  • Cool Toy
I like Hike Crew. I've tested a few of their outdoors products and have found them to be good but not quite exceptional, at fair to excellent prices. This night vision device is no different; however, it appears to be a catalog item that they have ordered in bulk and customized with their name, including in the firmware. I don't believe Hike Crew is the actual manufacturer. If true, not a problem for me. The unit is lightweight but well-constructed. Build quality shows in the listing’s pictures: it's pretty good. Nothing creaks or has weird gaps or loose parts. It's all well put together and solid, but at the end of the day it is a $130 plastic toy, so don't expect a pair of Leica quality binoculars. The strap is especially nice: Instead of having to do macramé to get the strap installed, it just has simple and elegant hooks on each end. Nice! Also nice, the unit comes with a Hike Crew branded 32GB Micro SD card for saving your videos and pictures. For the files sizes this thing generates, 32GB is very roomy. And while we're on the subject of nice, the semi rigid carrying case is nicer than it needed to be, and is the kind of extra effort Hike Crew puts into their offerings. As other reviews have mentioned, these are not "binoculars." It is a monocular with a digital screen and a bright infra-red light. One of the two "tubes" on one side is an objective lens, the other is actually the infrared illuminator. The viewing screen on the other side is bright and comfortable to view, but the resolution is poor, meaning everything looks grainy, even in daylight. This is one of the principal reasons I call this device a toy. No image or video you get from this will have any kind of quality to it at all. The listing says “stunning pictures,” but they are stunning only for their poor quality. The live viewscreen is the same: grainy, with very little dynamic range. To be fair, this kind of image quality is expected at this price point, and is not a deal-breaker. This device does allow you to see things at night, and you can see them well enough to tell what they are, recognize animals, etc., without disturbing the scene with a bright light. It’s really a lot of fun to use, but nothing you record with these is going into National Geographic. Or even the local Pennysaver. I should also mention that there is no magnification here, like you would see with analog binoculars. There is a digital cropping feature that they call a zoom, but it spreads out already too few pixels even farther, resulting in a mess. So, 1x magnification here. One of the biggest drawbacks of this device, for me, it the requirement to use six AA alkaline batteries. You can possibly use rechargeable, but it’s not recommended by the maker because they don’t provide the correct voltage. That means you’ll be running through a lot of batteries if you play with this a lot. In the year 2021, why are we still making electronic devices that require alkaline, disposable batteries? It’s a nuisance. In practice, my use for this is while camping, which means a set of batteries will last while because I don’t camp as often as I’d like. Bottom line for me: this is a fun toy, reasonably priced. When you see “night vision binoculars” and $130 on the same line, it can be exciting. But what you actually get is worth about $130. It might satiate your appetite for this kind of device, or it might prompt you to get something more advanced. But either way, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed if you understand it’s well priced but not some kind of over the top bargain. ... show more

  • I am pretty impressed with the box and the item I got. Simple and easy to use.
Light weight and sturdy. Item is well made out of good material The screen is bright and clear. Left binocular is the objective and the right is the light source. This is not an optical device and it does not operate without batteries. You need 6 AA size batteries to operate it. I wish it had a power in slot to allow users to connect this thing to a powerbank. The item than would have been far more reliable and useful. It is not easy to figure out a good dark spot in the city any more. Although I tried it in the toilet and have seen that it is functional, I also took it to the nearby park and chose the darkest spot possible. The distance it can show and the clarity of the picture was amazing. I took some pictures with my phone showing how dark where I stand is and, from the screen of the HikeCrew night vision to show the difference. It was impressive to me. Zoom function does not seem to be optical. The picture quality reduces dramatically both day and night when the zoom function is used, it appears to be completely digital zoom. So, I am glad that they did not put another set of buttons for zoom function and combined it with the IR level. if you click on the IR+/Zoom+ button it increases the IR level, if you keep your hand pressed, that is zoom in. the same applies to IR- and Zoom out. Capability reduces greatly if you are behind a glass. No, possibly you can't drive with this. The rubber band covering the viewing screen does not fit to the face completely and light of the screen leaks to your face inevitably. 32 GB memory card included in the package is real high capacity for storing pictures and videos. it is guaranteed that you will run out of battery before storage space for pictures. I loved the box this item comes in. It is a semi-hard box that gives a good protection. Careful with what you put in to the storage pocket, it is not zipped so you can drop everything in the darkness. I would say it is as good as another item that I have which is double the price of this one. Sure, the resolution is not that good to take pictures and may be this is not the most suitable device to lay in the wilderness and take award winning photographs but for emergency situations, road trip, camping or few nights at the cabin type of holiday, this item is a big must like keeping a jumper cable in the car. I wouldn't call this a toy at all. It is fully functional and would be a vital help when needed. I surely will keep this in my emergency luggage and take with me to any road trip. If I knew this technology performs this good at this price, I surely would have bought it long ago. Overall, it is a five star device and I highly recommend it. ... show more

  • OK
These night vision binoculars produce technically HD photos and videos but the pictures are practically not very clear which I understand. If you are expecting to see things in the dark as you see in day time your expectations will not be satisfied. I doubt any night vision device can do that. The build quality is good as the binoculars don't feel cheap. They are nice device for anyone who are interested in wildlife watching but not for professionals. The binoculars require 6 alkaline batteries to operate. ... show more
