These aren't perfect, but they work as I expected. Wood quality and finish are very good. Straight lines and right angles. No toxic smell nor any smell. Shelves can be put in at different heights/spacing than the default design in product photo. Not ideal for books -- at least not for standing them up because slats are aligned in same direction, so thin books can fall through and you can't just shift a row of books left or right. Screw holes look very bad -- you need greater than 1/4 in covers. On the 1st one I put on 1/4 in covers and they're barely covering the holes, and will fall out any minute. Some variation in cutouts. One unit had weight bearing side beams not meet at all on horizontal cross-sections -- they're held together by heavy screws across the vertical part of the cutouts (see photo), so only each half of the beam is bearing weight (via the screws). If I were putting something heavy on top half, I'd insert a shim (maybe just a small stack of white paper) to fill the gaps. Seams don't look terrible -- as expected and not perfect. Extremely easy to assemble. 5 and 7 y.o. did most of the work in maybe 20 mins on each unit. I bought 2 of this unit and 1 of the slightly smaller version from same mfr. ... show more

I ordered one of these as "used" from Amazon and one new and got two very slightly different shelves. It's not the end of the world, but it's a little annoying. They're not going to be right next to each other so I'm sure I'll be the only person to notice, but if I put them right next to each other I think it would be noticeable -- different width and spacing on the shelf slats, different assembly of the uprights, etc. ... show more
