I purchased these to make a bamboo qalam (bamboo calligraphy pen for Arabic calligraphy). I didn't have many chices and never having used a bamboo qalam before I don't really know 100% what thickness and quality is best but, these seem to work so far so so I'm quite happy with it for now. If you're looking to make a bamboo qalam for Arabic caligraphy I believe these will work just fine for you. I don't think they would be thick enough to make the kind of calligraphy pen used for Chinese/Japanese calligraphy (those are generally much thicker around than these). This supply gives me enough to make over 100 bamboo qalam so I get not only good practice carving and shaping them but also have a good supply for a very long time. My 3 star rating is mostly because I don't know how it compares with what most bamboo qalams are made from. As a result I'm only confident enough to say "I like it" for this purpose. This does not apply to the quality or performance of this bamboo when used for it's intended purpose of being a stake. I have not used it in that way so I don't know how it performs or holds up to that. It seems to hold up to the use of india ink and smooth paper. ... show more

Unlike many reviews, my poles are pretty uniform in size and shape. A couple of them are too delicate. I actually purchased these as a cheap alternative to curtain rods for my apartment. That said, other reviewers who say these particular bamboo sticks are a dull, musty gray, are absolutely correct. They'll do. I may paint them or not. As a creative way around amassing more things to trash when I move, I'm satisfied. I'm sure my mother in law can use the spares for her garden. They ain't lookers, but they're not bad if you're after pure functionality. ... show more

You can't ask for a better quality product for the price. I needed some stakes for my hydrangeas and tomato plants and these have been performing wonderfully with all the wind storms and thunder storms that have been coming through.
