  • Fresh, approachable and consumer oriented
House Beautiful is fresh, smart and attractively laid out. It straddles the line between design and practicality. It takes over where Domino left off and is a new incarnation of House & Garden. It has none of the haughtiness of AD or monotony of Veranda, nor is it a crafty BH&G. It does not espouse a traditional, country or contemporary lifestyle, instead each issue runs the gamut of style. Their interiors articles feature homes that combine design genres and display an individualistic flair, yet there is such a livability to every home featured. To me, that is the essence of home design. The interiors feature stories are written in question/answer format. No thesaurus’ worth of adjectives to describe what is featured in the photographs. They let the designers speak to the interiors, the process, their inspirations and the clients’ wants and needs. Simple, direct. The layouts highlight the photographs, full size, double page spreads, large format and they portray a variety of rooms throughout the house not just a select few. I find it much more interesting to see how all of the rooms relate to one another and how they translate a design vision throughout. This is a rather long review because I simply love this magazine and hope people will give it a try. So many design magazines have folded in recent years, I want HB to stay. For those who complain about the number of ads, seriously? ALL magazines are loaded with ads, that’s how they pay for all of those glossy pages The cost of your subscription doesn’t even cover postage and handling. (Note: I don’t work for publishers or an ad agency, this is just how it works.) Some of the other features that I find make it something to look forward to every issue: 1. A kitchen and also a bath of the month feature. Most design pubs have one issue where they might focus on these rooms or more commonly, they are just one tiny image amongst all of the other lavish photos. HB provides reference information for some of the highlights in these rooms. Not the reference where you have to look for the two-point type in the back of the magazine only to find that it’s To the Trade Only, but actual shopping reference for the average consumer. 2. Other notable regular columns included in every issue: The Best! dedicated to presenting new products via large format images with minimal copy; a color report with designer recommendations as to use and complementary colors; plus a column each for new wallpaper, fabrics and rugs. I’ve been introduced to so many products I wouldn’t have normally been privy to and that are normally only accessible to interior designers. 3. A new design book is also highlighted every issue—not the postage stamp image with press release blurb—an actual review/synopsis to peak your interest. 4. Tablescape. So often neglected, inspirations for luxurious table settings. Not the too-cutesy or holiday themed table, but the make every day special because you used distinctive items of exceptional quality. I’m not quite sure when House Beautiful was revamped, but I’m happy I gave it another try years after letting my subscription lapse. I thought I had outgrown it, gave it as a housewarming gift subscription, thumbed through it at giftees’ home and decided to order my own subscription. I look forward to every issue and even though I subscribe to numerous design and fashion magazines, this is the one stacked in my library for future reference. ... show more

  • My house is decorated like this magazine
Two years ago we bought this outdated, worn out but totally charming house. My friend suggested that I subscribe to some magazines and get some ideas for redecorating. Has beautiful has some amazing designers and the photography is great. I highly suggest doing the same thing when you are looking for ideas for a new room. Their designs cover all different styles from modern to shabby chic to cottage to eclectic. ... show more

  • Full of inspiration.
I love the ideas and concepts presented in this magazine. As a new subscriber, I am very impressed. Normally advertisements in a magazine bother me, but even the ads in this one are great, because they are for stylish and innovative home products that you don't see every day (for example, a line of boldly coloured kitchenaid commercial ovens that I had no idea were even available on the market.) I've only had one issue so far, but it included a variety if beautiful and inspiring articles for all types of people. Articles ranging from one that displayed stunning photos of a masculine bachelor pad, all the way to an article with different methods of decorating a high traffic mud room for families with small children. I just wish I had the finances to execute all of these awesome ideas. I highly recommend this magazine to anyone with an interest in interior decorating: even if you're just looking to update a few rooms in your own home. ... show more

