  • Ambient Light Rejection Delivers|Really Crappy Smart TV App With No Software Updates
Visually, this is a great tv. Everything below the asterisk-line below is my original review. However, after nearly one year, this AndroidTV-based software has no downloadable updates, and it is one sorry Smart TV app. Separation is poor between the television controls and the Smart TV operation. Here is what I mean. When you first turn on the set, it is more or less unusable the first five minutes you try to use it. Notice that I didn't say "the first five minutes it's on". It's simply sluggish and non-responsive for those first five minutes you interact with it. If you power on the set, and wait 10 minutes before trying to do anything, the first five minutes will still be sluggish and non-responsive. Now, you could (and I have) use a different external Smart TV set top, like Apple TV or Roku, both of which can provide a very snappy interface pretty quickly after they are powered on. However, you still need to do things like adjust the volume or select your TV input source or change the picture mode (because the device does not hold settings, and randomly switches from "Vivid" to "Energy Saving" or "Theater Night") using the remote provided with the set. And those controls are useless for the first several minutes that you use them, just like the Smart TV app. If you can't adjust the volume or select a different input source because your crappy Smart TV software is still doing it's startup hangover, you are working with a terrible design. Lots of IOT devices are delivered with crappy software initially, but then you get bailed out when the manufacturer fixes the software. Not here. It can't find updates online, ever, even though it is connected to the internet, and has no difficulty streaming all kinds of content or downloading apps not pre-installed. Also, HiSense's website provides no alternate means or instructions for updating the software. Finally, the device occasionally overheats, and a throws a message on screen which says "Please switch on the self-cleaning mode to remove the dust, to prevent the TV from overheating." Search the documentation. Guess what. There is no self-cleaning mode. So, while it is truly a remarkable projector TV that can provide a bright clear picture no matter how many windows you have open on a sunny day, but it has major issues, many of which could be fixed by the manufacturer, but haven't been. ********* I have installed this on the main level of my house, which is open floor plan and windows on the three sides that the screen is not mounted on. It is perfectly bright in the middle of the day without the need to turn off lights or close blinds or windows. Ambient light rejection solves the problem, unique to projectors, of the image washing out due to ambient light. The big negative of this tv is that there is NO MENTION ANYWHERE that the screen requires a difficult, complex assembly project. It is a minimum two-person job. Most TV installers do not know how to assemble this type of screen. I found a smart installer who was willing to work through the manual and it took him and his helper (me) 4 hours to finish the job. However, once installed, it is wonderful TV. ... show more

  • We love the TV, installation yourself is a pain but doable
First of all we love this TV / Projector. I have waited a little while before writing a review just to make sure everything was smooth and no kinks. We have had it set up for almost 6 weeks now. The picture quality I feel it great especially for a projector. My husband is a TV guy and he said he feels other TVs have better TV clarity and refresh rate as he can see it in a some of the action scenes that the refresh rate isn’t as much as some of as newer high end TV’s but to me it’a not noticeable and to him he said he doesn’t notice much when he stops looking for it. We gushes more when we watch newer movies that are made to look enhanced with the 4K and played on our 4K Apple TV. Then the TV really shines. TV watching like football is different. Either way we feel it was a good purchase and we are very happy with it. The TV does a fantastic Job in light or dark rooms. Looks the same as any TV would. Assembly... that took some patience and a lot of time but it can be done. I was worried about trying to do it ourselves but we couldn’t get anyone in our area. It took my husband and I 16 hours NOT including breaks. We had the hardest time calibrating it AND we had the screen upside down for a time which made it look washed out. Scared us to death. We thought we did all that work to put it together and was going to hate it. Flipped it around and it was GREAT! I recommend using a 4K device to watch your movies and shows on. It helps with picture quality. Try to get assembly if you can but it may be difficult. I called the company and they didn’t offer it in our area and Amazon has an assembly option which we purchased only to be told 2 days later that they didn’t have anyone in our area to assemble.and we live in the Dallas area which is a pretty big city. So know going in 1) there’s a good chance you may have to do this yourself and 2) it’s doable and 3) leave a full weekend to work on it. The screen took a lot of time to do and you practically need a “clean room” to do it in. You have to be very careful with it. Calibrating was the hardest, their website or link wasn’t always working. It’s very difficult to try to do it manually too. We never could get it to fit precisely the right way on all sides, always sticking out somewhere. Using their link to calibrate is almost a must. In the end it is worth the money, worth the time. We have so many family movie nights up in our media room now. The kids love video games on it. ... show more
