I am a 63 year old male. I used to play with an onix Z5 and loved it, but I found that the Gamma Shard was much better at the net. The paddle feels softer but doesn’t seem to give up power. First let me say, I was not paid to give this review and rarely give reviews on Amazon or any other site. That being said, this is an excellent paddle. Gamma did it right this time. Very similar to the characteristics of the Gamma Compass, the 505 design is soft enough to bring your dinking game to another level but has enough "pop" for those baseline drives. The composition and design are great; the graphics are nice and not too over-bearing. The extended handle allows a two-handed backhand with ease. I normally use an 8 oz. paddle. The 505 weighed in at 7.6 oz. when I received it. I put lead tape at the top and sides of the paddle and added an overgrip. The additions added .3 grams for just the right swing weight. I gave this paddle a "5" and would buy another. Good Job Gamma!! ... show more

    • Expensive ... But Makes A Difference!

Overall, I am very happy with this paddle. It is extremely light weight. The shorter handle forces me to grip the handle in the correct place. The square shape of the handle gives me a better grip, especially when the paddle is hit by the ball with a great deal of force (the paddle does not turn in my hand). The extra length of the paddle head makes a difference when reaching for the ball. Serving and returning a ball can be done with very little effort as the paddle is very responsive. The first day I used the paddle I was taken off guard at how, when hitting the ball, it would spin wildly out of control. However, once I got use to the touch needed (less force), I have been pleasantly surprised by the improvement in my game. As a casual player, I find $150 to be a bit pricey, but if you are serious about playing pickleball a lot in the future, it will be worth your investment. Went from an Onix Z5 to this paddle, which game me over an inch in reach. Yes narrower, but I am reaching more balls than before. This was important to me as I am 65 and can't jump or move like I used to. Paddle is light and has more zip to it. Was hitting long the first couple of days. I now hit harder and can reach more balls. My game definitely got better and I am more competitive than before. ... show more

I have used the Gamma Shard paddle for 8 months before buying this one. It was my first Good paddle and it really seamed made for me. Some women thought that it was to heavy. Not the Hellbender. It feels much lighter than the specs show. I am a 57 year old female recreational player in the 3.0 range. I love the Shard, I saw a male friend with the Hellbender, I liked it after a quick demo. I ordered it because it was on sale at a much lower price. Now after using it for a week, I Love It! It's really a Gamma Shard but on a diet. They cut down the corners at the handle a lot, which is an area which you don't usually hit with. Also a little off of the top corners. It looks longer, but is only about 1/8 inch longer. Same handle, core and surface as the Shard. What I like most is that I can move it noticeably quicker. Especially on power serves which means faster balls. This is from the reduction of surface area based on the shape. This is a quieter sounding paddle. I do not like loud paddles. Soft for Dinking with the honeycomb core and great for attack shots with the graphite surface. Good textured surface for those that really put spin on the ball. ... show more
