  • Awesome for the price
As a girl with long hair, this is a godsend. My bathtub doesn't have a drain catch like most do, and I can't take the plug out of my sink to clean out what finds its way down there. I live in an older apartment where I'm not supposed to use things like draino (plus, in my experience it's really hit or miss). Now, I could have maintenance come and deal with it, but a) I like fixing things myself; b) I'm one of those weird people who wants to make sure their place is spotless before anyone enters. Plus, doing it myself means I don't have to wait on someone to come fix it. It's pretty idiot-proof to get going, you just carefully slide it in, wiggle it around and fish out the clog. It takes a little getting used to, especially if the piping turns a sharp angle, but with enough poking it works quite well. Apparently the previous tenant had a piece of plastic go into the pipe which of course created the perfect seed to capture my long locks... I was amazed at the size of the hairball I pulled out. My only complaint (which would warrant only a half-star removal) is that it's kind of hard to clean all the gunk off of. However, given my arbitrary cost-benefit analysis, it's an ok compromise. I just keep it tucked away in a little baggie. I could also see it becoming a pain to flex in the right direction over time (think how you can't perfectly re-straighten a paperclip after bending it every which way), but hopefully I won't have to use it super often. ... show more

  • Works Perfectly If You Use It Properly
After reading both the positive and negative reviews about this product, I decided to spend the seven bucks and give it a shot. My showers were rapidly turning into unwanted baths, and after five minutes I'd be standing in ankle-deep water. I'd tried Liquid Plumr and Drano, and they seemed to help a bit, but I couldn't find anything that would clear the drain completely. After receiving the FlexiSnake, I was dubious. It is essentially a piece of flexible wire wrapped in hook velcro. It feels pretty flimsy, and I was worried that I'd made a bad purchase. I gave it a shot anyway, and fed it down the drain of the tub. I was amazed at what it pulled out! Gobs of hair from what was probably years ago, over and over again. I kept inserting it until just a little past when it stopped, and kept pulling out more and more gunk. When all was said and done, I had a clean, free flowing drain. A couple suggestions/notes: - If you have the ability to remove the drain cap to make the drain opening as unobstructed as possible, do it. This will make the job a lot less time consuming. - The FlexiSnake was only about 14" inches long. If the obstruction is deep inside the drain, you'd be better off disassembling the pipe at the J-Bend and getting at the clog from there. - I've used this on four separate occasions, and have had success with it each time. Clean it after each use by pulling off the hair from the FlexiSnake and rinse it under hot water. I see no reason that this can't be used over and over again, with proper cleaning. Again, it's just like hook velcro, so cleaning it is just like pulling stray hairs from that, just on a larger (and ickier) scale. I had no problem cleaning it after each use, so I'm not quite sure why other reviewers had such trouble. - You could certainly buy a professional drain auger for at least three times the price, and it would get the job done as well. However, if you don't know what you're doing with that, you have the potential to damage the bathroom fixtures or pipes. A hard metal snake can easily scratch and ding drain rings and sinks. An easy 5 star rating for me. ... show more

  • Extremely Effective, Difficult to Clean
This product blew away my expectations for its effectiveness. I live in a small, old apartment and our sink was running very, very slow for months. We tried using some heavy duty Drano a few weeks ago. Drano was actually more expensive and more of a hassle as you have to wait to use the sink again for an hour or so. Furthermore, it was not very effective, the sink was slightly faster but if you left the water running for any reasonable amount of time the sink would start to fill. I purchased the Flexisnake Drain Millipede and used it immediately. I only had to put it down the drain once, spin it a few times, and pull it back out. What I found was impressive and disgusting. I wish I had taken a photo. The millipede was completely covered in black hair and sink gunk from bottom to top. The drain immediately ran perfectly. I can run water continuously while I take my time shaving (5 minutes) without the sink filling. The biggest drawback was the difficulty of cleaning the millipede. The instructions state that you should use an old toothbrush to clean it. I attempted this and made very little progress. While the big chunks were removed easily, the entire thing is still covered in dark hair and debris that is trapped by the velcro-like surface. Without picking away each piece with fingernails or something it is simply not going to come off. Despite this, once I had cleaned the product as much as I could, I used it on my shower, which also runs slow. It seemed less effective on my shower at first, I think because the shape of the drain made it much more difficult to push the entire FlexiSnake into the drain. However, when I cleaned up and took a shower the next morning the clog had cleared! No water filling the shower up to my feet. I will update on whether or not the drain stays unclogged (I also installed the Danco 9D00010306 Microban Hair Catcher, available on Amazon) to prevent future clogs. ... show more
