They lay flat and provide heat protection for the counter top surface. They are silicone and have good traction so the hot tool stays put while waiting to be used. It also protects if you have to pack up quickly and the tool is still hit when you need to put away or in suitcase. They hold the tool inside due to the grippy nature of the silicone…even without a flap closure. My 2.5 inch flat iron fits with plenty of room. My hot brush straightener iron fits well in my second one. I love these! Tools fit! Heat protects the counter when used flat and surroundings when packed up. Easy to clean as well!!
