Description

Forget bitter cowboy coffee, forget instant muck: the GSI Outdoors Ultralight Java Drop means that the most minimalist through-hiker can enjoy real coffee every day. The nylon filter turns out a robust, sediment- free brew just as good as a pour-over at your favorite café — all at less than half an ounce in packed weight. There’s just no excuse not to have good trail coffee anymore. The nylon Java Drip filter folds flat to nest under any standard butane fuel cartridge for a compact footprint in your pack. Sturdy legs clip to your favorite backpacker mug and hold the drip cone above it while you brew, preventing the steeping that makes coffee bitter. It weighs just 0.4 ounces and measures 4.2 by 4.2 by .5 inches when extended. All GSI Outdoors products are fully warrantied to the original owner against manufacturer's defects in materials and workmanship. GSI: It’s All About The Outdoors, The Rest Is Meaningless Beginning with a few pieces of blue enamelware and a smattering of campfire accessories in 1985, GSI Outdoors continues to create unique, imaginative, and fun products that enhance the outdoor experience – including stainless steel and enamelware cookware, tableware, coffee percolators, water bottles, and more. Enjoy bold, sediment-free coffee on your next camping trip with the ultralight Java Drip coffeemaker. The Java Drip weighs less than half an ounce and nests conveniently under a standard butane fuel cartridge, so you can easily haul it on backpacking trips, car camping excursions, and picnics without taking up excess space in your pack. When you're ready for your Guatemala Antigua, simply clip the Java Drip's sturdy legs to your mug, insert a filter and coffee, and slowly pour your hot water over the top. The coffeemaker is compatible with standard 2 or 4 paper filters. • Great for backpacking!!!
Not only does this one work so well, but it is super lightweight and fits in my Toaks 1100mL pot nicely. The coffee I made out of this tasted way better than any camping coffee I have ever had before (percolators, teabag style, instant, etc.). It was so good I bought all my other backpacking friends one because they were so jealous the first trip when I had it, they all wanted a turn! It cleans off easily, I just flip it inside out and shake it, then just use a little water to rinse it off. I was skeptical about the ability to stand on the cup with those little arms but it worked well. However, make sure you center it before you start, and try and use a balanced pouring technique. I like to slowly pour from the outside edges working in like a spiral. I use a heaping tablespoon of coffee grounds for each pour to fill my Toaks 550mL drinking cup/pot ... show more

  • We love this thing!
This was probably the best camping purchase I made! I’ve had coffee from percolators and I’ve never been impressed. Either it’s weak or gross or full of grounds. This thing works perfectly. I took advice from another reviewer and brought cone filters so I could make a stronger cup of coffee (the water moves through more slowly). We love it so much, that when we got home from camping my husband wanted to use it instead of our coffee maker. One tip: if you bring a cup that does not have a lip around the rim like we did, you can put a rubber band around the cup to slide the clips over. I hadn’t tested it at home and was bummed it wouldn’t stay on the glass cup, but the rubber band worked really well at holding it on the cup. ... show more

  • Great product! And update after 3 uses
Well so far I tested it once at home and it works just as expected! I used it without a filter, but then the water drips through too fast and you get some weak coffee and it's tougher to rinse out afterwards. So I will be using a filter next time for easy clean up. Worked beautifully on a hydroflask so I'm sure it will work on most things. Feels pretty darn sturdy for it's low weight and size. Will be the best way I've made coffee in the backcountry I'm sure. I will be testing it out backpacking this next weekend. Will update if anything to add. Update after 3 actual uses: So I got to use it backpacking now 3 times. Packs down nice and light! Easy to use and works like a charm. Use a filter for stronger coffee! Makes some great coffee in the outdoors :) definitely recommend! ... show more

  • ULTRA LITE BUT SHOULD STILL COME WITH A CASE
PROS; With care brews an acceptable cup of coffee. Very excited to get this brew socks. Almost forgot Super easy to clean. Turn upside down dump grounds on dirt or in compost pile. Then with two cups of clear water I was able to get all the grounds off easily. Compact design key. I've heard much about them. Legs although they look like they'd break easily felt flexible where they fit the cup and sturdy where they are holding your coffee plus water. I have only used once, but have found these to be self evident. CONS: Directions are awful and there should be a waterproof carry pouch included. (Minus one star) Wouldn't cost more than $0.05 to make and could even be ultralight. There is a mention of putting this under your fuel canister, so they are assuming we all use isobutane fuel. As we all are sensitive to material there should be better explanation into all materials used in production. In the meantime yes a fold lock top sandwich bag works fine. Better Directions for this dripper: Best to wet your filter before adding coffee this will encourage the coffee to stay put. Measure slightly more than you usually use to get what you would call an acceptable cup of coffee. With coffee pour best to start with about 15ml slowly first and let your coffee expand so less fines end up in your cup. I use close to Turkish grind and there was next to no fines in my cup due to proper pour. After coffee has expanded You can add water 15 to 30ml at a time. If you get within 5mm of your upper coffee grind line then your water will sneak through giving you a weak cup of coffee. Concentrate your pour to the inner 2/3's of your coffee grounds. You'll see what I'm talking about and feel free to challenge as you will see the clear water drip into your cup should you get too close to the top of your coffee grind. Well I hope that helps. This really is a good filter and I would buy it again. I think it is worth $8 as there should have been a case included, and was halfway expecting one. Yes I'd buy it again and Yes I'd recommend it to a friend. ... show more

  • Weighs Next to Nothing, Collapsable, and Effective - Love It!
Picked up this and the GSI Outdoors Infinity Backpacker Mug, Blue before a recent backpacking trip and love it. It weighs nothing, and has a clever versatile design that will allow it to fit a range of mugs. I used regular ground coffee with this (without any paper filter) and it worked great, producing flavorful coffee quickly and without any stray grounds. It clips plenty securely and stays in place under the weight of coffee and liquid with no problems. I will probably use a slightly finer ground next time for a slower drip and stronger flavor, but that's a matter of taste. Love this coffee rig: super light, very effective, folds flat or collapses down small for easy storage, and sturdy enough for carefree coffee making on the trail. Big thumbs up. ... show more
