  • Good retrofit for older carbureted applications
My old lawn tractor quit running the other day. I diagnosed it as a fuel delivery issue (it would run-- barely-- on full choke or with some carb cleaner sprayed into the engine) and figured out that the diaphragm fuel pump that runs off the pressure pulses inside the engine crankcase was not delivering much fuel. This pump is built into the side of the carburetor and the parts for it come in most rebuild kits. The trouble is, I'd already rebuilt the carburetor and fuel pump. I concluded that the pressure pulses going to the pump were a bit weak, either because the engine is getting tired or the crankcase has a leak somewhere or both. Since the engine runs very well and doesn't smoke, I decided a brute force approach was the best course. I'm good at those so I was already on familiar ground. For $10 I got this pump, and for another $12 I got a 4-pack of relays with mounting pigtails. I had some ATC fuse holders, wire, crimp connectors, etc. already. I figure this repair cost me about $25 in parts plus an afternoon of my time. I wired the relay to the hot side of the battery with an inline fuse, then wired the control side to a switched power wire from the starter switch. When I was done, the pump would only run when the key was on. Perfect. I made a mounting plate out of a piece of aluminum I had kicking around, plumbed the fuel line with a new filter and shutoff valve, zip-tied all the wires out of the way, and turned the key on. The pump cycled and filled the float bowl of the carburetor. I twisted the key to the start position and the engine roared to life. I managed to finish mowing my lawn and the tractor worked fine the whole time. This pump is a good low-cost solution for fuel delivery issues on old machines. No idea what the longevity is but for $10 if it lasts a couple of years I'll be thrilled. It's a very good idea (translation: essential) to run the pump with a fused power feed and a relay or some other means of shutting it off. Running without a fuse is an accident waiting to happen if a wire shorts out somewhere so don't skip this step. You could probably run the pump on a switch but a relay with key-on power is almost as simple and there's less danger of forgetting it on and killing your battery (or worse). I'm not sure what the max pressure of this pump is, but keep in mind that the needle valves in some small engine carburetors may not withstand it. If the pump overpowers the needle, it will overflow the float bowl and flood the engine. At that point you'd have to install some sort of bypass or regulator to return excess fuel back to the tank. This didn't happen to me so I didn't investigate. Take note of the dimensions of the pump before ordering. Those mounting legs and the hose barbs stick out a surprisingly long distance. I had trouble finding a place to mount the pump until I found a small area under one of the engine's cylinder heads. This proved to be a good spot because the inlet of the pump will gravity feed, but there were a few other spots I tried where the pump absolutely would not fit. This pump is available from a lot of different sellers on Amazon. I bought the one that had the best combination of low price and good reviews. After figuring out how to get it mounted, ie where, its been running successfully now all summer on my mower, probably have over 25 hours on it and has not missed a beat. I also purchased a low pressure regulator but have not used it, it seems to deliver under 5 psi and does not over power the float and needle valve in my carb as some have suggested. ... show more

  • Incorrect Advertising??
I bought this to put on a 1962 223 cu in Ford F100. Installed and worked fine while idling the engine for about 10 minutes. Started driving around the block and the pump stopped working...did not even get 1 mile. Coasted back to the house, turned the ignition on to just let the pump run, started the truck and drove 300 ft before it stopped working again. Opened the hood and to check the pump, and it was super hot to touch. Tried to let it cool, but it would not pump anything else. Had to go back and install a higher pressure pump. ... show more

  • works on my Chinese Loader
It was recommended to install this on my Chinese Loader because the fuel pump on it is vacuum style so it takes a few engine cranks to start. This makes it faster starting. OK install seems to work.

  • Perfect solution to replace fuel pump on briggs v-twin motors
The brigs vtwin tractor/mower motors use a diaphragm pump that operates from the pressure in the valve cover from running. Problem is, as you engine gets older, valves leak, compression leaks etc, it gets weaker and weaker and the motor runs starved for fuel. I replaced the head mounted stock pump with this. the brigs machines use 1/4" fuel line and this uses 5/16 so.....Use a plastic fuel filter BEFORE the pump and hose clamps, mount the pump solid, then run the output fuel line to ANOTHER filter - use pre- and post- filters, and then into the carb. This requires very little 12v power, but you dont want this powered if the engine is not running so..... The v-twins all have a fuel bowl shutoff solenoid on the bottom of the 2bbl carb, tap into the same power source that powers this solenoid, and use it to drive a simple 12v automotive relay. For the driven side of the relay, source 12v from the battery, but use an inline blade fuse of about 10a (red) When you turn the key to on, you will hear the plunger start tick-tick-ticking and pressure will build. the vtwins need really not much more than 2psi so this is perfect. as an added safety measure since the fuel lines are on the SAME SIDE as the exhaust on the vtwin, use fuel hose only - not just any rubber hose and from the output of the fuel pump, instead of general joe hose clamps, I used high pressure clamps. you dont want this ever popping off. I was --><-- this close to buying a new tractor, then I put this on and the old girl (26 years old) has new lease on life. All my problems were fuel flow related and the vtwin 2bbl carbs are VERY susceptible to dirt in the jets. use filters. ... show more

  • Pepped up my golf cart!
My golf cart is fun to drive again! I can't hear the pump running, it's way quieter than I was expecting. At first, I thought it wasn't even working, but my cart fired right up! And it runs better than ever! No more stalling or "running out of gas" with a full tank. Best upgrade I've purchased for my cart! Btw, mine is an old (mid 90s?) Yamaha cart that had a crankcase-pressure activated fuel pump that never worked good except for a month or two after I replaced it. With this electric pump, you just need to make sure it's wired to the starter side of the solenoid. This is so it only runs when the engine is turning over and running. If you wire it to the key switch, it may flood the carb and leak when the key is on and the engine isn't running. ... show more
