Description

Five minutes may not seem like a lot of time to allow yourself to work on a drawing, as artists have been known to take days, months, and even years to complete a single work of art. However, as this book will prove, you can draw some really cool stuff in just under five minutes. By limiting their time, artists will start to see only the most essential parts of a subject while communicating action, movement, and expression into one timed drawing. This book is jam-packed with step-by-step lessons for drawing cool objects quickly – in 5-minutes or less! Author, artist, and instructor Catherine V. Holmes will start by teaching you how to quickly interpret basic information onto paper using simple but meaningful lines made with purpose. Start by observing, then draw the main shapes within your object. Next, you’ll find simple lines and smaller shapes that build on the original ones, blocking in areas with lines and curves to represent the major details of your subject. The final steps should be filling your subject in with tone and refining shadows and highlights. Drawing under a time limit is a wonderful exercise that will help you learn how to draw more instinctively and gain a better understanding of form. The final outcome is not meant to be a polished drawing, but rather an all-around practice exercise that will improve your game and help you draw really some cool stuff with ease. The fifth book in the How To Draw Cool Stuff series, this exciting new title will teach you how to create simple illustrations using basic shapes and a drawing technique that simplifies the process of drawing, all while helping you construct height, width, and depth in your work. It will guide you through the creative thought process and provide plenty of ideas to get you started. Read more

  • With instructions I can draw!
I am amazed that I can draw. The subjects are fun and interesting. I’ve done half the drawings in the book. I bought it as entertainment for the summer. I highly recommend this book and learning to draw. It’s fun!

  • Great instruction book
This is a really well written drawing instruction book--it actually is a step by step workbook starting out with easy drawings and getting more complex--I actually already did the first drawing exercise within minutes of opening book--is best to order one of the many pencil kits found on amazon cause then you have NO excuse for not trying out the exercises lol--the pencil kit I got came with a sketch pad so after finishing drawing I even dated it so I can see my progress--drawing not perfect but looks kinda good smiles--I'm hoping to see improvement going forward --so if you've ever wanted to learn to draw I suggest you get this book as whole thing not cost that much to learn to draw ... show more

  • I can really do this!
I bought a jewelry armoire that was supposed to hang from my “she-shed” bedroom. My husband was afraid it was gonna fall, so he bolted it to the door. I didn’t like the bolts showing on the other side of the bedroom door, so I decided I was just gonna paint daisies around the bolt heads… well, I got carried away and ended up painting the entire door, and I had a ball! I watched a few videos about painting with acrylics and I fell in love. Keep in mind, I am not an artist by any stretch of the imagination, I just followed some directors for painting flowers, I remembered watching Bob Ross painting trees… I got this book because I wanted to be able to draw some things! I drew the battery and some books… I’m having a ball! A friend asked me to paint some sunflowers for her bathroom… that’s what I’m working on and trying to get them even and looking like flowers! I’m working on perceptive… I’m very excited about all this! I saw the picture of the mermaid and she’s perfect for my bathroom door… her twin is going on the other side! ... show more

  • Pretty cool and not intimidating:)
I have been perusing the book 'art before breakfast' and wishing I could take the time to do some quick sketches every morning. But I'm so critical of myself that there is no way I can just doodle something quick and be satisfied that it looks like a pile of doo-doo when it was supposed to be a drawing of my dog. So when I was offered the opportunity to review this book, I was really excited. The instructional sketches are not intimidating and the 2 I have done so far didn't come out half bad. The beauty of it, to some degree, is that you cant be overly critical of your work when your sketching a piece of candy corn or an egg. Would I normally choose either of those as subjects for a drawing? No. But the simplicity keeps me interested bc I'm not frustrated that it doesnt look exactly like the authors final product when I'm finished with mine. There are more in depth, but still speedy, doodles in this book. Everything from a giraffe to a portrait of the back of kneeling woman. So dont think this is too rudimentary just bc it shows you how to draw candy corn....I think you will find this to be a good way to spend sometime unplugged, put down your phone and get in a creative groove. Its relaxing and meditative in a way. If the book had a lay-flat binding, I would give it 5 stars. I hope my humble opinion helps you in some way. Thank you for reading . ... show more

  • Great for the beginner.
This is a great book and perfect for beginners. It breaks things down for you without getting into too much theory. It's always good to learn theory but if you're just looking to do nice quick art, this book is perfect.

  • Good examples but poor instructions
As an adult beginner, I find the exercises in the book reasonable and interesting. However, the instructions are vague. For example, it would tell me to use the blending tool, but I was very unsuccessful until I watched some Youtube videos. Another major problem in the book is that the drawing in each step is a different drawing, not the progression of the same drawing. For example, the mailbox's post is thicker in step 5 than step 3. The dinosaur's leg is further away from its tail in the beginning than at the end. It gives me the doubt that the author did not follow their own steps to reach the end result. Yet another problem is that using an eraser to create a highlight didn't really work for a small drawing. There is simply no eraser than can create a thin, precise white line. So to achieve good result, the student should draw at a much larger scale than the book demonstrates, at least twice the size. Finally, many exercises easily take 20 to 30 minutes. They are not 5 minute drawings for beginners. ... show more
