I got these to try out gouache watercolor, but mostly to be able to use a water-based white over transparent colors. When they arrived I could not figure out why they weighed so much. I was expecting a tiny case like my Winsor Newton Cottman travel set, but these are HUGE. I don't expect I will ever use them up, but I have to say, the paste consistency and the number of colors are interesting and very different from traditional watercolor tabs, so we shall see. ... show more

    • The BEST Beginner/Intermediate Painter set!

The most important thing to remember is this set is only about ~$30. That being said, if you are a beginner or even a not-pro, THIS is the set you want to buy. The colors are wonderfully opaque. When I opened my set, some of the colors such as "nude" and "jade green" were a little dry. That's to be expected in a $30 paint set shipped from China. That being said, the colors VERY EASILY came back to life after adding a couple drops of water and stirring with a toothpick. Even when completely dry on my mixing palette, I was able to add just a little water and stir to make my paint come back to life effortlessly. Unless you are Picasso himself, or making a living off of your art, THIS is the set you want to buy. NOTE/Hack: When I opened the paint pods, I didn't peel off the entire film and instead, used a razor to cut small holes in each pod. The idea is that it will help keep the set cleaner and help retain moisture as the paint set ages. It also helps keep the paint name visible for use. Will probably need to cut the whole film off after a fair bit of use, but I think the film-holes are the best way to promote the longevity of this paint set. ... show more

The contained pods were beautifully presented in their container which also included a mixing palette and several brushes. This is the first time I'm using this medium and I'm excited about my results. I would suggest that this makes a beautiful gift for a budding artist or for someone who has used water colors and or acrylic paints. The only difference is that acrylic paints can be use on just about any porous surface. These paints (gouache) can only be used on watercolor paper, but the paints have a more intense value than watercolors. ... show more

This is the first gouache paint set I’ve ever bought for myself and used. I have only used it once before in college, so my experience with these paints is not on a professional level. However, my experience with watercolor paints is much more extensive. This Himi Gouache palette came in a large variety of color, and included was three different types of brushes that adequate, but do not hold water as well as some of my fancier brushes but I wasn’t fully expecting them to be top notch. I do advise to invest in a palette knife to use along with this kit, if you don't already have one. The paint itself dries quickly which is nice, but if you want to be able to build color you have to do so over a few different layers after they have completely dried. There is some technique in using these that I suggest researching a little just in case you’ve never used this brand before. This palette is also very saturated, so if you want more natural hues you’re going to be doing a lot of mixing. Fun to use. Messy to manage but a cover of cling wrap or similar cover helps. Must be kept level. Comes as a sort of gelatin and needs no water. Haven't used it long enough to know if it dries out and if it dries, can it be reconstituted. Anyway, lots of fun colors for lots of possibilities. It's for beginners as much as anything is. I am a beginner and it was very easy to use. It is still necessary to watch some tutorials in order to know how much water to add and create the perfect creamy consistency needed to apply. Some think the best gouache will come in tubes but I think it is their personal opinion. I love this one!!
