The padding is only an inch thick, and the mattress is very firm, so I added a 2-inch memory foam mattress topper, and it's very comfortable now. I found the "inflating" process fascinating. But as the instructions say, it really does take 72 hours for it to reach it's full size, expanding a little further each day. I have noticed no smells, and the twin size that I purchased was easy to open up and place. I purchased this for a guest bedroom and I am very happy with it.
