  • Geat replacement for cheap imported hand pumps on gas caddies
Pattern Name: Pump Style: 8 GPM Pump Only
I have a 35 gallon fuel caddy that I use to move fuel from the FBO's pump to my hangar. It avoids having to shut down and restart my plane and saves wear and tear on the engine and starter. However the pump on the fuel caddy was cheap, not long for this world in terms of durability, and too slow to connect to a fuel meter. The RD8 pump is just about perfect for a fuel caddy, as it's light enough to mount on the existing outlet pipe while allowing 1" or 3/4" accessories like a fuel filter and meter with a 3/4" hose and fill nozzle. The ability to swap the inlet and outlet fittings through 90 degrees makes it very easy to get a logical arrangement of accessories. The pump runs well and doesn't draw much electricity. It has a 15 amp fuse but I suspect it only draws about half that amount. It has no issues pumping fuel through a 10 micron filter and fuel meter and then up and over to the wing tanks on my plane. I did make a change in the power cord. Since I have a deep cycle 12 volt RV battery in the rear of the hangar to operate a winch for the aircraft, I used 14-3 exterior cable to make up a 40' power cord, and used 30 amp Anderson Connectors to connect to the provided (short) power cord. I reused the green alligator clip to a tie down in the hangar. The short power cord loops conveniently over the carry handle, so it's there if I need another 10' of length, and not in the way if I don't. I also attached a grounding cable to the pump that attaches to the aircraft to ensure it's grounded to the tank and pump. The major downside of the imported fuel caddies is the 31.5 - 32 mm fine, straight threads on the outlet, which is compatible with basically nothing in the US. However I took a standard 1 1/4" NPT female to 3/4" NPT female adapter and turned it in my lathe to get a friction fit (1.425") on the gas caddy's outlet. Since it had fuel in it, I opted for JB Weld to attach the adapter, since JB Weld is fuel proof, rather than soldering or brazing. However, since JB Weld is also an insulator I ensured the ground wire contacts both the pump and a cleaned bare metal spot on the outlet pipe itself. Since the pictures above were taken I've added a 90 degree elbow after the fuel meter so that the hose routes straight down and doesn't stay bent. ... show more

  • Works like a champ
Pattern Name: Pump Style: 8 GPM Pump Only
Pump works as it should, just added hose and nozzle and was good to go. Only downside is length of power cord, it should be another 3' longer. I have used it to pump out heating oil from old tank but currently use it to pump gas from storage barrels to equipment in need. Won't go back to a hand pump again. Not that I'm lazy but this is so easy! ... show more

  • So far so good. Here's my experience.
Pattern Name: Pump Style: 10 GPM Pump Only
Just transferred about 400 gal diesel with it. Put two Goldenrod filters on the suction side (one 80 mesh filter + one 17 micron water block filter). For 250 gal of that, it also pushed through 3 additional Goldenrod filters (one 80 mesh filter + one 17 micron water block filter + 10 micron filter). Got a video of this. The 250 gal also pumped up about 6-8' to the top of a gravity fed tank. I also pumped about 150 gal from drums to a tank which was not elevated. I noticed that it got significantly warmer when pumping uphill, but it did fine. One thing I didn't like was the duty cycle specified in the manual. It just says "30 minutes" which is meaningless. A duty cycle is usually either a percentage, or a max run time with how much time to let it rest. So I just ran it 10 minutes and let it rest for 5 min. No way I would use the cheap plastic fittings that come with it. I also don't like the flimsy red plastic housing. I put a big zip tie around it to stabilize the handle and it was much more confidence inspiring. The power cables aren't very long, so I just used jump start cables to extend them. The power cable stress relief grommet thingy came out of the housing. Gotta figure out how to put it back in. It looks almost exactly like the cheaper China clones, but I spent a little extra to get a Fill-Rite hoping that the guts are better quality. But it did fine. Had zero problems with it. The flow rate was similar to what you get at the gas station. Maybe a little more. But the reason I got a 10 gpm is because I used to have a 20 GPM and it was WAY too fast. Couldnt really fill a 5 gal can without making a mess. Filling the tractor was too fast too. 10 GPM is much more controllable. Hoping it lasts a long time. Hope this review helps someone. ... show more

  • Easy
Pattern Name: Pump Style: 10 GPM Pump Only
This unit works perfect. Unfortunately it did not come with a filter but the manufacturer sent one when I called. It is easy to use and runs off my tractor battery. It is exactly what I wanted.

  • Monopoly company is producing monopoly products.
Pattern Name: Pump Style: 8 GPM Suction Hose
Fill-rite has pretty much dominated the fuel transfer pump market, you go anywhere and this is the only brand you're going to find 99% of the time. They know they don't have any competition and their parts are being sourced from China from the scabbiest backwater factories imaginable to be assembled here and resold at the highest markup the market will bear. The fit and finish is abominable, the cast iron is closer to pot metal and I've had so many of these pumps fail on me over the years after only a few hours of use that if there was literally any other acceptable alternative I'd never buy one again. Every time I buy a fill-rite pump I can't help but feel I'm being suckered into throwing hundreds of dollars away for the privilege of having to gut it for a repair 3 months later. Don't even get me started on the Made by Mattell nozzles that come with these things. Makes my skin crawl just touching them. ... show more
