Kit has everything you need for drawing your own superhero comic. Comes with 7 different colored smudge and water proof pencils. The pencils can be used for your preliminary sketches. You also get 3 waterproof Pitt Artist pens for creating ink drawings, the second pen in the box has a flexible brush tip for filling bigger spaces. Also comes with a mechanical pen and a case with blue leads in it, pencil is excellent quality. Box also has a pencil sharpener and an eraser for erasing graphite pencils. Has a booklet included in the box that tells you how to use light and shadow, make geometric shapes, do proportions and more. The manual covers it all- you get good directions on how to sketch and create your own comic. All the included pens and pencils are of a good quality and come in a box to store them in. First of all, this set has very good materials. The pencils it comes with and the quality of the book itself show that a lot of thought went into this, and it's not intended as a throwaway gift. It really goes in depth about what to do and how to do it. That said, I originally got this for my kid when she was a little too young for it. While interested in comic books and drawing, the small print of the book and the dense descriptive text were a bit intimidating to her. As she's gotten a little older, she's still not quite ready to tackle it, though I've tested it out a bit (I stink at drawing). I think it's important that someone using this has the right interest level and patience for the material. I'd guessing 9 or 10 might be a better age to dive into this, but it would be for older kids or adults too. ... show more

    • The book is nearly useless, the tools vary in quality from fair to excellent
Style: Beginner Comic Book Illustration
This is advertised as being a complete approach to learning the drawing of comics, from initial sketches to book covers to panel layout. The book is very sparse in its information, one might call it a Quick Start only -- totally insufficient for learning comic drawing. There are many tools included that are capable for student grade work. Only the Pitt fineliner pens are excellent, of artist grade quality. The colored pencils are quite good -- soft and adequately pigmented, blending well. The mechanical pencil is 0.5 lead size, with a regular graphite lead pre-loaded, not photo blue. However, photo blue pencil leads are included. It has a quirky feed mechanism, and is made in China. I use 0.5 mechanical pencils a lot, and the lead on this one was more prone to breaking than usual. The single wood cased graphite pencil, graded HB, is Faber-Castell's low-end line, and it showed. This is not the artist quality Faber-Castell 9000 series. The graphite is scratchy and did not write smoothly or consistently. An eraser and pencil sharpener are included, and they're adequate but nothing exceptional. In summary, the word "adequate" could serve to describe the entire package. Our 9 year old son loves comics. He loves to read them, watch them, act them out; if it has to do with comics, he's all for it. As part of his education we've been encouraging him to come up with his own comic stories, but he has never had the confidence to try. He received this for Christmas and he couldn't wait to try it. He immediately grabbed a handful of printer paper (because this does not come with paper) and sits down at the table, opens the case, and starts trying to draw comics. Despite his beginning work not coming out so well, he kept on going and trying and before we knew it, his comics were starting to come to life. He thought it was such a cool kit that it gave him the confidence, from excitement, to try and fail, and then try again. This really is best to use as a gift, it makes a pretty looking set. There is it one HB drawing pencil, One mechanical pencil with refills size 0.5, there are six colored pencils one is pinkish Caucasian flesh colored and one is olive green which are a little bit different than a basic six color starter set of colored pencils. There is a metal pencil sharpener and one art eraser for graphite. There are three Pitt artist pens they are B, F, and XS. There is a staple bound instruction book which gives too- short instructions on how to draw. The booklet is thick because it is written in eight languages on every page. If you already own some of these items, I would suggest that you just purchased what other items you want or need à la carte. Also buy yourself a better book about how to draw. A great started set that is very imaginatively conceived. Our daughter is quite the artist so please forgive me for a bit of public bragging here on her behalf. She recently enrolled in her first comic-oriented class at a well known school for illustration. We ordered this set as a gift. Already a super hero worshipper, she was delighted.
