Description

Your one-stop manual for every aspect of DIY motorcycle electrical repair and modification. We've all stood at the front desk of a repair shop at some point, staring at an invoice, gritting our teeth and nursing our injured wallets. All vehicles will inevitably need maintenance - and we pay a premium in labor fees every time we take them in - but unlike an automobile, which has its electrical components hermetically sealed within its bodywork, the electrical components on a motorcycle are on display for all the world to see. Out in the open, they are constantly subjected to destructive elements like rain, sand, salt, dust, and ultraviolet rays . . . virtually everyone who owns a motorcycle will eventually have to deal with electrical problems. In How to Troubleshoot, Repair, and Modify Motorcycle Electrical Systems, motorcycle expert Tracy Martin provides crystal-clear, fully illustrated, step-by-step instructions for every electrical repair imaginable on a bike—from the nuts- and-bolts basics to fuel-injection systems, onboard computers, repair and installation of factory and aftermarket accessories, and everything else in between. Complete with 600 full-color, how-to photos and 20 helpful diagrams, How to Troubleshoot, Repair, and Modify Motorcycle Electrical Systems will keep your bike on the road and your wallet in your pocket. • Good for a beginner...
The book is full of pictures and diagrams, although many of them are not of the best quality and are pixelated. As far as the content goes, I would recommend this book for the beginner who just wants to do occasional and not very complicated modifications to their motorcycle: installing new lights, heated grips, and so on. There is a part where there is an interview with an ECM (yeah, I'm serious), where the author tries to explain in a very simplified way how they work. He goes over the basic principles of sensors and almost at the end there are a few exercises that are going help you read and analyze diagrams (extra points for this). The projects he presents are not the ones that I would call the most "exciting", except for the part where he showed how to install a wheel lighting system and how to convert a point ignition to electronic ignition. However, they are the most complicated things you would do. If you already know about diodes, MOSFETs, Ohms law, etc. This won't be an interesting reading for you. This book would pretty basic for the experienced audience. For example, I was expecting to read the different ways to replace/modified those old turn signal relays so they can work with LEDs. Something that I'm pretty sure many would like to hear. But not a single word about them. I new update would be necessary. I also have to mention that he uses his electrical projects chapter to advertise different products (heated grips, alarms, etc). There were many things I found interesting but I was expecting more. Now, if you want to go into more advanced topics get the Motorcycle Electrical Techbook by Tony Tranter. But I warn you, it's heavier in theory. For example, the first chapter introduces equations and you will need your basic algebra to understand them, and it also goes over different electronic components which could be overwhelming for a beginner. The reading is way more complete than this book but not much on the "hands-on" side. ... show more

  • Highly recommended
A very good book to have on the shelf for when your cursed with an electrical problem with your bike. The descriptions and photos of how to trouble shot problems, install accessories and deal with motorcycle electrics are all good. My only complaint is that the author pushes the products of his sponsors and advertisers too much which is a bit annoying. That being said I would have no problem using any of the products the author touts and down the road I will probably use the book as a source to locate electrical parts and accessories. Mechanical help can be found pretty easily. Getting help with electrics is something else entirely so a copy of this book may be a huge time saver when the inevitable electrical gremlins strike. After reading this book I'm a lot more confident that I can handle electrical issues with my bikes. A bit of advice, pack a pocket DVM, a copy of the wiring diagram for your bike, and possibly a 12V test light in your kit when touring. You will most likely make a lot of new friends with the pocket DVM at rallies. ... show more
