  • Great for small projects, but base clamp doesn't work well...
I bought this to be an extra set of hands when doing small projects like soldering, filing, gunsmithing, etc. It's pretty heavy and well made, however the clamping lever at the base that keeps the vice from swiveling around is a poor design and doesn't clamp tight enough to keep it from moving with moderate force. I'm trying to figure out how to put a rubber gasket in between the mating surfaces to aid in keeping it locked in place, but am probably going to have to make one myself. Otherwise it does come in handy and has a small anvil to boot. ... show more

  • Kinda small.
Decent vice, just on the small side. I probably didn't read the fine print.

  • An Excellent First Bench Vise!
The media could not be loaded. I was able to clamp a pieve of heated metal in these, grip the other end with some tongs, then walk around it to make a spiral handle for an old shop brush I have. It's a small vice, but a mighty one nonetheless! My one recommendation (especially for any other new/hobbyist smiths out there) is to save up for another vice that opens way from the mount, as this opens towards it. Don't get me wrong, this thing works great! Highly recommend grabbing one! You just have to be careful with clamping a long piece of material in these, since you only get about 1/4" of clearance between the outer jaw and your mounting surface. I'll probably update this review with a video later to demonstrate what I mean by "it opens towards the mount," just so other potential buyers see what I mean. Better to be informed! :) UPDATE: In the video I go over some of the features with the vise, but I may have discovered why the quick release button locks up. When you use that to push the jaws closed on something, I think it sort of lifts the teeth away from that spiral rail. So at first when you slide the jaw elsewhere, the teeth aren't in alignment with the rail. When you go to crank the jaws in either direction, the teeth will click into place and find their position again. Conversely, if you have it closed tightly onto something, those teeth have a really tight hold on the rail, which creates a lot of friction when trying to use the quick release. If you crank the jaws open a little bit before pressing the button, it relieves some of that friction and lets the teeth move more freely. All that is to say: if you clamp it tightly, it'll lock onto your material. Don't rely on the quick release to let go of something in a pinch (badum-tss), it'll be locked up until you unclamp the jaws a little bit. Hope this review is helpful! ... show more
