I've been using foam blocks for five years with my kayak. Do they work? Yes. Are they cheaper than this? Yes. You can get by just fine with the foam blocks. However, this system is a step up from it and worth the extra money. The number one thing to focus on improving at when getting into kayaking in my opinion is getting good at car topping it and making the transportation from your garage to the lake less of a pain. It's why so many people buy one and it collects dust. Anything you can do to make car topping less of a hassle is really important. Most of that comes from technique and experience, but these also help for two reasons: 1) They're quicker to slap on your roof than the foam blocks. Not by a ton, but definitely less of a hassle. You don't have to spend time making sure they're lined up with each other and centered on your roof like you do with the foam blocks. Every little bit of reduced friction helps, these are faster and easier to get on your roof every time you use them. 2) The wider profile of these straps makes the "pivot" part when you're car topping more forgiving. Instead of having to aim for a 12'' foam block, you have a much wider area to "land" on. It's noticeably easier than foam blocks in this regard. So, while the foam blocks DO work and ARE cheaper, IMO these are worth the extra spend. The quality of materials is solid, straps are nice and thick and the friction clasps are really great. I've taken my kayak on the highway (55mph) with more flimsy hardware than this. Pleasantly surprised by the build quality. While the points above may seem like small gains in ease of use and time saved, if you add that up over five years it's not insignificant. Technique is key, but if you're on the fence between these and the foam blocks I would say 100% worth the extra cash upfront. One important note - if you are hoping this will fit a canoe like I was, these are NOT wide enough to bridge the gunnels, at least on mine. I would assume it's the same for most canoes, mine is a 15.5' Pelican Dare Devil. Attaching a pic of the width of these pads for reference - there is 31'' of padding from side to side (hard to get a pic when snugged up, but it's 31'' wide). If your canoe's gunnels are wider than that, these aren't going to work. That said, even though these don't work with my canoe, I still kept them because they are GREAT for the kayak. ... show more

This roof rack works pretty well overall. I wouldn't trust it if I had to go on the highway or for longer distances but for short distances it will do the trick. It's easy to install once you get the hang of it. Makes a good amount of noise which makes me a bit nervous but so far the kayak hasn't moved. ... show more

The roof rack was exactly as expected and was very easy to setup on my Toyota Avalon. The straps could easily be tightened down and the pads did not move around while driving. I was using this to strap down a surfboard on top of my car and the straps held throughout the entire drive. For the money, this was a great option given that I do not have a roof rack on the car, but still needed to fit large items. Next time, I may try hauling other larger items like lumber/furniture or other awkwardly large items. given how tight you can get the straps, I would only recommending driving at low speeds if you have a large item with a lot of wind resistance. I'm not sure how well this would perform on the highway My only complaint is that the instructions were a little unclear as to how to strap down things on top of the pads, but after using a couple times, it seems you can strap either around the whole car interior or to the pads themselves. ... show more

The Pros: Shipping was good. It arrived a day before it was estimated to. It works exactly as advertised. Quick to set up and use. Price is very reasonable. Easy to store until needed. The cons: It came without any instructions at all. Fortunately, it's a fairly straightforward item. When secured to the roof, the straps definitely make it an annoyance to drive with. The straps create a gap in the door's weather stripping, and this creates a lot of noise when driving. Got a Santa Fe but no racks so needed away to transport my kayak. I did some research and came upon these so glad I bought they were so easy to use. The straps tighten up really good I didn't even need the extra straps for the front and back of car. The kayak didn't move one bit. Super easy to instal and held the kayak in place. The two pieces that go under the hood to create two more anchor points is genius! I didn’t go over 60mph, but I drove over 100 miles like that, and only stopped once to tighten the straps. They weren’t that loose anyways. Worth every penny!

    • It's not worth it.
It was used once. After that, the straps would hold place causing the kayak to become lose and move while traveling. Ruined a great day for kayaking. Don't but it. The performance is sub-par.
