  • Every family in multi-story houses or apartments should have one
Living in a two story house, it was important to me to make sure we have one of these in the event we should have a fire and are unable to use the staircase to get downstairs to escape. The main reason I chose this ladder is because it is not a one use ladder. It can be deployed multiple times for family drills to practice using and then repacked. Be sure to check the ladder thoroughly after each practice drill to make sure there is no damage or changes to the integrity of the ladder. The window hooks are wide enough to fit the window sills in our home (it was built in the 1930s) and are very secure. Climbing out a window and down a ladder hanging against the side of your house is not the easiest thing to do by a long shot. It's hard even when you have all the time in the world to practice, so it's important to make sure every family member is comfortable and confident in their ability to open the window, pop out the screen (if there is one), attach the ladder, climb over the sill, and climb down the ladder. As someone who is nowhere near as nimble as I'd like, knowing how to properly use this ladder and the safest and easiest way to use it to exit a deadly situation is important. When ordering a fire escape ladder, make sure you buy one that is long enough for your needs, can hold enough weight so that adults can help children down if necessary, is reusable, and is easy to use. This one by First Alert fit those criteria for us. ... show more

  • very sturdy for a rope ladder!
This thing looks very well built and very sturdy - for a rope ladder. It can be a little scary climbing out a second story window on something that's clipped to the window sill, but I did it practicing and it's very easy and comfortable to climb down this thing. The steps have little legs that keep it away from the wall (don't forget you need a second story window without a first story window below it!) and the legs keep the steps just where you need them. The steps are steel with non-slip coating - very sturdy, they don't flex at all with my 180# on them. Definitely would recommend all who may use this try it out before you need it! It does fold up easily into a small space. We keep ours right below the window on the floor. Good security when you live on a cliff that's crumbling into the sea! ... show more

  • great ladder to hop the wall
I had to order a ladder so my daughter could use it to climb over the wall since the HOA cites her for parking in the visitor parking. She has to park outside of the gate (very ridiculous but so are HOAs). Ordered the ladder, it's SUPER sturdy, I had to cut more of the ladder down, so she uses about 5 feet, not the full 14 feet, however, the leftover was used to adhere to the inside of the wall and works like a charm. She can now come and go using the ladder to pop over the brick wall at ease. Best purchase ever! ... show more

  • Does the job
I bought this for my daughter who just moved into a second story apartment which is accessed through long hallways. I am a firefighter and know just how quickly hallways can be filled with choking, toxic smoke. I like the ladder's construction and quality and found it easy to deploy out of the window. The problem that I found with it was that the exterior of the building has a brick fascia which makes the wall nearly a foot thick and the portion of the hanging bracket that contacts the exterior wall, rests on top of the brick's horizontal surface instead of pressing against the vertical surface below the window. I think it will still function this way, but may not be quite as stable. Ideally an adjustable window bracket would make this a great value. ... show more

  • Get one
If you live in a two-story house or apatment, I stringly suggest you get one of these. I used to always think to myself that I would just jump out the window/balcony in case of a fire, and hopefully land in a soft area. I even considered shimmying down the side of the house, on the lower roof, to my car's hood. Sure, these are practical ideas that won't cost you $50 or more BUT, everything changes when it stops being just you. You're not going to throw your kid or pet down so, get a ladder. It's easy to use and worth the money. You might think to yourself "well I'm careful and don't leave the stove on or candles on" but the truth is, you never know when there could be an electrical fire or when one of your neighbor's houses might catch and spread. I strongly recommend this product for your safety and safety of your family. ... show more

  • High-Quality, Solid Construction, Must Have
This escape ladder has a nice emergency release strap which also doubles as a "tie" to hold all the rungs in place while storing so it can be quickly and easily moved and put into the window in an emergency. Haven't had to use mine yet, but it feels very solid and is of a high quality construction, but isn't too heavy. I checked it out thoroughly and simulated using it so I would know how if the time came. Just having this in my second story rooms makes me feel safer. This is the third one I have purchased so each room has one, compact box fits under the bed in one room and behind a chair by the window in the other room. If you have a 2-story place, make sure to have at least one of these upstairs in case you ever need it. TIP: If Fire, close bedroom door before opening your window so the influx of oxygen doesn't pull fire into the room. ... show more

  • Peace of mind you hope to never use
Let's face it, you hope this product never gets used. Our house is built into a hillside, with the front 12 to 16 feet above grade. If we can't get out of the house in an emergency, we have the option to throw this ladder over the window and escape on the high side. The unit is well made, sturdy, and in a test run it worked very well. It comes in a nice cardboard box to store under the bed. Hope we never need it, but the peace of mind knowing it is there, is worth every penny we paid. ... show more

  • I feel much safer!
Jumping out the second story of a burning house really didn't appeal to me. This was an excellent and reasonably priced solution. This was the sturdiest of the roll-out ladders I found and it is not too heavy for me to use. It's small enough to fit in a cabinet or closet near the window where I'll use it and it's easy to install, use and refold. I also like that it's long enough to reach near the ground. I plan to get at least one more for the other side of the house. ... show more
