Description

The boys of Kings Row bout with drama, rivalry, and romance in this original YA novel by The New York Times bestselling author Sarah Rees Brennan — inspired by the award-nominated comic series by C.S. Pacat and Johanna The Mad. Sixteen-year-old Nicholas Cox is the illegitimate son of a retired fencing champion who dreams of getting the proper training he could never afford. After earning a place on the elite Kings Row fencing team, Nicholas must prove himself to his rival, Seiji Katayma, and navigate the clashes, friendships, and relationships between his teammates on the road to state championships -- where Nicholas might finally have the chance to spar with his golden-boy half-brother. Coach Williams decides to take advantage of the boys' morale after a recent victory and assigns them a course of team building exercises to further deepen their bonds. It takes a shoplifting scandal, a couple of moonlit forest strolls, several hilariously bad dates, and a whole lot of introspection for the team to realize they are stronger together than they could ever be apart. The first installment of this enticing original YA novel series by Sarah Rees Brennan, rich with casual diversity and queer self- discovery, explores never-before-seen drama inspired by C.S. Pacat's critically acclaimed Fence comic series and boasts original cover and interior art by Johanna The Mad. Text and Illustration copyright: © 2020 BOOM! StudiosFence(TM) and © 2020 C.S. • Stand-alone Story from Fence Universe
Based on the popular and incredibly charming “Fence” comics from C.S. Pacat and Johanna the Mad, this novel takes place in the same universe with the same characters, but a completely new story separate from the comics. In this book we get a lot of Nicholas and Seiji, but the real story is between Harvard and Aiden. The coach of King’s Row fencing is concerned with her team dynamics. She wants them to bond as a team. Aiden misses practices and matches to go on numerous dates. Seiji is committed but doesn’t have social skills. Harvard works really hard taking care of everyone but himself. The team is required to write an essay about teamwork to teach them a lesson. The coach convinces Harvard to do something for himself so Harvard gets set up on a date. The galavanting Aiden is annoyed at Harvard’s new independence. In the meantime, when Nicholas is bulled by some King’s Row students in town, Seiji and Eugene team up to help him out. This book was utterly charming and delightful. It was fantastic to spend more time with these characters, especially Aiden and Harvard. This novel is perfect for middle school and older with themes of queer romance, but without the adult aspect. This is a light read that will make you feel good at the end. A well-read individual can probably track where the novel is going early on, and it’s not full of twists and surprises. But the humor, the gentle cadence, the satisfying ending all make this a fun and entertaining book to read. I love it and I can’t wait for more from “Fence. ★★★★★ • Trade Paperback • Fiction - Gay, Romance • Published by Little Brown for Young Readers on September 29, 2020. ◾︎ ... show more

  • Didn’t like
Let me start off by saying the only thing I actually enjoyed about this book was Aiden and Harvard’s fake dating set up (despite the fact that I don’t like how that ended with miscommunication and made it all really really infuriating). I’ll keep my list of dislikes brief. 1) I was reminded of AFTG more than once while reading this, but a very poor attempt at mirroring what made AFTG’s characters fun and enjoyable, even when they were driving you mad. I was neutral or simply just annoyed with these characters most time. 2) This was 0.5% about fencing. No actual fencing is done in this book which still really confuses me. This was a melodramatic MLM romance basically. 3) Absolutely not a fan of how characters were depicted. There are certain characterizations that don’t translate well from a comic to written form, in my opinion, and unfortunately, those translations were attempted and failed. Like… Aiden and Harvard are best friends but don’t… fully communicate like you think they would with how close the book keeps telling us they are. Seiji’s obliviousness was just unbearable and unbelievable and not written in the way the author intended for him to be. And if I hear “Bro” one more time… I might lose it. 4) The writing style. That’s it. I did order the 2nd book but it’s up in the air whether I can muster through more of this writing style or not. ... show more

  • Great storyline, something I've been yearning for!
Full disclosure, I am a huge fan of the "Fence Comic Series"! Love them tremendously. You have a bit of a lover's quarrel between Nicholas and Seiji, although they are just friends, but it's absolutely relatable when you have that one person in your life you're always in competition with. The dynamic between both Nicholas and Seiji is expanded a bit more in this book, which I adore, as well as the dynamic between Seiji and Jesse--and Aiden and Harvard. The only thing that kind of set me back a little was the "romantic tension" between Aiden and Harvard. Though it made sense since they have been friends for a long time, at one point, it felt forced within the book, rather than a natural connection and there was a lot of back-and-forth on their confessions for each other. Still, I enjoyed the drama that unfolded within the group as a whole. The authors were able to slowly peel the layers of Seiji and Nicholas's relationship, showing character growth within the both of them--mainly Seiji, which I loved. With that being said, I rate this book a solid 8/10! I cannot wait for the next one, already on my bucket list! ... show more

  • torturous yet satisfying
4.5 stars If you are a fan of Kings Row and its fencing team you would love reading more about where the boys are coming from and where they are heading. If you are an impatient fan of romance you may find this interlude into their fencing season a little bit like torture. The apple is dangled, and you get. a bite but it gets swiftly snatched back. I must say that at first I was very reluctant to accept how the voices of each of the boys came through. There was a bit of dissonance between what I was reading and what I remembered from the comics. But as pages went along this feeling went away and the boys started sounding more like I thought they would. Looking forward to more of the comics. ... show more

  • From fencing to teenage drama
I preordered this book months ago based on the comics. This story was written by a different author, needless to say it has a notably different tone. As the coach attemps to bring the team together she is waylaid by differences in temperament and upbringing. While the writing has plenty of humor and plenty of fun (and awkward) dialogue those who enjoy fencing and a story based on teamwork and competitiveness will definitely be disappointed. What you get instead is pages of teenage angst in the form of Aiden's and Harvard's relationship, literal chapters of their back and fourth. Add to that some truly stereotypical drama, cue the I'm selfish and self centered and treat people like garbage cause daddy had money and that's what he used to do and you got yourself a story that feels like it's been written a thousand times before. The part's that focus on Seiji and Nicolas stay fairly superficial, never delving into any significant interactions or realizations. Is it worth the read? Sure, but definitely not at the asking price. The $10 pre-order for some whinny teenagers and spotty writing was a bit much. ... show more
