  • Excellent VPN router
Color: SF1200
This is and excellent router for vpn. Nothing fancy but great performance. This is a home router, AC plug in. But for about $4 more you can get the SPF1200 which is newer product but it is has the extra benefit it is for smaller for travel. You can plug it into you smart phone and configure it as a network mode, a Hot spot or just a regular router for the family in a hotel. It is also an excellent router for small home use. It has the new firmware Version 4.x with has a far better GUI with NordVPN baked rignt it so the firmware it is so easy to update your vpn servers. Since 2013 I have been a user of Nordvpn. Have tried all of the other VPN providers but still NordVPN is the best performance, best support, best price, you get 6 simultaneous seats for your subscription. This router is still uses the Version 3.x firmware so vpn configuring is not as easy for a none techy but I talked to the company and they are soon going to upgrade firmware to Version 4.X so it wil also have NordVpn baked in so loading you vpn will be super easy, no need for a techy background just a good knowledge of computer skils. When this routers gets the Verison 4.X upgrade will be a super router at such a reasionable price for a home router. It has 4 Gig ports on the back. One for WAN and 3 LAN, but if yoiu want the WAN port an be reassigned as a 4th thing LAN port but then how would uou kook up your internet modem. Power source is just ordinary USB. For a few dollar more the Flint (GL-AX1800) has a much faster processor, faster process, fast thru-put, and 5 Gig port plus it is Wifi 6 for a serious plugin home router. Far superior home router. Very well worth the few extra dollars for such new technology, especially if you buy on Amazon, they have the best prices, plus deals and best service around. ... show more

  • Does not work with Azulle Quantum PC-Stick (Win10) and has minor ocasional 5G hickups
Color: SF1200
I wanted an OpenWRT (LuCi) router as an upgrade to my Motorola Smart AC1900 because I need to configure a more sophisticated Guest LAN. I started with the lower-end GL.iNet routers. At 50ft radius, this router is over 15% slower than the Motorola Smart AC1900 and can only connect with the Azulle Quantum PC-Stick (HDMI Win10 attached to TV) with 2.5Mb download data rate and yet it supported 6Mb upload (my maximum cable upload speed). Upgrading to the latest GL.iNet firmware did not fix the PC-Stick connection problem. Also the 5G WiFi randomly drops out about 4 times a day and 5G clients need to reconnect to 5G or fail-over to 2.4G. For me this was not a showstopper because the 5G is re-established very quickly and most clients seamlessly reconnect automatically. The only side-effect I've noticed is a brief momentary jitter of streaming video and WiFi Calling (I don't know how this dropout affects gaming apps). Recommendation: I returned it and eventually got a GL.iNet GL-B1300 (Convexa-B) instead because it matched the Motorola Smart AC1900 download speed and signal strength and it can connect to the Azulle Quantum PC-Stick at 30Mb download. It seems the GL-B1300's Qualcomm Atheros IPQ4028 SoC WiFi chipset works very well. Even though it only has internal antennas, its WiFi signal strength and coverage is even better than the GL.iNet GL-SF1200 which has four external antennas and because it is a mesh router the WiFi coverage can be seamlessly expanded by adding subordinate routers. Except for lack of USB-C power, it has all of the features of the "pocket routers". However it too randomly drops out 5G WiFi a couple of times a day but it is very quickly re-established. Details: I have tried the following five GL.iNet routers and only the GL.iNet GL-B1300 (Convexa-B) was able to provide general 2.4G and 5G WiFi bandwidth comparable to my old Motorola Smart AC1900 router within a radius of 50ft (even after GL.iNet firmware updates). All of the other routers were almost 15% slower. GL.iNet GL-SF1200 (4 antennas) GL.iNet GL-SFT1200 (Opal) GL.iNet GL-MT1300 (Beryl) GL.iNet GL-A1300 (Slate Plus) GL.iNet GL-B1300 (Convexa-B) **** GOOD **** A particular showstopper problem was that none but the GL.iNet GL-B1300 (Convexa-B) could properly connect with the Azulle Quantum PC-Stick (Win10 HDMI attached to my TV) with an acceptable download data rate. All of the other routers could only connect to the Azulle Quantum PC-Stick with 2.5Mb maximum download data rate and yet they all supported 6Mb upload (my maximum cable upload speed). The GL-B1300 was the only one that could match the same PC-Stick 30Mb download data rate as my old Motorola Smart AC1900 router. ... show more

  • Works mostly great, but it does drop some packets.
Color: SF1200
I picked up one of these routers for a specific purpose of setting up a segment on my network for full-time VPN, to get around blackouts for MLB ballgames. And to that end, it works as advertised. OpenVPN setup is a dream compared to manually setting up your VPN client. The only issue I'm having is that in testing as well as practice, its connectivity to the network (internal and Internet) drops here and there for a moment. When you're actively using it for video feeds, that means the feed drops as well. Still, I am hopeful that perhaps a tweak here or a patch there will fix the issue. So that explains one star dinged. The other is for the strangely responsive yet totally unhelpful support. Then again, maybe my next exchange with them will be a bit more helpful, so I will revisit this review with an open mind and a willingness to give credit where it's due. But for now, I think this thing has a lot of promise, especially for the price. ... show more

  • Great entry level router
Color: SF1200
This is a great little router but it obviously has its limits. One big limit is the throughput you can expect via Wireguard. Unfortunately, it seems the CPU in this thing can only handle up to 50Mbps of throughput when using Wireguard. However, I will admit it works flawlessly and I will be purchasing a more powerful Gl router for faster throughput. ... show more

  • Blocks verizon wifi calling
Color: SF1200
I bought this because it has vpn. Bonus is their proprietary software allow you to make a private vpn tunnel between 2 routers, so I bought 2. First time I took it on international trip. I connect my amazon echo dot and found out that akexa doesn't work with vpn. Then I found out I am not able to get wifi calling when connected to the router in the hotel. But as soon as I get on the hotel wifi, my wifi calling works again. So I am quite disappointed so far. ... show more
