Read more How to Clean & Maintain Your Espresso Machine? DAILY HABITS: 1. Always wipe down the steam wand after using it. You should also purge the wand before and after use. This will prevent obstructions from dry milk and the buildup of bacteria. 2. Flush the group head before each round of espressos: oils from the coffee and old grounds can add undesirable flavors to your shots. 3. Keep your cleaning clothes fresh. Replace them two to three times a day. Make sure they’re laundered at high temperatures and with detergent. Get into the habit of cleaning your machine properly at the end of each day. The routine should include the following actions: STEP 1: Regular Maintenance of Espresso Machines 1. Knock the used espresso grounds from the basket after every shot and rinse it out. 2. Wipe the basket with a dry cloth. 3. Attach the portafilter to the group and rinse with fresh water for a few seconds. STEP 2: Deep Cleaning an Espresso Machine 1. Dissolve a small amount of espresso machine cleaner in water as directed to make a cleaning solution. 2. Use a small nylon brush or a specialized group brush to scrub the basket, portafilter, and group gasket with the cleaning solution. Scrub the removable items and rinse with warm water. 3. Put the cleaning solution in the water reservoir. Run as directed, usually for several times at about 5 seconds each. 4. Then remove the blind basket and rinse thoroughly with clean water. 5. Sanitize the steam arm by flushing it with hot water and wiping it thoroughly. 6. Remove and clean the drip tray. 7. Wipe the exterior with a clean cloth or towel. STEP 3: Descaling an Espresso Machine If you don’t use distilled water and your tap water has a high mineral content, over time it can cause limescale buildup in your espresso maker. Descale your espresso machine at least once a year. 1. Dissolve a water descaler in water to make a solution. 2. Let the solution sit in the espresso maker for at least 20 minutes. 3. Turn on the espresso maker and force a half cup of descaling solution through the portafilter and a quarter cup through the steam wand. 4. Turn off the machine and let it sit for another 20 minutes. 5. Flush the rest of the solution through the machine. 6. Finally, flush clean water through the machine to rinse out the descaler. STEP 4: Reassemble and Test Your Espresso Machine
