Description

Susan Butcher was a four-time champion of the Iditarod Trail sled dog race. Granite was her greatest lead dog, but he didn’t start that way. He was a shy, scraggly pup that the others pushed around, but Susan saw his potential. Together they worked until he became leader of the team. While they were training for the Iditarod, Granite became deathly ill. The veterinarians said he would never be strong enough to run the race. Granite refused to accept this, and slowly he started to recover. By the time of the race he was strong enough to start, but Susan wondered if he could finish the entire thousand- mile race. Confidently Granite guided the team into the lead of the race, when suddenly they were caught in a raging Arctic blizzard. Now Susan and the whole team depended on Granite to get them through the storm. He had to call on all his inner strength and courage to save them—if he could. Read more

  • Good Book
More suited for a young reader but still a good story and information. It was especially fitting as I had just visited her training facility that is now run by her husband

  • Great story & I'm happy!
I jumped for joy when I received this book. Even though, I knew it was slightly used, that worked perfectly. I had just been on a vacation to Fairbanks and saw Susan Butcher's husband demonstrate their sled dogs, so I ordered the book instead of waiting in line to have him sign one. This one had his signature in it, because the previous owners must have been to Fairbanks, too! And it was in great shape! The book arrived just a week after I returned. ... show more

  • Book
It's a bit disconcerting to receive a book with a $2.99 sticker from Goodwill it - when I just paid $23.99 for it!

  • Great book for the children
Visited Alaska and Susan Butchers place where the sled dogs are trained. Also talked to one of her daughters. Everyone knows the story of Balto and there is a statue of him in Central Park in New York but Granite has his own statue near Fairbanks and it is well deserved. My 6 year old granddaughter loved the book. ... show more

  • Great for all ages
This is a wonderful book with a heart warming story. This is a true story and explains to children and adults what the Iditarod is and how challenging a race it is. My Grandson loved it, as well as I did. The author is quite a woman and her dog magnificent.

  • Inspiring children's book
Our Grandson loved the book after we went to Alaska. What a special story to use animals to show how you can encourage, love and care for the "runt" and they become a leader. This applies also to adults or children. We all loved the book!

Story and illustrations were cute. I purchased it as a gift for my grandson when I returned from a trip to Alaska. Unfortunately, the "new" copy I received had been personalized for a child by the name of Ashley. We had to put a sticker over the name.
