  • Wonderful method book
Ms. Zeltsman really did an amazing job with this new method for marimba playing. She manages to avoid the flaws of the L. H. Stevens "Method of Movement" by using musical examples to develop technique rather than technique for it's own sake, a concept that has never worked well for mallet percussionists. This book describes the traditional 4-mallet grip better than any others I've come to. The deficiencies of previous descriptions is likely why so few university students in America use the traditional grip. Many just assume it's an inferior grip, and then are wowed when they see one of the many top notch marimba performers who have mastered it's nuances. (This grip is taught much more in Japan and Europe than it is here in the States) One of my favorite aspects of this books is her thorough description of phrasing and other musical facets of marimba playing that have been completely ignored in other books. Though I certainly disagree with some of her assertions, I can't disagree with her success and the success of her students coming out of Boston Conservatory. I think this may become the primary marimba method book into the 21st century. ... show more

  • Four (4) Mallets vs Two (2) mallets
In order to understand the control of four (4) mallets you need to read and understand the principle behind the holding and striking the keys as directed by the author in this book.

  • Great Book!
I am a new marimba student and am finding Ms. Zeltsman's book beyond excellent. She very thoroughly discusses different techniques and shares her personal preferences with insight as to why. I'm just scratching the surface of this wonderful instrument and with Ms. Zeltsman's help I'm loving my practice time more and more. I highly recommend this very instructional book which is very easy to understand. ... show more
