  • The Sound.. Is defying for the size of these bad boys :) Onyx Studio 5
These things have managed to blow me away. I know its not the best speaker out there, but for all the research i have done, these are still the best bang for buck, literally and figuratively. The bass these produce is quite staggering for the size, and with my apartment and the walls the sound resonates and creates a good vibration in the room, like its an actual sub. I have the Sony XB-31, and the XB-41, both with the lights, and i have been overall satisfied for a while with those. Sound great, but with these i have come to the realization that with the Sony, you are paying more for the all around experience of the speaker, and not just the sound quality. This I got on sale for 109, and the other one I ordered because I wanted the blue one. And as soon as I got the first one, it was almost a no brain decision to get another one for travels, and the pairing together to make that "stereo" sound. (Onyx Studio 4-2 tweeters, and 2 "subs") Onyx 5-1 bigger sub, and a single tweeter. None the less still amazing. I have not owned the 4, but videos on you tube should suffice to explain the difference in detail. There are some minor setbacks, but mostly nit picky things such as, no accurate indication for battery level, battery life (Spoiled by the XB-41 amazing battery life in my experience, 7 months) and the slight reduction on power output when not plugged into the wall (Understandable from an engineering, and design standpoint though). But overall, super premium feel, no cop out on materials, and the handle design has grown on me. The Studio 6 is out now, with an IPX certification, not much content out yet, but from what I see, not much different, and sound is not as great. Strictly comparison speaking, because no matter what they still sound amazing, just doing in depth homework. I don't plan to use these as the throw everywhere, water, mountain adventure speakers, so the IPX, you should be fine without. These are worth the price. Heck I would say.., there worth 200 if not more, most speakers in the class were looking at at those price points barely stack up. Still good, but just suited to different listeners/environments. Overall amazing, and I think unless your super picky about it, or over audiophile about everything and expect these to match home theater, and crazy headphone setups you will thoroughly enjoy them. I myself am not a scientist about it, but to average; a very picky chooser on sound quality. These satisfy with ease with little drawback. Not worth enough to mention though because nothing is perfect, and for what you get... Man, just try it yourself. ... show more

  • Great bang for your bucks
I have to say the material used for this speaker look and feel amazing, build quality is top notch. I would say it’s because their initial price on Harman Kardon website is $450 so they have to try their best to justify the price. Even at $300 these would still worth it let alone $180. Now to the sound quality, I would say that it’s great for the price, maybe not up to higher fidelity standard but for the average consumer, these would be more pleasing to their ears. The lower frequencies are more pronounced, bass are strong and boomy, it’s almost leaking to the vocals but only hanging by a hair, highs are not the strongest so it won’t satisfy your rock, classical musics but anything would be great. Now what you could do is to change the EQ on your music source to make sure your music is more enjoyable. I find these speaker too bass-heavy out of the box and still trying to play with EQ for each listening session. Battery life is NOT Great, definitely not 8 hours but more like 4.5 to almost 5. I got some trouble with connecting it to my MacBook Pro 2017 but the 11 inch iPad and the iPhone work great and seamlessly. The box also come with 3 different power cords for traveling which is a great deal for my future travel to Asia. Overally I would rank the Onyx Studio 5 over the JBL Charge, UE portable speakers and Bose Revolve Plus. The power of the sound is just better in the class and also much cheaper than the Bose, which look like a toy that cost $300 and sound weak if you’re playing anything with bass ... show more

  • Sound Quality
It's amazing that from reading some of the other comments posted on hear that some people are expecting this to be a speaker that is just as loud as a 5.1 or 7.2 home speaker system or a set of high end speakers for your computer. It's portable people. Use the onyx studio 5 speaker in a office setting such as I do and you will be amazed at what comes out of that round oval sphere, but you should be amazed at home as well. Those of you who say there is too much bass, go to your sound adjustments on your device and tone down the bass, increase the treble to your liking. Its that simple. I bought the Onyx Studio 5 speaker to use at home and at the office. Co-workers 4 offices down and some surrounding offices, stop by and ask me what kind of system do you have in here? When I point to the corner of my desk, their jaws drop because they can believe the clarity and deep bass sound coming from the Onyx 5 speaker and it not even turned up to the half way point. Fridays is always a party!!!! I was originally going to get this Onyx 5 speaker from sprint for $199 (regularly $497) which they have had at that price since black Friday of 2018. Trust me, you can find it cheaper here which I did. Sprint told me there were no more blue ones available, anywhere. I had to prove my point to them and they were not happy about it because I didn't by from them. I knew Amazon wouldn't let me down and they didn't. Over all the sound is superb to my liking due to adjustments on my phone. ... show more
