OPRAH’S BOOK CLUB PICK • A HARPERS BAZAAR BEST BOOK OF 2022 • A PARADE MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK • A MARIE CLAIRE MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK“It’s clear from the first page that Davis is going to serve a more intimate, unpolished account than is typical of the average (often ghost-written) celebrity memoir; Finding Me reads like Davis is sitting you down for a one-on-one conversation about her life, warts and all.”—USA Today“[A] fulfilling narrative of struggle and success….Her gorgeous storytelling will inspire anyone wishing to shed old labels.”—Los Angeles Times In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever. This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.As I wrote Finding Me, my eyes were open to the truth of how our stories are often not given close examination. We are forced to reinvent them to fit into a crazy, competitive, judgmental world. So I wrote this for anyone running through life untethered, desperate and clawing their way through murky memories, trying to get to some form of self-love. For anyone who needs reminding that a life worth living can only be born from radical honesty and the courage to shed facades and be . . . you.Finding Me is a deep reflection, a promise, and a love letter of sorts to self. My hope is that my story will inspire you to light up your own life with creative expression and rediscover who you were before the world put a label on you. Read more

  • Finding me: A Memoir
Viola Davis: Finding Me is an intimate and powerful memoir that takes readers on a journey through the life of one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed actresses. In this raw and unflinching account, Davis explores her humble beginnings in Rhode Island, her struggles with poverty, racism, and self-worth, and her rise to stardom, all while confronting the complexities of identity and belonging. What stands out in Davis' narrative is her vulnerability and authenticity—she doesn't shy away from the pain of her past, including childhood trauma and discrimination. Her reflections on being one of the few Black women in mainstream Hollywood offer valuable insight into both the personal and systemic barriers she faced. Davis' voice is compelling and inspiring, making her triumphs feel all the more significant. Finding Me is not just the story of an actress; it’s a testament to resilience, self-acceptance, and the pursuit of truth. ... show more

  • 5 stars is not enough...
If I called myself a fan of Viola Davis before, I can definitively say that I'm even more enthralled with her now. Finding Me was a heartbreaking, inspiring, and deeply meaningful glimpse into the life of this highly acclaimed actress. As if her written words on the page were not compelling enough, she narrates the audiobook version as well, and I was hooked. I typically listen to audiobooks in the car and switch to the physical version when I am home and able to read, but I found myself completely drawn in by her laid back and familiar tone while telling about the situations in her life that shaped her into the vibrant and resilient person that she is today. Growing up in Central Falls, Rhode Island, Viola's family was extremely poor. She details a childhood that would leave the average person in tears at the trials she had to endure at such a young age. And while she never loses sight of who she is and where she came from, the fact that she looks back at everything that happened to her and is able to find joy in it is a testament to her strength and character. Her capacity for love and forgiveness is unmatched, and I was thoroughly moved by her courage and tenacity. This memoir reached into the depths of my soul and made me burn with empathy. It was unapologetically honest, and raw, and real. Her musings were both entertaining and intelligent, and they encourage the reader to reflect on their own feelings regarding life's purpose and their self worth. In a world where it is so easy to become hung up on the past and allow old trauma to create scars in your future, Viola's story shows the endless possibilities of what can happen when you take control of your own destiny and become the author of your story. "Memories are immortal. They're deathless and precise. They have the power of giving you joy and perspective in hard times. Or, they can strangle you. Define you in a way that's based more in other people's tucked-up perceptions than truth." ... show more

  • Healing Energy
Viola Davis's memoir, Finding Me, is a captivating and deeply personal journey that explores her life with raw honesty and vulnerability. One of the most powerful aspects of the book is how Davis reflects on the duality of her existence—how the 8-year-old girl who survived the harsh realities of poverty and discrimination made it to where she is today, but still feels like the 50-something version of herself has some unfinished business. It's a theme that resonates throughout the narrative, as Davis shares how her childhood shaped her, while acknowledging that her adult self is still in the process of fully "finding" her peace and confidence. What I particularly enjoyed was how Davis beautifully balances triumph with struggle. Her recounting of her childhood in Rhode Island, the hardships she faced, and the painful realization that she wasn’t just fighting for success but also for her own sense of worth is compelling. Yet, it’s not just a story of overcoming—she also digs deep into her ongoing journey of self-acceptance, learning that even after achieving monumental success, the work of healing and growing is never truly finished. Her reflections on race, identity, and the complexities of fame are both thought-provoking and relatable. What makes Finding Me so engaging is the way Davis invites readers into her psyche—not as a distant icon, but as a real, flawed person who is still learning to embrace her full self. It’s incredibly moving to see how she unpacks her achievements and challenges, revealing that even with all the accolades, there is always more to discover about who we are and who we are meant to become. Viola Davis’s vulnerability, candor, and strength in Finding Me make it an essential read. It’s not just a memoir; it’s a testament to the idea that personal growth is a lifelong process, and no matter where you come from or what you’ve accomplished, there’s always more work to be done. This book will inspire readers to look inward and continue their own journey of self-discovery. ... show more