  • Great magazine, not a great price
I LOVE this magazine. Yes, a lot of what they show is quite expensive, but it is just chock full of inspiration, from paint colors to furniture to full-on rooms. My tastes tend to run on the more colorful and modern side, so magazines that just feature neutrals and shabby chic and country-style are totally not my thing, which knocks out a lot of shelter magazines. They have a little bit for everyone, style-wise, and the modern styles that they show tend to be much more accessible than what other magazines feature (Dwell, I'm looking at you). I tried to let my subscription expire, just to save some money, but I couldn't go one month without it, so I subscribed again via Amazon. And this is where it loses a star: I subscribed to HB a couple of days ago, and then today decided to buy the current issue off the newsstand so I wouldn't miss an issue. I get it home, one of the tear cards falls out...a one-year subscription through HB is only $12 for a year or $22 for 2 years. I paid $15 for a 1-year subscription through Amazon. I find that normally the subscriptions through Amazon are a good deal, so of course I am disappointed by the price difference! So, love the magazine, but, I hate to say, don't buy it through Amazon). ... show more

  • All advertisements.
Love few pages of actual decor, however majority of pages are for advertisements which I understand pays their bills but designs would have to be outstanding.

  • Better than the rest.
I love home decor magazines. I recently went through stacks of about ten different magazines. I would not have guessed but House Beautiful has the most stunning photography and incredible inspiration for home decor choices. Though they show top of the line, don't let that stop you. You can learn so much from the choices of setting, color, height, layout, etc. that can make such a difference. ... show more

  • Beautiful and well produced but not very long
Love this magazine. It's warm and beautifully photographed. The only caveat is how thin it is. Doesn't seem like very good value for the money. But then again, at least they don't pad the pages with ads. That's something. Also, they offer very good deals, so it's ultimately worth it if you don't overpay. ... show more

  • not particularly inspiring
I recently ordered several magazines when Amazon had the five dollar per year promotion going. I had enjoyed this magazine in the past as a once in a while pick at the bookstore. I've just received my first issue and found that it seems very "light" on decorator content. Personally I agree with some of the less flattering reviews of this magazine that the articles can get lost with the ads. It almost seems as if they used a very budget template to create the article layout. Also the feel of what they are covering seems so spare that even catalogs seem more "homey" than the homes they featured. Struck me as odd that *all* the homes they featured seemed like the set designer was only about 60% done with dressing the shoot. Looked like someone was just moving in and had not finished adding those touches that make it special. Just my opinion.... For five dollars I won't complain too hard but if the first issue is any indication of what to expect I probably would not renew this one. In fairness it has only been one issue though and over the course of the year if things change, I'll revise this review accordingly. ... show more

  • Basic styles ideal for first time house buyers.
I was discouraged with the kitchens shown. The all white theme continued! I like wood and cabinets with wood grain. Most designs were very basic. I hoped for more elegant and classic decor.

  • Mostly advertisements and what little content there is is dissatisfying.
Being stuck with a year - long subscription of this magazine (see below), I really tried to like it. It gets 2 instead of 1 star because the initial flip- through is striking and fun - for about 30 seconds. once the initial "Oooh, color. . ." feelings wear off you realize this magazine is 65% full-page ads for post-modern concrete counter-tops, mattresses, and ridiculous floral textiles. the other 35% is filled with designer interviews or "kitchens of the month" spreads that lack content and leave you dissatisfied. I guess I got this magazine looking for inspiration and ideas, but the designs are so far-fetched that unless you are looking to redo your sitting room in fuchsia damask on an $85,000 budget or are an interior design student that just wants to appreciate other designers' creative genius this magazine is probably a waste of your time and money. a note of caution on the subscription - I signed up for it when amazon was doing a 3 issues for $0.99 thing - I saw that an auto-renew subscription would start after my initial 3/$0.99 purchase- what i didn't see was the fine fine print (if there was any) that subscription would begin after only one of the three was sent -hence, here I am 7 months later still receiving this magazine I don't care for. ... show more

  • Too many ads, not enough substance.
The deal was great, especially if you know you like this magazine.... If you dont know the magazine though, just be advised that Home & Gardens it is not. It really is filled with super modern finishes catering more towards newer homes. That and more ads for furniture and fixtures than I can count. They probably make up for 35-40% of page space. ... show more
