  • Salmiak flavor stronger!
I don't know.. they didn't quite have the same flavor!

  • They are ok, but I think I should have gone for a milder version to begin with
I love licorice, but I had never tried salt licorice before. I guess I went with the Haribo stuff because it's a brand I recognize. This candy has a very high Ammonium Chloride content (I think it is the highest amount allowed by law). I didn't immediately dislike it like some people do. As a matter of fact, I really enjoyed the first couple, but I had had enough after about 6 or 7 pieces. I think the problem for me was that there was too much salt and not enough licorice. The salty taste was so intense that I could barely taste the licorice. I really started to notice an unpleasant ammonia undertone after the first couple, and it gave me a sensation in my nose like I was about to get a cold. This was a fun experiment, and it hasn't put me off salty licorice completely. I liked the concept, and I think I would enjoy a less intense version. I imagine these really strong ones are for people who eat the stuff regularly, and have developed something of a tolerance to it. In short, if you are familiar with salty licorice and enjoy quite a strong salty component, you will likely love these. If, like me, you're just curious to try the stuff, maybe go with a milder version, at least to begin with. ... show more

  • Really strong for a non-Scandinavian
I got hooked on another brand of salty licorice so decided to try these. I went from 2% to these which are 7.9% and it makes a huge difference. I couldn't stand them at first but couldn't throw them out because I'm cheap. I kept trying them about once a week and would find it slightly less disgusting each time. Then after too many holiday sweets I went back to it and found it rather delicious. I don't know if I've built up a tolerance or gotten over the initial shock of how strong it was but I think I like these now. I just can't eat more than a couple a day. I'm still not crazy about the rubbery texture and do wish I could taste more of the licorice and a bit more sweetness rather than just the ammonia taste. If you've read about salty licorice and want to try them I would strongly suggest you try a lower salmiak content one first and then work your way up from there. ... show more

  • Very mild salmiak not enough licorice flavor
While I did like them and they satisfied a craving, I prefer the super piratos ones that are hard and extra salty. These a very mild in both flavor profiles of salmiak and licorice. Perfect for salmiak beginners. They arrived timely and in perfect condition, very fresh. We need these types of candies in the U.S. pronto. I recommend and would order from this seller again. ... show more

  • I really wanted to love these...
So, I purchased these because I have been a licorice addict my entire life. As a child I loved Switzer's and Broadway, even Twizzlers (ugh!). As an adult, all of the various "Australian" licorice, particularly the Wiley Wallabee and Kookabura brands of black (real) licorice. I love the licorice coins of my youth, as well as the licorice cats. These were purchased in the hope that they would be the same coins that I loved as a child. I did read all of the reviews, and was well aware of the salty, ammonia flavor. I was ready. Or so I thought. Upon eating the first one the salt struck me, and it was immediately apparent that these were not the licorice coins that I grew up craving. Instead, the flavor was foreign, and overwhelming. To be fair, I could have grown to love these if they had a stronger licorice (black licorice) flavor, but alas, they do not. Instead, the mild licorice flavor is completely overpowered by salt and ammonia. I will admit that they really have the texture down; just not the flavor (for me). I understand that these are a regional favorite, and if this is what you know as licorice, it's likely you'll love them. For me, I can only imagine that if you fed your cat black licorice, this is likely what the litter box will taste like. ... show more

  • Well received gift by a fan of Swedish salty licorice
I personally don't care for these, but bought them as a gift for a friend who came back from a trip to Sweden and really liked the salty licorice. These were very well received. For reference, I do enjoy black licorice candies like Good and Plenty and kookaburra licorice. I tried one of these and they had a very strong salt/ammonia flavor, as well as a fairly firm texture, so if that's what you're looking for you've come to the right place. ... show more

  • Salted liquorice fish lover here
Update: put them in Mason jar I stored fish in and the sugar? From the fish has slightly coated them and now I don't mind the coins so much. --------- Howdy , so I'm coming from the side of acquiring the taste for the salted liquorice fish , these pirate coins are to salted fish what salted fish are to standard liquorice. I had an immediate soon as it touched my tongue chemical knee-jerk flavor and super strong ammonia flavor. Strong compared to salted fish. If you don't like ammonia chloride liquorice, avoid these. They are not as pleasant as the fish , and I remember thinking the fish were the worst candy I had ever tasted when I first tried one ... so , we shall see if it grows on me... my expiration date is December 2021 not a problem if they were fish , will see if I finish them that quickly. ... show more
