  • Battery powered lawn tools have come a long way
Size: 3-Piece Combo (2 x 2.0Ah)
Hitting my mid-30s, I became a bit of a curmudgeon when it came to yard work. I grew tired of all the noisy, unreliable, gas-powered equipment that constantly broke down. I decided to go full Luddite, swapping out my old tools for quieter, more reliable options like a 21-inch push-reel mower, a grass whip, and a long-handle scythe. These tools work great for most of my yard (though they certainly take a lot more time and effort!), which is just shy of 2 acres, but there are always those tricky spots near the vinyl siding or in tight corners that demand something more precise. That’s where the Greenworks 80V weed whacker comes in. It’s whisper quiet—quieter than my wife’s 20V and 40V weed whackers that are about 6 years old, and even quieter than my push-reel mower, which is absolutely insane that they managed to make the power tool that quiet! The battery lasts a solid 20-25 minutes of continuous (trigger down the entire time on the boost setting) use, even on thick, lush shade grass, and the same battery can power the blower afterward. Cleaning is easy, though there's a bit of a tricky spot where the guard connects to the shaft that gets grass debris wedged in there (yes I clean my tools after use, it's how you get them to last). The weed whacker is lightweight, easy to handle, and the auto-feed works well. I also use the battery-powered mower, which is well thought out and plenty powerful for typical suburban yard work (my yard is definitely not suburban and is too big for a battery mower). The grass clippings bag is easy to use and well-constructed, making clean-up simple. However, the mower is surprisingly loud—certainly not as loud as a gas mower, but louder than I expected after running the whisper-quiet weed whacker. The leaf blower, on the other hand, is surprisingly loud for a battery-powered tool and underpowered for the amount of noise it makes. It’s decent for light tasks but doesn’t quite meet my expectations in terms of power. The whacker works ok for dry grass but can't really blow other weeds around much, so it usually sits in favor of the rake or my 120v plug in blower. That said, having two batteries to swap between the weed whacker, mower, and blower is incredibly convenient, reducing downtime between tasks. Despite the blower's shortcomings, the reliability and quiet performance of the weed whacker and mower have made yard work something I actually enjoy. It’s good exercise, and the peaceful operation of these tools has turned a once-dreaded chore into a much more pleasant experience. ... show more

  • Better than my gas mower!
Size: 21" SP Mower (4.0Ah)
Easty to assemble out of the box: take all the small stuff out first (e.g., battery, charger, cardboard inserts); turn the box on the end with the rear of the mower and roll it out. I replaced a rather good gas-powered mower that gave me several years of service, but it broke down. I spent extra to get a mulch kit for it. This mower is packaged ready to mulch. The blade is "factory" sharp--no one wants to cut themselves unpacking and get blood on everything--I left it that way for the first trial. My grass was tall because my gas mower broke down, and I waited for this mower to arrive. The drive takes a little getting used to; this is not necessarily a negative in my opinion. Rear-wheel drive is a plus on hills. The transmission has its own motor--not belt-driven like my gas mower. The speed is adjustable, which is a feature you want. The drive takes a few seconds to come up to speed--no problem in my mind. When disengaged, the drive won't let you pull the mower back right away--it takes about 2 seconds to "relax." The remedy is to stop the drive NEAR the end of your run and just push it out (the mower is light enough), then you will be able to pull the mower back for the turn to the next run or pull it back. I have to emphasize that this mower is lighter than the gas-powered alternative, so mowing around bushes--where you're going back and forth--is easy enough without the drive. Then you won't have to wait to pull the mower back. It took me less than 15 minutes to figure all this out and get used to the mower. As for mulching, I soon noticed that this mower mulches much better than my gas mower with the special blade. Clipping were less than an inch long. Maybe it's because of the deck design. I'm planning to sharpen the blade before the next cut. That should improve efficiency and the quality of the cut. SIDE NOTE: I sprayed the underside of the mower with dry lubricant to aid in cleaning and protect the parts underneath. As advertised, the 4-amp battery was fully charged in a little over an hour after I had ran it out. ... show more

  • Ten Months in and still working well.
Size: 21" SP Mower (4.0Ah)
I am going to keep a running review on this Mower. So far after 10 Months it has done about 40 Mowings on my two properties and has had no issues. I don't know what people are talking about when they say the motor assist is no good going uphill. I use it on a lot of 35 deg ditch banks and it is a God send. Just press downward a bit on the handle to give the rear wheels more downward traction and up the hill she goes. The noise level is about 1/4 that of my olf Briggs Gas mower. It is silent enough that the neighbors don't care. They hear it for sure but it is not loud enough to be annoying. Several of them have come up to see it because they hear it running for so long and see how much lawn it has cut and just cannot believe that a battery mower can cut this much grass. I think a few of them are contemplating buying one as they have taken cell phone pictures of it. The mower is very heavy and the lowest speed setting for forward drive is good but any higher and it is too fast. If you have problems walking because of age this is not the mower for you. The battery runs for about 30 minutes. I have the big battery and it is really big and heavy but it gets the Job done. I will update this is anything changes. At this price I really hope that I get at least 5 years out of it. ... show more
