good image. I'm happy to have it. ... show more

  • Wow!! This works, really well!
What a great monocular! I have another one of these that is from a far more recognized brand that I paid more than double the price of this one for. It was only the monocular and the tripod, no phone attachment, or anything else came with my other one. Comparing the two, this one is so much better value than my one that cost more than double this price. The pros: Great carrying case that protects it from damage Very easy to use and a crystal clear view The dials to adjust it are conveniently located and easy to use There’s a nice hand strap included The phone attachment is a little small and therefore difficult to adjust, but as you can see from my photos, it works well. The cons: The tripod is very cheap and plastic. I see this breaking very easily. Also, when the monoculars is attached to the tripod, the base it sits on has a little bit of play in it, so it is very difficult to center your image in the lens. As you can see the pros far outweigh the cons, and it is a great device for photographing wildlife. I feel it’s a good value for the price and the small, compact carry case makes it easy and convenient to transport it out into the woods. I will give the monocular itself five stars, I marked it down to a four star overall because the tripod is not very sturdy, and if you have big hands like me, it’s very difficult to adjust and lineup your phone in the included phone holder for taking photos. Otherwise, this is a great product! ... show more

  • An excellent, complete telephoto kit for you cell phone.
This is a complete, well thought-out, designed and engineered kit for telescopic use of your cell phone. The kit consists of very nice "hard" carrying case (with shoulder strap) for the telescope, a desktop very interesting plastic tripod, a well-designed adapter that will fit most cell phones to the telephoto lens, and a "manual" consisting of just four 3 by 5-inch pages, English on one side, and my guess it's German on the other. The first page is just a title page with a drawing of the telescope. The next page shows how to adjust the eyecup which makes it easy for both those with normal vision or who wear glasses to use the 'scope. Page 3 shows how to adjust focus and how to remove the lens cap. The last page is a drawing of the 'scope with identification arrows showing points of interest. There is no manual for either the tripod which has a number of features that will have to learned by fiddling with it (actually, fun!) or the cell phone adapter, which is rather tricky the first time you attempt to use it. It is simply a matter of figuring out which lens your cell phone uses for normal photography and lining it up with the telescope's eye piece. It took me a while to get it down. There are no instructions or tips on getting the alignment set. After you've got it set, you'll understand how difficult it would be to write up a instructions for this process. I wouldn't want to do, and I've been writing for years. (I'd charge triple my normal rate!) Once you have configured your 'phone-telescope a few times, you'll immediately realize that the included tripod really has but one purpose, and that is to let you practice setting the system up. It is too flexible to be of practical use anywhere but on a desk. But it is fun to be able to focus across the room and be able to count the dead insects on window sills. But fiddling with how best to set up and use the phone-telescope as a system is what it is all about, on the desk. Once outside and mounted on a STURDY tripod, your cell phone becomes an incredible photographic system. The auto focus and zoom adjustment make it easy to first locate an object of interest, then zoom in on it. The system works so well that you can forget the tools you are using and completely devote your time to the purpose it is being applied to. The images that you can capture are, when carefully focused, stunningly clear, sharply defined with marvelous contrast. This is all due to the optics in the telescope. Nothing more needs to be said about the telescope except that mechanically it is extremely robust...and has excellent lens covers - they fit quite snugly and will not accidentally fall off. If truth be told, this 'scope deserves more than the average cell phone camera if it is to reach its full potential. It is a good excuse to upgrade your phone to one with a "great" camera in it. My only "complaint" if there is one, is centered around the eyepiece, but only when using it as a "real" telescope, that is, when you are actually looking through it rather than using it with a cell phone. Because the image must be formed for cell phone use, "eyeball" use suffers in that the eyepiece lens is more greatly exposed, and thus subject to greater chances of dirt, grease and scratches. So the user must take greater than average care of this lens. Too bad! This telescope kit is one of the best I've found in the "non-scientific" market place. Science types typically have higher resolution, more sensitive sensors that a cell phone can never match at a reasonable, affordable price. But this little telescope has as much power (12X) as can be managed by most people using normal lightweight tripods and a 56mm lens which allows it to be used (successfully) in low light situations. If you get the idea that I like this product, you have it right. If you have use for such an instrument, such as birding, or anything out of doors and distant (or maybe even chasing down a ufo) this telescope will probably suit you better than most. I give it five stars. This is a powerful ... show more
