Description

Color and contrast enhancement. Light rays which are reflected by any surface can become polarised so polarising filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. CIR-PL filters allow you to remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water, glass etc. They also enable colors to become more saturated and appear clearer with better contrast. This effect is often used to increase the contrast and saturation in blue skies and white clouds. HOYA's polarising filters do not affect the overall color balance of a shot. HD POLARIZING FILM: High Transparency & High Durability UV Absorbing Film. 25% Greater Light Transmission than Standard Polarizing Film. HD COATING: 8-layer Anti-Reflective Multi-Coating. Water & Oil Repellent, Scratch & Stain Resistant. HD FRAME: Wide-Angle Lens Compatible Ultra Thin Frame. Glass Mounted with High Pressure Press Technology

  • Use the reflections or remove them!
Size: 52mm
I have been very impressed with the Hoya CIR-PL. I have been wearing Oakley Polarized sunglasses for a while and when I bought a camera I wondered if the same effect was possible. Not only was it possible with the Hoya filter, it was modifiable. Something I always have shown to friends about my sunglasses is the weird, but cool effect of turning your head with the sunglasses on. It changes the color of the sky, removes reflections, allows you to see through some tinted glasses (via removal of said reflections) and greatly enhances contrast. The filter does the same thing! But I don't have to tilt the camera to do so. With the Hoya HD CIR-PL you are able to simply mount the filter to your camera and turn the rotatable mount to add, remove, or modify the effect of the filter. You can leave the reflections if you want them, leave a little bit to add some customization or remove them from the picture almost all together. One of the awesome things I loved most is the ability to remove reflections from water and glass. We have horses here at the house and the water troughs can get pretty dirty. But with reflections you wouldn't be completely able to see though the water to see the floaties or the grime that is being left behind. With this filter it did an awesome job of being able to see through the reflections of the water and see into the water. This effect could be used to photograph fish, underwater plants and swimmers! So in in short. If you are looking for an artistic way to change a few colors in your photos, this filter is for you. If you are looking to look through some of the glare and reflection created by light sources, this filter is for you. If you wear polarized glasses and want to add that sweet effect of tilting your head to your photos, this filter is for you. ... show more

  • Good polarizer, but not great
Size: 62mm
I bought a used lens from Japan and didn't realize it until the lens arrived--my 55mm polarizer would not fit the lens. So, I had to order one of these in for a few upcoming travel dates. I was able to put it through its paces this past weekend and it works about the same as the smaller polarizer. What I am not used to is that this polarizer actually has a threaded front to it (so, it is nice to be able to put the lens cap on it for a change), and the ring to turn the polarizer is smaller than I am used to. Having used it extensively for three weeks, I have found a few flaws. First, when you have a lens hood on the lens, it is very difficult to turn the polarizer. My older polarizer was larger and protruded more from the front of the lens, so it was much easier to turn. Second, it is rather tricky to get this polarizer tight on the lens. It had a nearly fatal flaw, onto hard rock, when it spun off the front of the lens once while using it. Thankfully it didn't break, but at a different angle it could have. Finally, I found that compared to my older polarizer, the images through this one are not as good. The images are slightly dulled and washed out, where my old circular polarizer actually made the images "pop" more. There were many times when I would rotate the polarizer and it made little to no effect, whereas my old polarizer had a clearly visible effect in the same shooting location (using a different lens, since the old polarizer does not fit the new lens). Sadly my original polarizer is no longer made. And there is no issue with the new(er) lens--side by side, it takes images without the polarizer at the same quality level as my older lenses. In short, this somewhat fulfilled my needs, but I would not recommend it. Given the cost, the overall image quality is not that good. ... show more

  • Construction does not meet the high quality of the glass
Size: 72mm
The glass in this filter lives up to Hoya's claims. It is wonderful for eliminating reflections in water and making clouds pop from a blue sky. It does not block as much light as other polarizers I have owned. But it has two problems with its construction. 1. It can get stuck on the lens. Be careful not to screw it on too tight as it tends to stick to the lens. A filter wrench or rubber band may be used to remove it should you tighten it too much. I try not to tighten it when I attach it to my lens. An Internet search will confirm that people other than I have had this problem. 2. It can fall apart. The two metal rings split apart and the brass colored spring wire that holds them together falls on the ground. This happened to me when I was trying to remove it with a rubber band "wrench" when the filter became stuck to the lens. The glass hit the ground and I now have a very tiny nick in it. As others reported here on this problem you can search the Internet to find instructions for putting it back together. It will require cleaning as filter rotating lubricant gets all over the glass. It took nearly half an hour of trial and error to put things back together. ... show more

  • Low stop for binos
Size: 72mm
Use two with APM 16x70 MS ED binoculars. They cut right through the haze. The Painted Desert is always hazy and the colors get washed out easily. These cut through the haze and permit excellent color to pop right through. Simply a must for canyon country. They don't stop down too much and leave a fairly neutral color balance. Great for wildflowers as well. A little difficult to remove without a strap wrench. Hard for raptors in flight because the sky polarization changes, but steady wildlife helped out, depending on sun angle. Always great over water. ... show more
