I've owned several Doss speakers now and I always seem to come to the same conclusion...they sound good, but not great. However...they are quite a bit cheaper than the competition so you're getting more value for your money with a Doss. As for this specific speaker, there are some things that I like about it. It has a genuine Left and Right channel (verified via left/right test file) and so it is a legit stereo speaker. It has a 3.5mm aux-in so that you can hook other devices to it (CD player, turntable with preamp, FM radio, etc). I love the built-in handle, rubber feet and also the fact that it comes with a strap so you can carry on your shoulder or hang from something. It's stable when sitting on the ground unlike other "rounder" bluetooth speakers that can roll if not perfectly level and/or touched. The build quality is very decent and should survive being tossed about in the trunk or your pool bag. It is a bit lighter than I thought it would be though which makes me wonder what the actual difference is between this and a JBL of the same size as the JBL is significantly heavier. Things I'm "meh" on: The "Bass" button is nice, but honestly that's what the default sound signature should have been. Without it engaged, it sounds a bit thin. I'd have liked to see the Bass button act as a pseudo loudness button where it increases bass at lower volumes. It also has LED lights with three settings 1) slowly cycle through a rainbow of colors, 2) randomly try to keep up with the beat while cycling rainbow colors and 3) off. No choices for a fixed color, so I ran the LED lights off. One thing I really dislike is random LED lights for the sake of LED lights, but at least here you can turn them off. It played a 50Hz test-tone with decent authority (which is really good for a speaker of this size), but when playing a song with a 50Hz kick drum or something the bass/drum faded more to the back and seemed to get lost in the song. The sound overall is good. It's stereo but doesn't have any kind of DSP working to give you a more stereophonic image (from what I can tell). The bass is ok but at lower volumes it may be a bit thin (not everyone wants to listen at party levels). The speaker overall sounds nice, but there's just something missing from it that more expensive speakers have. I think it's a fullness and "power" to the sound that many not quite be there that's in other brands that are more expensive. Overall though, for about $100 (or sometimes less) this speaker is a solid choice. While it is not a Sony or JBL, it also does not carry that type of price tag. If I'm putting it around water or sand or using it for construction work entertainment I'm buying a speaker like this as I wouldn't feel nearly as bad about getting it wet, dirty or paint all over it. I have owned dozens of portable bluetooth speakers over the years and never been exceedingly happy with any of them. My Sonos Roam has really good sound quality but so-so battery life and the charger stand it came with broke just after the warranty period. My old school Apple HiFi (kudos if you know about these) has world-class sound quality and volume but weighs a metric ton and could barely be considered truly portable (it takes 4 D batteries that last about an hour at 3/4 volume). My Oontz Angle 3 Ultra has good battery life and durability, but with meh sound quality and volume that leaves a lot to be desired. All of them have their own pros and cons. Enter the the DOSS Extreme Boom. The first thing I noticed about this item was how long it took to initially charge to full battery, which concerned me that it the electronics might only accept very low current charging (which I've seen with other devices). Turns out, it just has a really big battery inside that allows it to play above 50% volume for many many hours on a single charge (best guess is I'm getting 15-20 hours of playtime per charge). The sound quality this speaker produces is not audiophile-level by any means, but I would call it above average when considering a variety of music styles. It does get quite loud if you want it to, but you'll start to get a bit of bass distortion depending on the type of music you're listening to. For folk music, this speaker does a great job and you get a lot of detail in the stringed instruments. For more melodic EDM, this speaker does well. For the more bassy end of EDM, it does start to distort from the lower bass notes (which can be slightly improved by turning off the bass boost). This speaker has been my companion in the backyard as I've been building a treehouse and it has proven to be quite durable and resistant to a variety of conditions. It has gotten hit by the sprinklers on more than one occasion, it has gotten covered in falling pine needles and debris, and it has repeatedly been blanketed in saw dust. None of these conditions seem to have affected it in the least. The bluetooth connectivity has been stellar in my experience. Connecting to this speaker is very fast and consistent. Even when you've gone out of bluetooth range for a few minutes and then return, the speaker often reconnects itself to my phone. The range seems to be quite good if you're in line of sight (probably somewhere around 100ft), and quite a bit lower if you've got walls or windows between you and the speaker. The form factor of this speaker has proven to be surprisingly great. The fixed handle is great and make transporting it easy. The buttons are big and have good tactile feedback to let you know you've pressed them. Despite packing tons of features into it, this speaker doesn't feel heavy by any means and seems to have good balance that keeps it upright even when on uneven surfaces (like stacks of lumber). Overall, this speaker has far exceeded my expectations and I would call it the best overall bluetooth speaker I have owned. What it lacks in sound quality, it more than makes up for in volume, battery life, portability, durability and overall value (at $75 right now).
