Top Amazon Reviews

  • Terrific set of headphones, rich, clear, great detail. The cable is disappointing
I bought these Focal headphones "open box, full warranty" from Audio Advisor via Amazon for $699. I've done biz with Audio Advisor via Amazon in the past and they are very reliable, stand-up operation. The Focals arrived in pristine condition and very much "like new". The build quality is exquisite, the carry case is reasonable, but the cable is a bit irritating to me because it's too short (4 foot) and very stiff. I’m also not a fan of screw on 1/4 (6.3mm) TRS adapters because they introduce a potential connection flaw. That cable thing may not be an issue for other buyers out there who use a desktop amp but for me it's annoying to use with a recliner. Not enough to knock off a point but 1/2 a point for sure. Audio reviews, even when written by an experienced audiophile reviewers or skilled musicians are, by their very nature, variable. That variability can increase exponentially when done by inexperienced reviewers running the Focal headphones off a laptop or cellphone with no external DAC and using that as their audio judgement bar. I’ve been an audio nut for 50 years and still learn more every day. It’s a subjective and pricey hobby. The Focal Celestee’s benefit greatly from a dedicate external headphone amp and i would not evaluate these without a dedicated headphone amp and DAC I use a Rupert Neve RNHP amp with a Bluesound Node and a McIntosh MVP-861 CD player as my sources. I stream Tidal MQA (master quality audio which is a terrific source through the DAC in the Node. It’s not a super high end set up, but I’m a believer in diminishing returns as prices escalate dramatically. I’d put the Neve amp up against a litany of $3000 headphone amps and it would stand proud. Bottom line is that I'm not using a laptop as my source, and I can hear details in familiar music that I've never heard before using these Focal headphones. I'm getting definition, clarity, background percussion, and soundstage like never before. My other headphones are Meze 99 Classic and Sony Bluetooth/wired WH-1000XM5 phones. Both of those are terrific headphones for the money but are not on par with the Focal Celestee. The Meze and Sony models add color and warmth to the audio and the Focal sound more accurate to me. You have to listen for yourself and check out the headphone reviews from the master headphone audiophile, John Darko. $999 is too much for the Celestee's. I was OK with $699. Hope that helps! ... show more

  • Best Closed-back Headphone In My Disposal
Like high quality sound and details resolution. Excellent craftsmanship and design. Definitely requires at least 100 hours burn-in time and phone amplifier. Perfect match with iFi iDSD Mini Signature and Gryphone. I mostly use opened-back planars, so it’s my first experience with find closed-back. Don’t expect the same sound stage as in planars but otherwise it’s brilliant piece of audio equipment ... show more

  • Comfortable, good (not great) sound, but lacking as engaging a presentation I'd expect for $990
Sources: 1a) Sony SACD player through Burson Conductor 3 Reference headphone amp, 1b) Amazon Prime streaming through Burson Conductor 3 Reference DAC/ headphone amp, 2a) SACD player through Feliks Audio Espressivo Mk II headphone amp, 2b) Amazon Prime through Burson C3R DAC to Feliks Audio Espressivo Mk II headphone amp. First of all, these are VERY comfortable headphones. If comfort is your thing, give these a try. Secondly, the overall sound is fairly balanced, clear and strong. I think the bass is just a little lacking. Compared to the similarly priced, closed back Beyerdynamic T5 cans, the Focal Celestee has a more balanced presentation due to the T5's bloated and muddy bass (which also detracts from / gets in the way of its presentation of the mids and highs). The overall presentation of the Focal was fairly balanced, but a little "nasal" in comparison to the T5. The T5 had a wider soundstage presentation, thus sounding more open compared to the Focal. Comparing this Focal to the open backed Focal Clear Pro, the Clear Pro sounds more... open, with more presence in the bass area - complementing the excellent mids and highs (without being overblown like the T5) - but that is to be expected comparing open back to closed back designs. I like the Clear Pro very much and, despite having a similar sound signature, the relatively nasal (pinched, closed in) quality of the Celestee is a buzz kill for me. But what is, perhaps, most troubling for me is that I have the now discontinued Oppo PM-3 closed back cans (these employ planar magnetic tech, which none of the other cans mentioned here do) and they sound 95% as good as the Focal Celestee, losing 5% in overall refinement of the musical presentation. The Oppo has a touch more bottom end, which I feel the Celestee is lacking, and a touch wider, more open soundstage. AND THE OPPO CANS COST LESS THAN HALF THE PRICE OF THE CELESTEE. That is a deal breaker for me. If I didn't have the Oppo cans, though, I might have kept the Celestee. I am sending the Celestee cans back, continuing on my fool's journey to find the perfect closed back cans. Perfect, and something I can afford, that is. Thank you for your attention. Addendum: A month after writing this review, and after auditioning five more great $1000-$2000 closed back headphones, I settled on the Denon AH-D9200. ... show more
