  • Many, many benefits and a couple of caveats
Size: 15.5 Pound (Pack of 1)
For some reason, the science of nutrition has become more like religion in modern times....as if what the owner believes will magically make the dog healthy. Dogs and their bodies cannot share our belief systems. I've been using Science Diet brand for over 30 years now, various formulas for individual pets with their needs. They do very well. Great, in fact. There is the correct amount of protein: they can digest and metabolize it all and not have excess go through them or harm the renal system and cause stones. The calcium is correctly combined with other things so it is available to the dog. The volume I need to feed for each meal is small enough that it does not risk bloat, cause gas, or interfere with digestion. In other words, it fits comfortably in my dog's stomach when it expands with the moisture in there. The bag lasts a LONG time because meal sizes are small due to nutritional density. It does not have "flavors" dogs cannot taste (they don't have taste buds like we do) or artificially added colors and shapes dogs do not care about. I measure the meals with an actual measuring cup, so I know if my dog is losing his appetite right away. I use small bites for my larger dog because it slows down his eating, taking him longer to finish, which is healthier and allows him to enjoy it more. I like to feed poultry-based foods as they are easiest to digest, but lamb and turkey are high in tryptophan, which can be soothing and support good mental health. When it comes to ingredients, I trust what veterinarians and canine nutritional experts approve, not what the average consumer thinks sounds good, or what dogs would pick in a lineup (Cheetos or brownies would probably win, really, with dogs). Grapes and raisins are healthy for us, but can kill dogs. They are not just like us. This product is one I trust because it is made for domestic dogs. Yes, "biproducts" sound gross, and maybe they are, but bear in mind humans fed dogs offal and leftovers, not the best cuts, historically. Dogs got what they got, and ate what we ate, and we were pretty poor. We taught them to help us hunt, but also not to kill and eat the things, but to bring them to us or hold them in one place, even rats (because we wanted them to kill all the rats, not just what they could eat). These guys will eat poop and raw dead birds maggots and all in the yard if they can. Cooked and properly processed biproducts are not that gross. CON: Science Diet on their smaller bags of product, like for cats, is using Velcro to allow bags to be re-sealable. It works very well, keeping the food fresher. While I currently decant the dog food into another container, I think it would be great if they added this to all sizes of bags. If you buy this, rolling it tightly and clipping, putting in large Ziplocs, or getting a container to keep it fresh (and not stale) will be the best methods. NOTE: If your dog has a confirmed allergy to a specific grain, like corn, the usual culprit, as that is New World and was not around most of the time mankind was creating dogs, then this may not be for you. Even formulas that have barley or rice sometimes have corn products, so read labels carefully or use dogfoodadvisor dot com. Limited ingredient foods can be the best thing. However, make sure the allergy is not to peas, a common culprit, used in many grain-free foods, before you go crazy. Let your vet help you ... show more

  • SOLVED FEET CHEWING
Size: 33 Pound (Pack of 1)
I had been trying everything I could think of for over a year to solve the problem of my boxer chewing and licking her feet! It was driving me crazy! I finally called a friend that has 9 dogs (some boxers too) to ask what food he uses. He told me to use this food and it solved the allergy issues with all his dogs. He has small dogs, large dogs and even a Great Dane. He uses this same food for all of them. So I bought the exact food he uses (I picked the same picture on the bag but in lamb because she's allergic to chicken). Within a couple of weeks I could tell she wasn't chewing as much. But within a couple of months, she wasn't chewing at all! It happened so gradually every day for a couple of months, I hadn't really noticed how much better she had gotten! I literally had tried so many different things! I changed food many times, added expensive powders and tried different special treats. I had even asked the vet and I didn't get an exact answer! This food is a little more expensive, but it is worth every penny! ... show more

  • Oshie's Favorite!
Size: 4.5 Pound (Pack of 1)
We currently have a 7 month old puppy at home, and when I tell you it's been a real struggle to get him to eat on a schedule, it's an understatement. When we first brought him home we started on Baby Blue and after our first vet appointment we switched him to Royal Canin Medium Puppy and he would eat that, but it was still a struggle (It was a lot of hand feeding). About 2 months ago our vet recommended us to start switching him to adult food, and there were 3 brands she recommended, we started with the Pro Plan (my family has a lot of dogs around so thought it might be good to do the same food as others) he would NOT eat it. So I passed that along to my sister-in-law to finish that bag. So finally, we ended up with the Hill's Science Diet Adult (1-6) Chicken and Barley and at least with this past week we have NOT had any issues with him wanting to eat. He will finish his entire bowl when it's given to him!! We've had solid bathroom breaks with no issues. I couldn't be happier! My only wish was there were more flavors with the regular adult food. ... show more

  • Been using Science Diet over 30 years
Size: 15.5 Pound (Pack of 1)
I don’t usually buy the lamb and rice kibble because it’s a little pricey. However, my dog was low on food, and she’d been a really good girl that day, so I decided to indulge her. Usually I buy the larger sized kibble, but despite my searching, I couldnt find it. So, between the size of the kibble and the new flavor, it was with a bit of trepidation that I filled her bowl. Clearly the flavor was not a problem. She came right over and stuck her nose into the food. But it was a bit difficult at first fir her to eat the smaller kibble. However, dogs being dogs (I shudder when I think of what I’ve seen dogs eat over the years), she got over that issue right away. I’ve been feeding my dogs Science Diet kibble for over 30 years, when my vet suggested it for our rescue dog. And there are so many obvious advantages to feeding a dog kibble that, even if it wasn’t better for them, would still influence me to buy it. Really, in general dogs become a part of our families. I wouldn’t give my children canned food to eat at every meal, because I want them to be healthy and have a long life. I’m not a person who feels that my dogs are my children, but they are still very important members of my family. So I want to make sure that they get the best nutrition available. ... show more
