  • Amazing
This stuff is unbelievable. I added it as a top dressing to my houseplants and they are already responding. And it's winter. Great product and greater value.

  • Great for my reptiles and amphibians. Also houseplants and garden.
This is a great product to keep humidity in my amphibians enclosure and allow them substrate to burrow in. Several inches in my salamanders enclosure keeps them happy. Use it in my nesting box for my Veiled Chameleon. 2 blocks when mixed with water expand to fill a 5gallon bucket. I put my old used soiled substrate in the garden and it helps the plants retain moisture and nutrients. I started with another brand that was much more expensive and this is just are good. ... show more

  • Bugs! Quality has gone downhill.
I have used this product for years and have started having a few issues with it. First off, it's quality has gone downhill. This used to puff right up when it's soaked in water leaving a nice range of substrate textures. Now it gets wet but doesnt absorb the water. There are even chunks that stay hardened like little stones. The % portion of the strands from the coconut husk has increased in turn reducing moisture absorption and square footage coverage. As a result I am using twice as much. The quantity of the debris that I'm finding in it has increased as well and it has to be sifted through before its used. The biggest issue I'm having is the little unwanted guests that come with it! This product is supposed to be triple sterilized and is the reason have used it throughout the years. The last two shipments have been a horror show. After a few days there are tiny black winged bugs everywhere. They don't cause any harm but are obnoxious as I find them anywhere there is moisture. I set my cup of coffee down for 30 seconds and.. Ill just say, that the vocabulary in my home gets very colorful. It saddens me to say but if I have to bake it myself and use double the bricks I will just buy the better quality organic coconut fiber from the garden store. ... show more

  • Sulcata enclosure
I used this in a mix for our sulcata. It works to help keep humidity up in the enclosure since our sulcata is a baby right now. It is a little messier for water and food trays and we do have to clean out the water tray and food tray more than when I just used wood chips. He drags the dirt into his water and food trays walking around. That didn’t happen with just chips but the wood chips didn’t do a thing for humidity. All in all I am happy with the way this has worked in the enclosure. Moving forward I’m going to keep using it. I may try varying the amount of plantains soil to the amount of chips. See if I can keep the humidity and not have as much dirt in his water and food trays. Try to find a balance that works. ... show more

  • You definitely get more than it seems!
I bought this as a substrate for a new corn snake, and I ended up buying way too much because I didn't realize exactly how much this stuff will expand. I've adapted a 30 gallon tank for her, and half a block expanded enough to cover the bottom of the tank about 2 inches deep. It's amazing. My little corn snake also loves to burrow in it, and even dry it holds her tunnels' shapes fairly well. Changing to this has really made her much happier. To use it, you need to take one of the blocks, which is super compacted, and soak it in water until it breaks apart. If you need to use it fairly wet, you can soak it and add it straight to your vivarium. Otherwise, you'll need to soak it, spread it out on something, and let it dry for at least 12 hours before you use it. This stuff will hold a LOT of water, and while I used far less than the package recommended to soak it in, it still took a long time to dry back out. I suggest breaking off what you think you need, letting it soak in water that comes up the block about half way, and breaking it up as it loosens to keep it as dry as possible. Once it does start to loosen, it's pretty easy to break up the clumps and fluff it out. I spread mine out and used a box fan to keep air moving over it and turned it over every now and again until it wasn't damp anymore. Also, the packaging doesn't lie. It has a texture more like soil than the bedding I'm familiar with, so don't expect a feeling like wood shavings from this. However, that does mean that if you're using it for live plants they should do fine with it. As an experiment, I used a little to re-pot one of my succulents, an Aloe, and it's growing extremely well. Since then, I do plan to use this when I add live plants to my set up. I'm weird but I also really like how this stuff smells. It smells like super clean earth. Overall I'm extremely pleased with this product, it's definitely a steal at the price for the quantity you get. I fully plan to keep using this as my regular substrate from now on. ... show more

  • Expands, HOLDS Water, No Mold!
I bought this to use in my enclosed terrarium. I converted a 40 gal aquarium into a tropical plant paradise. I have several plants in there and planted them directly into the substrate. I am amazed at the quantity for the price. It comes in three bricks that are soaked in water to expand and break apart. I followed the instructions and was left with a large amount of planting medium with just the right moisture level. I put a layer of pea gravel, a layer of horticultural charcoal, and then this substrate on top. I then put several plants directly into the substrate and they are all flourishing! I use a squirt bottle and moisturize the substrate about once every 10 days maybe. This stuff really holds moisture well! + Price + Lightweight/Airy Planting Medium + No Problems with Mold or Fungus + Easy + Not Messy - No Cons _Bottom Line_ Yes, I would recommend this to a friend as a planting medium for a terrarium. I use some that I have leftover for rooting plant cuttings. I use this substrate as a planting medium because it holds moisture so well. I have had much better success with rooting cuttings. This product has many uses, works great, is low cost, and easy to use. Easy 5 Stars. I will be using this from now on in my terrarium. ... show more

  • Will buy again!!!
The stuff is so well packaged that I should have only bought one box instead of two. However, I will definitely be using the rest eventually. It has no odor and is the perfect vivarium soil for my snake enclosure. Price-wise it's unbeatable and the shipping was 2 days from order to delivery!
