  • Black Ink Streaking/Update
Style: New Version
I have two other HP printers and have not had this problem. I just received this printer today so it was brand new out of the box and I am experiencing issues with it. As you can see by the pictures, there is a lot of streaking and smearing of the black ink. I have printed the same document on my other printers and have not had this problem at all, so I am thinking there is some type of defect on this printer. Update 5/12/24- I am now rating this printer 5 stars. I ended up ordering a new printer because I had a feeling the first one I had was defective. I am experiencing zero issues with smearing and it is printing perfectly fine now! I am currently waiting for Amazon to pick up the first printer I ordered to receive a refund. The printer is rather large, but it looks very nice on my desk and I love that it has two trays and can print larger sizes to create my classroom posters and mini anchor charts. ... show more

  • A Decent Printer for the Money
Style: Printer
This HP 7740 replaced a several year-old HP 8710 (which is still running fine), but I needed to be able to print on larger paper - 11x17 (for technical drawings), and the 7740 does that. It also takes the same 952XL ink cartridges as the old 8710, so that's another big plus for me. NOTE: This printer (right out of the box) will accept and run "aftermarket" (non-genuine) HP ink cartridges (that's what I'm using), as does my 8710. HOWEVER, do NOT do the firmware updates if the printer prompts you to. That way, you can continue to use the aftermarket cartridges. DO NOT opt for "automatic updates" during the printer setup. Once the printer was unboxed, the set-up was very easy. Ran the power cable (to my UPS), and an Ethernet cable, for local network printing. Powered it up, installed the ink cartridges, and the unit went through its "maintenance" routine (first run), and then was ready to go. I initially had to install the genuine HP cartridges, but after its initial "maintenance routine", I installed the larger generic XL ink cartridges, which work fine. I had a bit of trouble getting my office PC to load/install the Windows HP print driver (from the HP download site), but once that was done, the printer is working perfectly. Overall, it's a very nice printer. Not sure why there are several negative reviews... It is a bit big (physical size)... However, it does print quite well - AND - it will accept & print 11x17 tabloid size paper, so I can deal with the size. ... show more

  • Good so far but read on
Style: Printer
I needed a printer that would handle 11X17 paper. My old HP wide-paper printer was starting to squeak and it was a pain to get to print every time I needed it. So I bought this one. It is very large but I managed to get it to fit in the space of the old printer. I didn't need the fax function nor probably the scan function. The set up of this printer went very smoothly, right up to the point where I told it to print something, then nothing. I had set it up to print via my wifi and it connected right away to the network, it just didn't print. As soon as I hit the print button the printer immediately sounded as if it were going to print but did not. I checked the "what printing" window via the control panel of Windows 10 and nothing was there. After trouble shooting for about an hour I gave up and plugged in the USB cable. I have another old HP printer that was supposed to work wirelessly but I never got it to work and I thought this printer might be the same. Shortly after connecting the USB cable I was printing no problem. After testing the 11X17 paper printing I decided to unplug the USB cable and the printer continued to printer wirelessly. Why's that? I have no idea. But the printer has continued to work properly via wifi since then. This printer has it's own email address and you can change the email address as you please. You take whatever document you want to print and email it to the printer's email address and it prints out. I tested that function and it was no problem. I noticed on some of the documents I printed to 8 1/2X11 paper that there was a black line down one side of the page. I have no idea what that's about. I'll try to fix that when I have time to waste. I found no printing funnies when printing 11X17 paper. So far, except for the setup hiccup I described above, I'd give the printer a A-. I had to take off some for the setup hiccup. The printing is fast and clear, much faster than my old HP wide-paper printer and a clearer print I think too. I haven't tried photo printing on high quality paper as I have no interest in that at this time. ... show more
