How to make sure the gas lift cylinder fits your office chair? Check the outer and inner diameter of your broken gas lift cylinder. This replacement part fits the one with an outer diameter of 2" and inner diameter of 1.1". How to install the gas lift cylinder on your own? 1. Tip the chair onto its side. 2. Use the rubber mallet to tap and remove the base of the chair away from the seat. 3. Use the pipe wrench to clamp tightly onto the top of the cylinder. Twist and then pull up in order to remove the cylinder. 4. Remove the orange cap of the new cylinder. Insert the bottom of the cylinder into the center of the chair base. 5. Carefully lift both the chair base and the chair cylinder into the chair mechanism. The parts will then fasten on their own. This is a good cylinder and I love the height it adds. I viewed the installation instructions and watched some videos, but I did not have an easy time installing it because my chair was old, grimey and dusty. (The label on bottom said 2003) Tips if your chair is old like mine. 1. To get the existing cylinder out of the chair, you may need to whack it HARD. I used a 5lb sledge and a block of 2x4. Even then, it took SEVERAL hard whacks, putting all sorts of dents in the wood block. 2. Use an adjustable pipe wrench to unscrew the cylinder. The teeth on mine were leaving marks on old cylinder and it wouldn't budge. I eventually applied WD-40 at the top and that loosened it up enough to come off. There was a bunch of rust inside. 3. Once you install the new cylinder, you will have to pop off the plastic cover under the chair and adjust the set screw so it doesn't sag. After I did this, it worked perfectly. ... show more

Take a look at this product, it is well worth the purchase. For a taller chair seat, this does the job. It was a better and more sturdy lift-tube than my old one. It put my feet, knees and hips in a more neutral position for better comfort. Less cramped = more Comfort. A word though: it is an easy install once the old one is removed.     • It managed 2 brutal years of use
I work from home and also tend to hibernate in my office in my spare time. This thing got 12+ hours of use on average, nearly daily for the last 26 months. Overall, it was great, but there was a minor drawback when it started making some squeaking sounds for several months after about 6 months of use. Luckily that did stop with time, but now the unit automatically raises itself every time you stand up. Luckily, it still holds the height correctly, but it requires you to lower the seat every time you sit down. I used it at about 75% of it's max height for the entire life of the unit. I probably won't buy it again due to the potential squeaking sound, but generally speaking, this thing held up well to the daily use and abuse. ... show more

I think this is my 5th or 6th gas strut from different suppliers and 3rd from same supplier. All havent lasted more than a month. last couple have been dead on arrival. Why is it so hard to make a reliable gas strut ? I feel these companies are a scam at best.

    • Saved My Chair and Spine - Great Extra Height for My Chair
The media could not be loaded. I'm very pleased with the quality and functionality of this unit. I was lucky enough to snag an adjustable sit-stand desk early in the pandemic from a local seller, but none of the chairs in my apartment were tall enough to use with it, even at the lowest setting for the desk and the highest setting for the chair. This drop-in replacement immediately raised the minimum height of my chair, and the fully-extended height is now almost comically tall -- see the attached video. It took me about two minutes to remove the old cylinder from my desk chair and then this one just pushes right into place. If you have a pipe wrench, large set of slip-joint pliers, or similar around the house, they will be a big help getting your old cylinder out of a chair, especially if you've have it for a while. I'm really glad I went this route rather than buying large-diameter wheels which - while nice - would have made a smaller impact on the overall height and adjustability of the chair.
