  • Great beginner flute, very durable.
Based on our experience, the flute is well worth the money, and more than adequate for a beginning student. We bought this flute in 2013 for my daughter, and it held up without any problem for 4 years at more or less daily use and not having done any maintenance at all. Recently, one note stopped working. The music teacher in school had it fixed, and now it plays and sounds as good as ever. However, they said that we should start looking at a better model, since this one is a beginner flute, and it is worth investing a little more for the intermediate level that my daughter is now playing at. We are looking at Yamaha and Gemeinhardt, which were the brands recommended by the teacher. Others commented already on the case, that it does not last very long, and we found the same, but even $50 aftermarket cases lasted only 2 years or so. ... show more

  • Great flute for someone in band
I feel that the price and durability of this flute makes it a great choice for kids that are starting out in band and aren't sure if they are going to stay with the flute. It's a great price, comes with everything you need to start out, and is a decently sounding flute. The only issue I had with this flute was it was horribly out of tune. I am a self taught flutist so it was difficult for me to figure out how to get this in tune. I could tune this to an A and the lower register would sound amazing but the higher register would still be out of tune. I feel that someone that is being taught in a band will be shown how to effectively tune the flute and sound great. I would say that this flute is great for students for the first few months while they get comfortable with the flute and then upgrade to a more professional student model. But starting out this is a great flute for total beginners, it can handle a few drops and is a great practice instrument on how to take care of it. ... show more

  • Hisonic flute
My 8 year old grandson decided he wanted to play the flute, and I offered to buy him one (he is not touching my Haynes or Powell instruments). This flute was inexpensive, and, surprisingly, has a split E mechanism, which makes the high E, normally the most difficult note on a flute, VERY much easier to play. Just adding that mechanism to the order for a new flute cost over $600 on a Powell, the last time I looked. It's probably more now. When the flute got here, one of the keys was sticking closed. It looked like a problem with rough finishing of the ends of the rods on which the keys are mounted, so I took it apart and smoothed the ends of the rods. The keys work fine now. The flute is light-weight, which is important for a child, and it plays very easily in all three octaves, which is also important. The sound is fine. It doesn't measure up to a Powell, but it costs more than 100 times less. For a beginner, who might not stick with the instrument, that's an important consideration. If he sticks with it, and becomes good enough, I'll give him one of my good flutes when he is 18 or so. Anyone buying a flute should be aware that they have to be serviced periodically. In my case that's roughly every two years. Service will cost more than the purchase price of this flute. A complete overhaul for a Haynes or Powell is currently about $1200, but the cost for a beginner's instrument is a lot less. My instruments go to Sherrie Lee in Grand Junction, CO, but there are many other good repair shops, all over the country. I had very bad luck the two times I took an instrument to a local music shore for repair. Find a good flute specialist and send it there; playing on a poorly adjusted instrument is difficult and very discouraging. ... show more

  • and the music teacher was happy with it for beginner purposes
Last year I purchased a Hisonic clarinet for my oldest. The price was right, and the music teacher was happy with it for beginner purposes. As a result of that experience, despite Guitar Center's best efforts, I went with this flute for the next kid in line for school lessons. It again seems to be perfect for at least a beginner. I helped unpack and assemble it. It seemed quite sturdy, and from what I gather it plays as expected. ... show more

  • Worked well
This flute worked very well for me through marching band. It had a few minor issues such as the thumb B flat key constantly developing a leak, but it was no problem to adjust it when necessary. I was pleasantly surprised by the tone of this flute and how it remained in good working condition throughout the marching season. Many other flutes that I have owned have not fared so well. This would make an excellent flute for a beginner or a high school student in marching band. I doubt that it would be a good choice for an advanced player however ... show more

  • I don't know about the flute, but my daughter loved it...
I got this as a replacement for my daughter in Jr High - who had her other flute stolen... that didn't make me happy. I don't know anything about flutes - I couldn't tell a good flute from a good oboe from a decent hobo... that said, my daughter loves it. She was happy - she gave me many hugs and jumped up an down a bit... and I loved that. ... show more

  • Great for the Price!!
I wanted to teach my kids music. I played flute in concert and marching band 25 yrs ago. I ordered this and have been having a blast playing, The only notes I've had trouble with reaching is any high octive G and above... but, that's really okay with me, and again I have not played in 25 yrs... so take my review with a grain of salt. I enjoy the tone and quality for the money. Shipping was fine and it was well packed. It came with a hard shell case and cleaning rod. It's been a joy, Thank You!! ... show more

  • Glad I chose this one!
Fantastic! Got this to replace a cheaper one we purchased a few months ago that didn't make it a whole school year... This one fits together perfectly, and had the perfect sound right out of the box, no adjustments necessary.
