  • Great Leather Tool Kit
Size: Upgraded model
Bought for my husband because he wanted to start leatherworking as a hobby. The only downside was the lack of a case. I could have bought a different one with a case, but these items seemed to be of better quality. We found a carry box at Harbor Freight that fit everything perfectly.

  • Beginner in leathercraft
So I'm a beginner in leather crafting and just decided to get this kit for simplicity's sake, since it was a lot of items for not that shabby of a price. Overall I like the kit. Right now I'm working on my third leather piece since getting this kit. I have two complaints so far, which are not a big deal but pretty annoying when you really think about them: 1. the booklet it comes with was one of the things that drew me in, but it's actually mostly useless. Three pages are devoted to describing every single tool in every single other leathercrafting kit they sell, in addition to the page on this kit. Marketing ploy? Maybe. Page 5 and 6 give extraordinarily vague and totally useless "steps" to make a leather wallet and finish a product. Literally all it does is give you some vague idea of how to use the tool to do a thing. You could learn 10,000x as much if you just watch one youtube crafting video or read one online article about leather crafting tools. The next few pages have slightly more words and are slightly more helpful (still just describing the tools), but loads of the photos depict items not included in this kit, or versions that are often different and superior to what's in the kit. The only page I found really useful for how to actually DO something is the 14th and final page, which explains the extremely confusing caps, sockets, studs, and posts - partly because all the youtube videos I've watched on how to install these are kind of unclear or use different ones. So I don't like that the booklet is called "Leather Crafting Book: Step-by-Step Techniques for Beginners." They should rename it something more like "Leather Crafting Tool/Kit Guide." Because I thought it was going to actually teach me how to complete a few little projects, which I think is the impression they're going for with the current title and cover photo. And the booklet is only offered in some of their kits, which is silly. Imagine if a company said "we're only going to provide instructions if you buy the upgraded version." It's like that, imo. 2. I just ruined my third piece trying to figure out how to do leather stitching with something - ANYTHING - in this kit. It came with a stitching groover. However, I just came to find out this tool requires a kind of tiny blade to be attached to it. The kit did not come with such a blade. So now I'll have to purchase that separately, apparently, and I've also wasted more than an hour worth of work screwing up this piece. I just think it's stupid to provide a stitching groover with no blade, in a kit with a million other things large and small... why couldn't you include that tiny, tiny blade? SMH. Overall, this kit was probably a decent deal for a near-total beginner. I'd give it 5 stars if it didn't have these two issues, especially the second one. Edit: Upon further study, I think the "blade" I'm hearing about is maybe not really a blade per se, but rather just a teeny tiny edge of a hole that requires ultra precise positioning to use. So maybe it did come with the so-called blade, but the device is hella confusing imo. I recommend they add actual instructions on how to use the blade, because it is completely incomprehensible for beginners. I mean, I *did* notice this hole had a sharp edge and attempted to use is as the groover at first, only it didn't work at all. I also read somewhere that this is the most basic and worst quality of groovers, so I might just buy a whole new groover which is at least like $9 on Amazon. Do you really want the worst quality tool for something that requires perfection to even use? ... show more

  • Solid Intro to Leatherworking kit, but not for advanced/professionals
Update: After about a month of use I've lowered the rating to three stars, as the tools haven't held up well. The mallet has started to warp, the stamps don't have deep impressions and the stitch hole punches aren't straight. Still an okay gift for a beginner, but not quite right for a hobbyist or professional. I was looking to purchase a kit to hold me over until I can have my usual tools shipped to me, and decided on this one because of the variety of tools as well as the inclusion of a few items I didn't have or haven't used. I work with leather often, and while I don't think I would suggest this kit for someone who is a seasoned hobbyist or professional, it's a good value for a beginner and includes most of what you need to get a solid grounding in leatherwork basics. It's more extensive than a basic Tandy Kit, and after checking on the prices it was cheaper for me to get this than to seek out the individual tools. The tools themselves aren't excellent but for the value are as expected, leaning towards solid. This would be a really great gift for someone getting into leatherwork for the first time, and could be a good chance to try out techniques to see what tools you'd like to invest in later on. PROS: The biggest pro is by far the variety included. There are tools to complete almost any project with detailing, including stamping/tooling, beveling, stitching and daubers for dyeing. The kit came quickly and was packed well. Everything looked to be in good condition, with the exception of the hole-punch, which was a bit discolored but seems to work well regardless. The four stitch-punches were in a ziploc bag that still had some oil in it, which came off with a paper towel and seemed to prevent any rust. The ruler and measuring tape are accurate, the thread is strong and evenly coated, and the variety of rivet/snap colors is nice. The needle 'guide' card is very useful. The stamps are decent, and left strong indentations (see photo). There were no duplicates, and they seem about the quality of the basic Tandy stamps with a good blend of images and beveler/textures. The edge beveler is very sharp and glides smoothly. There are several tools I think I'll be using often, especially the stitch-groover, swivel knife and rivet setter. CONS: The mallet is offset just enough on one side to be noticeable, and indentations were left/chips fell off on the black side after the first use. The scissors aren't leather shears, and I'll be putting them in my art supplies instead of keeping them in this kit. The prong-stitching punch bent inwards after using it a few times, I bent it back with some pliers I had on hand. The carpet needle shattered on first use, and the others appear to be of similar quality. Reluctant to use much force on the awls, but they're likely fine for thinner leather. I will likely be replacing the following tools, and don't recommend purchasing the kit if these are the things you're looking to use often: Mallet, scissors, prong-punches, sewing needles, leather thimbles, and the rivets/snaps. Overall I'm pleased I bought this kit, and am alright with replacing some of the lower-quality items as they're easy to find. Worth the purchase to have the variety of specialty tools on hand. ... show more
