I can't understand why some people are saying that this unit is not detailed I am listening through a pair of dynamic T1's 1st edition which are 600 ohms but are of high efficiency and yes you can't crack them up to ear bleeding levels but the amount of detail that these headphones can extract from this unit is euphoric. Make no mistake if you have a high line of headphones and a good music source of lossless audio you will be rewarded in spades. the last unit I had which I believe was the e9 did handle 600 ohm headphones but had nowhere near the detail of these. I wish this did also but to get a lot of fine detail you do not want to turn the volume up too loud anyway you will hear things off in the distance and around the back of your head even under your jaw. this is what you get when you spend good money on headphones. they're not going to turn a pair of $200 headphones into a set of $10,000 speakers and that's what my T1s sound like through this unit.. and yes I own $10,000 speakers ... show more

    • Excellent DAC with some caveats

I have owned a number of FiiO products over the years including DAP's, headphone amplifiers and IEM's. For the most part they have worked well, but with some quirks. This one is no exception. First of all, why do you need this device? It is a DAC and a headphone amplifier combined. Its primary purpose is to decode Hi-Res digital audio and provide a very powerful headphone amp. If you are listening to FLAC or other lossless formats, this is an excellent choice. Other other hand it is a waste if you listen to MP3's or AAC's and other lossy formats. The K5 Pro needs a digital stream to use the DAC. This can be from USB, optical or coaxial inputs. If your music is on your computer you will most likely use the USB input. Macs also have optical outputs recessed into their headphone jacks - more about this later. Last, you can use the coaxial input (SPDIF). FiiO's music players all have coaxial outputs and this works well too. I am using a FiiO X5 Mkiii DAP and the coaxial output. This works extremely well. The K5 DAC seems to be superior to the X5's own DAC and the headphone amplifier has much greater power than the X5's built in amp. The coaxial output is limited to 192Khz/24 bit files. Not a problem per se. However, up to this point I have been unable to play native mode DSD's stored on the X5 through the coaxial output. They play but with a lot of white noise. I don't have a reason for this yet. The optical input is not working well. Playback has tiny drop outs. Very annoying. I probably won't use it very much and on a Mac is limited to 96Khz/24 bit. This is a Mac hardware limitation. However, another older DAC with an optical input seems fine. Have emailed the seller for assistance. Not a deal breaker, but not good either. The K5 also has analog inputs and outputs. These are just for amplification or output to an audio system. The analog inputs do not use the DAC. I don't use them as I listen through headphones 98% of the time. The headphone amplifier is excellent. It can deliver 1.5 watts into a 32 ohm load. This is more than enough to drive most headphones. I have a pair of Neumann headphones that are 150 ohms. The K5 has no difficulty driving them. Power output is extremely important especially for bass response. The lower the frequency the more excursion of the headphone driver and the more power that is needed. The difference is noticeable. The specs claim that the K5 Pro can decode native DSD files up to 768K/32 bit. I could not verify this having no DSD files of that resolution. I suspect this MAY work with the USB input only provided you have an external source that can output a native mode DSD stream. I do not have such a thing. In fact, my software currently converts DSD to PCM. This is not a problem since I don't have any hi-res DSD files. In my opinion DSD is over hyped considering that most commercial recordings start out a PCM and then are converted to DSD. This is because you can't edit or mix DSD. I have tested the K5 Pro with a variety of headphones by Neumann, Shure, Grado, Beyer and Sennheiser an been impressed with the amplifier in every case. Aside from the glitches in the optical input, I have no reservations about recommending the K5 Pro. Now the question is: Can you buy one?     • Windows Issues But Otherwise Excellent Option

I have yet to review this on my YouTube channel. However, after months of use, I can say the Fiio K5 Pro is an excellent option for those on a tight budget or who simply need a smaller amp/dac. Fiio's sound signature has changed over the years. I find some of their gear rather harsh sounding. I expected the K5 Pro to be harsh as well--to accentuate treble and/or have noticeable grain. Surprisingly, the K5 Pro is rather neutral and does NOT have harshness or grain. There are more expensive units that might provide a bit more detail and resolution (and, of course, there are MUCH more expensive alternatives that do indeed provide noticeably more detail and resolution), but for personal use, the K5 Pro is quite easy to listen to. There should be no mistaking the K5 Pro. It is not a product for professional use. As I said above, if you plan to use this in a recording studio, you might not be impressed. But those who want an affordable option for casual use, the K5 Pro does provide an uncolored sound. The build quality is also very good. Everything I can see and touch on the unit is made of metal. The volume knob doubles as the on/off switch. It turns smoothly. There is no channel imbalance at lower volumes--an achievement indeed, considering far more expensive alternatives still suffer from this. The connections are plentiful, and you can easily switch between those options by flipping a switch on the front. The K5 Pro does not need drivers for Mac OS. It is plug and play, and was immediately recognized on my Mac laptop. On Windows, however, there is some confusion. Fiio uses a unified driver for all of its USB dac devices. You can download this driver from the Fiio website for Windows. When you plug the K5 Pro into your Windows computer, Windows will try to set up the device. At first this works fine; you might even be able to connect to the K5 Pro. But if you turn the K5 Pro off after successfully using it on Windows, and then a few moments later turn it back on to use again--Windows 10 will not recognize it. I have tried different USB cables, and plugged the unit into powered and unpowered USB hubs, and different USB ports on my computer--with no change. If you turn on your Windows computer, log into Windows, and THEN turn on the K5 Pro--Windows likely will not recognize it. This issue has been documented online for Fiio's other devices, and there are one or two comments about the K5. Uninstalling and reinstalling the Fiio drivers does not solve this problem. It is entirely possible there is an issue with the USB on my particular unit...but the fact that the K5 Pro works perfectly with Mac OS leaves me to doubt this potential explanation. The only workaround I have found is that I turn on the K5 Pro and THEN turn on my Windows computer. When I log into Windows, the K5 Pro is recognized and I can connect. However, if I turn off the K5 Pro and turn it back on, Windows won't recognize it. This can be a fairly frustrating experience for those who leave their computers on but turn off amp/dacs between use. There is no indication that Fiio has any intention of fixing this problem. As I said, this might be a bug in a few particular units, and yours may not suffer from it. However, it is important to keep this in mind nonetheless. Overall, the K5 Pro is an excellent option, and the USB bug on Windows is quite odd...it may not happen to you, and even if it does, what I do might also work for you. ... show more
