Out of the box this thing was sharp and it cut ice like butter. It bound slightly a few times but I just kept turning and tilt the auger a bit until it dug in again then started cutting and kicking up shaved ice. Went through 10" of ice in under 30 seconds I estimate and I'm a novice. I purchased the 8" wide auger. I had a tried a 6" wide used auger before this and it would not cut no matter what I did even after shimming the blades four times which felt sharp so this was a blessing and a steal for the roughly $50 paid. I have a fish pond in MN and I have to vent it every few days so the amonia gases can escape from the decaying leaves on the bottom or all my fish could die. The blades RIP through ice. Used my 6” auger today on ice that was about 13-14” and it cut right through. The black top piece that you hold while using it keeps falling off though, and the instructions didn’t offer a solution on how to resolve that. You definitely need it because you’re gently pushing down while turning the auger. I might just have to super glue it on, because otherwise it’ll blow away or get lost on my next ice fishing trip. Bummed about that but otherwise it’s a great auger. The blade cover is a lot nicer than the one on my old auger. ... show more

Just wanted to update this review. Year 4, with a bit of sharpening I'm still thrilled with this Auger! This is an excellent hand Auger. It splits to 1/2 size for storage in the warm months and easily assembles for winter use. I can cut holes in less than a minute by hand and really don't feel the need to ever adapt this to use with a drill. It cuts easily with the included blades (which can be sharpened or replaced as needed) and has held up extremely well through last season, and now for the first cuts of this season. I do recommend this to anyone who asks, and personally prefer this over gas powered augers. These are quiet, still quite fast, lighter, and don't risk spilling chemicals into our waterways. I plan to do a lot of fishing this year through the ice, thanks to this trusty Auger. The 8" diameter is great for fishing pike through the ice as well. ... show more

This manual auger is light, strong, and does the job. Gets through 6” of ice is around 12-15 turns. Great value for the money.

The media could not be loaded. I got through 12” of ice in under a minute and I’m just a girl! Definitely recommend this but I think I’d rather have the 8” now that I see how easy it was.
