  • Great for storage but to slow for use a bootable drive.
Style: USB/eSATA/FireWire Capacity: 1TB
I've only just had this delivered but I thought I would write a review to give my initial reactions to it. It was very nicely packaged, with lots of cables for connecting just about everything you might have. It came promptly which goes without saying for Amazon prime. The quick start guide was well written and easy to read. The first con I encountered was the length of the firewire cable, it's about 2 feet long just barely long enough to set the drive on top of my computer. So if I keep this drive I will have to shell out for a longer cable, don't want to leave it perched there. The second con was the really really long power cable with the large brick attached, hate those things. After that formatting and partitioning went smoothly, backed up my computer with SuperDuper and made it bootable on my MacPro running Yosemite . For Mac owners the book tells you to safely eject the drive by dragging the icon for the hard drive to the Trash. I've never had to eject any drive that way before, don't know why you couldn't just right click on the Drive in the Device Panel when you open up the Finder and eject it that way. The drive is super quiet, but the worst con for me was when I booted up my computer using this external drive and tried to navigate around my desktop and open a few apps etc. It was so slow, every click of the mouse would take 8 to 10 seconds instead of 2 or 3. This drive is to replace an old 500 GB LaCie Firewire drive that I have had for 5 or 6 years and it is making a lot of noise but when I boot up with that drive and navigate around my desktop it is almost as fast as my regular drive. ... show more

  • Very good performance as Time Machine drive - UPDATED in 2020 and 2021
Check the updates below. I've been very pleased with this external drive. Original review: I've had this drive about 4 months now. It's attached to my Mac mini with a Thunderbolt to Firewire Adapter . My drive is partitioned for my Time Machine backups (4TB) and for photo files (1TB). I've never had a problem with the drive in any way. My home office isn't dead silent, so I don't know that this drive is eerily quiet when in use, but it certainly does not seem noisy. The blue LED light is bright but not enough to bother me. If it did, I'd put a bit of black tape over it or otherwise block it from my sight. I'm very pleased with this drive, and will probably be buying another Fantom drive soon, to consolidate all my photo files. UPDATE on December 24, 2016: This drive is still performing well, after eleven months in service. UPDATE #2 on May 2, 2018: I have continued to use this as my desktop Time Machine drive, with no problems in more than two years of constant operation. I've just set up a new Mac to replace the Mac mini; I've disconnected this drive and it's sitting unused in case I need to recover any backups stored on it. After I'm sure my new Mac setup is working as I wish, I'm going to reformat this drive and use its entire 5TB for Time Machine backups on the new Mac. (I'm using a portable drive for TM on that one at the moment but it's not my permanent plan.) UPDATE #3 on May 2, 2020: I happened to review my purchase of this and another Fantom HD this morning, and I see that it's been exactly two years since I updated this review. The Fantom drive has been working well as the Time Machine backup drive for the last two years, for a total of 4+ years in constant service now. Needless to say, I'm pleased. UPDATE #4 on February 17, 2021: This drive was in service as my desktop Time Machine drive until late December 2020, when I took it out of service, and replaced it with a 6TB Fantom drive to serve as the Time Machine for my new Mac mini. There was nothing wrong with this drive, but I've accumulated a lot of photo files and decided I want a Time Machine drive with more storage capacity. Since it still works fine I'll probably find another use for this drive, perhaps as an extra backup for media files. I now own four Fantom external hard drives and have had no problems with any of them, although I realize that no hard drive lasts forever. ... show more

  • Eight Fantoms and they are all going strong
Style: USB/eSATA/FireWire Capacity: 2TB
I've purchased 8 Fantom external HDDs for home and work applications (I've also recommended them to other people). The first one I bought 7 years ago, and it is still going strong without a hitch. They work well and are very reliable. Heat dissipation is excellent, and the drive noise is minimal. These Fantoms work very well with Windows, Mac and also Linux (I have drives installed on all three types of systems). The multiple options for hookup (USB, eSATA, Firewire) is also a big plus. Overall performance and reliability (a big factor for backup) beats Maxtor, Lacie, WD, and virtually every other external I've ever used (and I've used a bunch), except for external OWC Mercury SSDs. Update: ALL of my Fantoms except for one (the oldest, a "Green" drive) are still functioning. The oldest one was purchased in 2009 and JUST failed this year - that's a really good track record for a drive that is relatively inexpensive, and in a powered-on state for 8 years. I'm still a fan of Fantoms. ... show more

  • Outstanding
Style: USB/eSATA/FireWire Capacity: 3TB
This is my sixth Fantom external hard drive and I haven’t had any of them fail yet and the oldest is 12 years old. I use them all for backups and access them frequently but to be fair, I don’t have them running constantly like some people do. I got this one to use with my MacBook Pro for my iTunes library and my photo library. It came properly formatted for the MacBook and it was plug and play. It’s very fast with the (6 foot) FireWire 800 cable that I purchased with it. It does come with 2 FireWire cables (400 & 800), a USB 3.0/3.1 cable and a eSata cable, but they’re all 3 feet long and I needed one that was a little bit longer. ... show more
