Great design. Does what it says it will do, but takes a few minutes practice. If you just drop a nut in and squeeze, it often crushes a nut instead of cracking it. Nuts, as you probably know, crack better along the seam, but it's not easy to align a nut along it's seam in this cracker like it is in a regular style nut cracker. For smaller nuts, like a filbert/hazelnut, it will drop straight to the bottom. For these nuts, go easy and stop at the first cracking sound, otherwise you'll crush it. Remove it, then pry or pick it apart in order to get big nut pieces. Pecans can be aligned on the seam of the levering mechanism a little easier, but it takes a bit of work. Again, go easy. Then remove the nut and put it in the other way. Same thing with pecans -- pecans being a little bigger, go much better. Walnuts even more so. Brazil nuts being in short supply, I only had 3 to practice on and didn't come up with a great way to do those yet. Anyway, is it worth $35? Not to me. To me it's probably worth $20. $35 seems a bit much given that it's not perfect. But it is MESS-FREE as advertised as long as you have a bowl handy for a discard pile. And it squeezes easy enough. I was going to buy a bunch of these as Christmas gifts, but not at $35. If neatness is a huge priority for you instead of getting a full/big nut piece, then it may be worth $35 to you. it's a graduated cylinder, so nut falls down as far as it can, then gets squeezed on one side by the lever. Depending on the size of the nut, hardness of shell and integrity of the nutmeats, that may actually work: shell cracks, funnel up-ended & cracked nut drops out (maybe hazelnuts?) but pecans just get squashed, and picking nutmeat amount shards of shell is not a lot of fun. Favorite so far is the Duke metal sliding cracker--messy as nut shell bit can fly off, but pecans at least usually emerge in beautiful whole halves. ... show more

The Drosselmeyer nutcracker is ingenious, and rather fun to use. However, it takes a little bit of practice to get the wonderfully whole nuts that it can produce. The double lever action exerts much more force than a conventional V-shape cracker, so it's significantly easier to crack things like hard brazil nuts. Unlike the V-shape cracker, the amount of movement is naturally constrained by the unit's design, so while the movement is very forceful, it's also small and controlled. Consequently, nuts are hardly ever destroyed; as they so often are with regular V-shape crackers. Using the cracker takes some concentration. This is because different kinds of nuts do better in one orientation than another. To give a sense of this, here are some examples. Hazel nuts are the simplest, because they need no special orientation and so come out perfect virtually every time. It's also pretty easy to get a perfect almond every time, although large almonds are the easiest if they orientated so the inner lever presses on the seam. This means holding the almond between thumb and forefinger, and holding it in place and squeezing until it's firmly held by the inner lever. Regular V-shaped crackers are particularly destructive of pecans, because of the pecans' relatively thin shells. Although not obvious to see, pecans actually do have a seam. (It's easiest to see if you look at the pointy end of the nut.) Unlike cracking an almond, a pecan is turned a quarter of a turn so that the seam is across the unit and not against the inner lever. With Brazil nuts, you want the short flat side of the nut against the lever, and after the first gentle squeeze has made some progress, be prepared to pop out the Brazil nut and turn it the other way around, and squeeze again. There's a brief YouTube video that shows a little of the technique, and how to disassemble the unit for cleaning. The unit has been criticized for losing it's paint finish on the inside, but it's hardly noticeable. In fact, the unit actually grips nuts a bit better without the paint. (Drosselmeyer might want to think about whether there needs to be paint on the inside at all?) It's worth remembering that quite a lot of the success rate will depend upon the nuts themselves. Some will have kernels that are stuck to their shells, and are difficult. Others will be a looser fit, and are easy. It's recommended to keep nuts in the freezer so that they are easier to crack (and stay fresher). Nuts don't last that long around here ... but it sounds like a good tip! ... show more

It works! I have arthritis in my hands and just bought 18 pounds of hazelnuts in the shell. I'm not sure what I was thinking but clearly it wasn't how I was going to shell them. I tried a traditional nutcracker, to no avail. And I used a pair of locking pliers with moderate success, but it wasn't easy. Resorted to reading lots of reviews and this on wasn't made in China so I tried it. AND IT WORKS! I can shell several very quickly. Even my 8 year old can use it. Occasionally, I will get a nut in there which won't crack, but I loosen my grip, give it a little shake to reposition the nut and then it opens. Hazelnuts are so good. Highly recommend! ***UPDATE*** I have noticed an increase in arthritis pain in my thumb after using this nutcracker. However, I turned it around so I am squeezing with my fingers instead of my thumb, and that seems to have helped. ... show more

I really like this nutcracker. It's much easier than the old school nutcracker I had before. There is less mess and I find that even tough to open Brazil nuts are a lot easier with this. It's very solid and has held up well now for over a year. If I ever need to replace it, I would definitely buy it again. Downsides are that it's easier to just smash the nut by breaking it too hard. And it's tough for someone with little hand strength, but I suppose most nutcrackers are. ... show more
