  • Great album, cheap cover
The album itself is amazing, duh..it's James blake. Definately my favorite album of his so far. The sound quality of the vinyl is great. The album also came with a little poster inside which I thought was a very nice touch ( it is a glossy photo copy of the album cover about the size of the album ). HOWEVER, I gave 4 stars because the album cover or sleave or whatever its called... is very thin and cheap feeling, almost feels like construction paper. I was not rough with it and it tore the first day I got it. I don't even know when it happened but it is what it is. Overall, I say buy it. Just be careful ! ... show more

  • 5th studio album offers no new ideas
When we last heard from James Blake, it was January, 2019 when he release his 4th studio album "Assume Form", which was not bad but neither was is truly outstanding or remarkable. Now almost 3 years later, James Blake returns with his 5th studio album. "Friends That Break Your Heart" (12 tracks; 44 min.) opens with "Famous Last Words", a dreamy tune that is among the better tracks on here. "Life Is Not The Same" sounds vintage James Blake. We then get the first of several tracks where Blake enlists support from other musicians. "Coming Back" features SZA on vocals. "Frozen" features JID and SwaVay on vocals. Are you sensing a trend here? Finally, later on, we get "Show Me", featuring Monica Martin in vocals. With all due respect to the guest artists, who are obviously talented in their own right, but these songs don't do much for me in the context of a James Blake album. Blake's collaborations with rappers have rapidly grown in the last 3-4 years (remember his collaborations in 2018 on the "Black Panther" soundtrack), and it hasn't grown on me (but that is obviously a very subjective assessment). Deep into the album we get "Say What You Will", a bland tune that is a curious choice to be the album's lead radio single (not that Blake gets a lot of radio coverage). Thankfully the title track is another few of the truly standout tracks here, with a heavy chorus ("I have haunted many photographs/In the background, in the fore/And as many loves have crossed my path/In the end, it was friends that break your heart"). Wow. But when all is said and done, I can't help but feel disappointed with this album. Is it 'bad' album? Of course not. But neither is the album the near-perfection of his self-titled debut album and the "The Colour In Anything" album nor the outright perfection that was the "Overgrown" album. You haven't had the full James Blake experience if you haven't seen him live in concert. I had the pleasure of seeing him at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC in 2013 on the Overgrown Tour, and it was for me one of the more memorable concert experience over the last decade, period. Playing with a full band the songs sounded like they were on steroids (in the best possible way). Even though I'm not blown away by the "Friends That Break Your Heart" album, I would not hesitate seeing James Blake in concert again if and when I get the chance again. ... show more

  • Phenomenal Listening Experience (Lyrically, Sonically, Emotionally)
I had high expectations leading up to this album, and James did not disappoint. Already have it on repeat. Cheers, JB.
